It's incompetence and ignorance. People not knowing what to do or when to do it and then refuse to learn from the same mistake to the point where joining them in a 5v5 is even more pointless than pushing alone.

Personally, I find it more effective if we don't have a good sieging comp to have at least one guy use that Baron buff to shove down another lane. If we can end the game immediately, then great! If we can't, well the buff isn't amplified for every person by the minions, and if someone can get an extra tower and maybe even meet back up with the team to get another inhibitor...
Not saying you're wrong, but sometimes it's not a terrible idea to split push even when you have the advantage. It really depends.

I was with Heimerdinger pushing top lane and my adc was mirroring me on the bot lane. I clearly counted 4 opponents in front of our 3 teamates in mid lane. We were all about at the outer towers (all took down already).
Vayne got attacked and actualy had a kill. I figured that obviously if both of us keep pushing, 1 of the 2 towers would fall and the death would worth. So I kept pushing and vayne did the same on her side.
Well... I got attacked and killed by 3 champions and vayne got killed by their mid laner on bot lane.
The 3 bozos in mid ? Well... they fled back. From the terrifying 0 opponents left mid. They didnt warded, they didnt kept vision of anyone, they didn't farmed any camps... nada... they just backed and "Wait for regroup". Needless to say I lost that one lol...

And here, ladies and gentlemen, is an excellent example of how not to splitpush(And also why people tend to dislike splitpushers). Clearly you didn't see the 3 people coming for you, nor did Vayne see the danger incoming. So basically you two were split-pushing with no vision. And you expect what? The 3 people you had mid, as far as they could tell, still had 4 people waiting for them in the FoW.
Split-pushing should be done with vision. If you get caught and killed out of FoW, don't complain that your team didn't do anything, they didn't have the info needed to know that they had a numbers advantage, and now they KNOW they are at a numbers disadvantage, and if they push out now, the enemy team can collapse on them 4V3.
