Basic supporting tip: play like you have to farm

I see this SO often:

"I am a support main. I'm in bronze because my ADCs are stupid, look at my KDA I never die and I ward all over the place!"

Then I go "here let's play a game I'll see if I can at least help you get up to gold, I know I'm not great but bring in bronze must suck" and then we get into lane and they're off in the bush, sitting, waiting to fire a max range Nami bubble or hook, and their carry misses farm because they take harass if they try to go up and get it. And on top of that, I get to be all over their carry so they get killed left and right and post game they go

"See what I have to deal with?"

So guys. Here's the deal. As a support, you want to play like you're an ADC. Pretend to CS. Move up within range of the minions, poke the enemy duo if it's safe, back off a little, poke a little more... If you see an opportunity to use the bush to get even CLOSER, do it, but don't feel tied to that bush. They know you're there. You're not being sneaky. A Silver+ Duo isn't gonna magically forget you're there and move out of position, the best windows of opportunity you're going to get are micro-windows. When the carry moves up to CS. When the enemy support backs off to ward, and they're out of each other's auto range for just a second. When the wave shifts and there's a gap for your skillshots. They are tiny, tiny openings and you need to be close to take advantage.

So if you're stuck in bronze as support, ask yourself "how frequently do I threaten the enemy carry? How frequently do I make sure my carry feels safe to farm? How often am I right there on point when a little opportunity presents itself?"

People main support in Bronze?!

I'm glad you wrote this. I'd agree, the only thing I didn't see (I skimmed) was that if the enemies go in on the support, your ADC needs to fire on the enemies. All to often, I don't get the support from my ADC when the enemy engages.

If they have no reason to fear the dive, then they're going to dive.

I'm a support main, and I agree with almost everything you say. BUT... What you say is true only for ranged/poker supports. My main champion is Leona and I can't hit anyone without being dealt three times more damage. Leona is a great hard-engage/CC-nuke champion but her harass capacities are inexistent. Secondly, the bush: being in the bush is obvious, but what you are doing in there is unknown. Even though someone knows you're hiding in it, you are STILL hiding! Plus, being in the bush gives the control of the bush, and as long as you have the control of the bush, you have anti-push power. A rarely get out of the bush, except for targon's execution and when the enemy botlane has a lot of colliding skillshots I can tank. What I mean is that being Support can mean many different things in term of gameplay, and you're generalizing the Support role with lane-poking, which is not true.

Yea, most people in bronze and such don't realize that unlike mid, jungle or ADC, being a good support is not a checklist type thing. So much of being a decent support is about complementing the ADC's playstyle in a beneficial way, that there is a huge variety in whats demanded of you from game to game.

Good post.

As a support, you want to be a THREAT. You want to prevent the enemy ADC from farming. You're not going to do that sitting in a bush. You want to position and poke. If at 20 minutes neither ADC has any kills but your ADC has 170 CS and theirs only has 80 then you have done your job.

I still refuse to support for any Kalista. I hate losing control of my champion and having someone else move my champion.

Pfft .. I threaten the enemy carry as often as possible. You really want to make the enemy bot lane feel pressured. it makes them harder to decide when to go in or not because you're not making it safe for them. Having a good harass as support is so important in bot lane. Can't stress it enough.

So I agree with the OP entirely as a support main myself I couldn't agree more.

By sitting in the bush waiting for a max range skillshot, aren't you zoning the enemy carry and thus denying CS?

i love played support in bronze cuz everyone is retarded.... if i just play morg blitz or thresh i hit every cc and most of the time my adc knows how to at least autoattack and i trash lane... its a shame how bad they are down here

Yawnli11/27/2014, 11:00:22 PM1 votes

If you poke the enemy champions, minions will start attacking you and this will end up in you making your minions push, not making it possible for your jungler to gank. Check

I think alot of times when I'm supporting I worry about getting to deep, taking damage and being a burden to my carry instead of a boon. This is a great tip though and I will try to apply it. Sometimes I worry I over poke, especially on braum.

The interesting thing is that IS how you farm. You get +3 gold for AAing the enemy champs, MORE if you actually bothered to buy spellthiefs. Makes no sense when a support just sits in the bush.

As soon as I figure out why my ping spikes no matter where I am playing or what I'm playing on(looking your way riot) add me so we can duo! I love supping a good adc, or at least one that doesnt try to all in every time i poke. Seriously its hilarious in silver how adc's are willing to miss 3-4 cs in a wave to get 1 aa off on the enemy supp.

being passive against tank supports (leona/braum/ali) at lvl 1 garentees a lost lane. Cause at lvl 2 they love all ins. Best thing to do is harrass like crazy and back off specially if you have nami and W (which should be your first leveled spell) or Sona.

Edit: Also I agree with your post. Alot of supporting is trying to harrass while not taking any. More often then not when an adc or support go for cs or harrass themselves.
