Why are there teams instead of just everyone for themselves?

I played about 15 games before I even realized I was on a team. I got second place and they gave me a victory which was confusing. I am not sure why there are teams in this mode. I feel like I get nothing of my team winning but I really want to win myself so there is no incentive for me to do anything to help my team in any way, nor am I really rewarded for them doing well.

Assuming by "team" you mean "party."

You are not in teams on TFT. You may simply invite players to join a lobby with you and duke it out. Kind of like Mario party, yeah you are there with friends, but your job is to beat everyone not just the bots.

So the answer is no. You should not be trying to help anyone in your party. You can give advice, but not taking champions or items from them will only screw you over too.
