Ranked Plan

I wanted to get people's thoughts on my "plan" for prep to start my first ranked games. First I wanted to get to at least decent on 3 champs per lane. For Top I have Wukong, Cho-gath (needs work) and Kayle (needs work) but am also trying out any free to play top laners to see if there are any I like to replace the "needs work" bunch, For Jungle so far I have Master Yi, Udyr (dont really like/ needs work) and Warwick (same) Intending to get Kindred (I started out jungle and then my second roll was Marksman so I think they may fit my play style, but not buying them till I get a feel for them and whether or not I actually like them so they need to be F2P first), Mid I have Yi, Ahri and Urgot (needs work) possibly Ezreal, bottom damage I have Trist, Morde and Corki (needs work) possible Ezreal/Urgot, and bot support I have Braum and Fiddlesticks (I have found fiddle works better for me as support then anything else right now, he has good poke it bot lane, a peel with his fear and at level 6 has strong roams) intending to get Alistar as well. Then I dont intend to jump in Ranked unless I have already won 1 game that day in normals (feel good then play ranked while feeling good) and have enough time to play the whole game with 0 interuptions obviously. So far in Normals I have been matched against mostly silver opponents and allies as such every time I go a step up the ladder I was thinking of spending 1 week doing just normals to get a feel for the new "MMR" find my opponents/allies strengths and weaknesses (tactically speaking) and abuse them when I re-enter ranked, I dont have any high hopes just want to see what the rewards are and maybe see if I can earn some cool rewards. I do not believe I will be ready till season 6 unfortunately though (hoping to have at least 5 junglers since I intend to main jungle, currently trying out Gragas... so far he is fun need some more test games before I decide though I am in no hurry after all I see the IP I gain to unlock champions and set up runes as time to practice before entering ranked)

I like your idea of getting better at all roles - you'd be surprised at how seldom people do this.

I would give you the following feedback:

  • Work on tanky initiator junglers like Amumu, Sejuani, Malphite, and Maokai. I know people like to carry, but these champions provide tankiness and good initiation and good AoE.

  • For ADC, I'd say getting better with hypercarries would be optimal - Tristana, Jinx, Vayne, etc. And you should learn Ashe if your team lacks initiation.

  • For support, I'd say you have a good list there, but you should learn a couple of AP supports as well, in case your team needs more utility or extra damage. Damage supports like Annie and Zyra also have good initiation. Utility supports like Janna, Morgana, and Nami have great protection for your carries and can provide picks as well.

  • For mid, I like you working on Ahri and Urgot - they are both good picks. You should also work on control mages like Orianna, Lux and Lulu. Their utility and damage are oft underestimated.

  • For top, your current lineup is pretty good, but you should also learn how to play tanky initiators up top just in case your team needs it.

Basically, you should be good with any role your team needs in any pick order you happen to land in. Have tanky initiation from your top and jungler? Run a damage or utility support, depending on how much peel your team has. Just be able to round out your team comp - picking Yi or Udyr won't work with every team comp, but rather sometimes. They should be seen as niche picks, not main picks, IMO.

Sounds good overall.

Tip: Alistar can be gotten for free via facebook/twitter/youtube (don't remember which one).

I'd recommend you at least get the following rune pages (all pages should be full of tier 3 runes): ADC: AD Marks, Armor Seals, MR per lvl / MR Glyphs, AS Quints APC(mid): Magic Pen Marks, Health/Armor Seals, MR / AP / CDR per level Glyphs, AP/MS Quints Tank: Armor Marks, Health/Armor Seals, MR per lvl / MR Glyphs, Armor Quints

Additional that would be nice: Top/Jungle AD: Armor Pen Marks, Armor Seals, MR per lvl / MR / CDR per level glyphs, AD / AS / Armor / MS quints Support: Hybrid Pen / Armor marks, Gold per 10 / Armor / Health seals, MR / CDR per level / Mana Regen glyphs, Armor / MS / AP quints

Note in each list, if more than one type is listed on the same item the one that comes earlier is preferred in my opinion (i.e. for AP Mid, you'd prefer Health Seals over Armor Seals [if it's your only mid lane page, however you'd be even better off having an AP vs AD and an AP vs AP page, and throwing armor on the vs AD page instead]).

These are just optional set-ups (feel free to view my profile and see the 6 rune pages I have, I'm going to bring that up to 8 or 10 probably on the next 2 for 1 rune page sale and fill out some more set-ups).

Otherwise, you'll probably learn a lot more in ranked so no reason to worry too much about starting. 3 champs in each role is definitely enough. If Riot does move ranked to teambuilder (which they've said they want to) you'll probably want to focus on 2 roles and have 5 champions in each though. So keep that in mind. I think a good strategy would be to do this: 2 main roles, 4+ champions in each 1 medium role, 3 champions 2 weaker roles, 2 champions in each

Especially if your mains are jungle and ADC, since Mid and Top are the most popular, you can get away with this more easily.

Don't feel like you have to win a normal to go to ranked that day. As long as you play well in the normal and don't get emotional about losing it (I'd rather lose my normal than my ranked) you should be okay. I seem to go on luck-streaks shared among normal and ranked. So if I'm getting a few bad teams in a row in normals then head to ranked, I seem to get a good team and pull out a win :)

Other general tips: Learn to CS well, if you're laning start to aim for 60cs per 10min and work that up to 80 per 10min.

Learn to ward well. You should be upgrading your yellow trinket for 250g at some point after level 9 if you're not already. Place wards in bushes. If you're laning put it in the river (farther up gives you more time to react). Once laning is done, if you're behind keep your own jungle warded (so the enemy can't get picks in your jungle as you defend). If you're ahead keep the enemy jungle warded (so you don't get picked while trying to take objectives, and perhaps can catch the enemy too). Always keep dragon and baron warded. You can only have 1 pink, but there are several key spots to have pink wards throughout the game (bushes behind red buffs, river bushes, bush at blue buffs, bushes in blue-buff jungle nearest mid lane+river (specifically red side's, lots of fights seem to happen there).

Read every patch that comes out. Know who's OP, who got nerfed, etc... and understand why. Know who to ban basically if you're first pick.

Learn which of your champions are safe first picks (i.e. they don't have many counters and can be played in to most matchups). Know which champions you can't first pick (don't first pick Nasus for example). Make your picks accordingly.

Otherwise, just have a positive attitude and don't let other players get on your nerves. Mute people if necessary. Be nice, do your best, and have fun!
