Ranked TFT needs more than 5 placement matches.
This thread is not meant to complain about how the game of TFT works. This thread is simply taking it as it is, without asking for changes. Lets leave that to other threads.
The purpose of this thread is to point out that with TFT working the way it does, 5 matches is far from enough to place someone in a ranked system.
The basic notion you'll hear from some people regarding rank is that over time people will move closer to the rank that actually corresponds to their skill level. Even with the rng, the fact that everyone is subject to the rng means that sooner or later it balances out and skill determines your rank.
The issue here, is that with how much rng exists in TFT, that happens later, not sooner. Much later, I expect. As such, 5 matches simply isn't enough for placements, because it's not enough time for the rng to balance out and let skill be the determining factor.
With only 5 matches, a player could easily go through all of their placement matches -getting minimal items -having orgin/class traits with % chances excessively fail to proc (imagine having full yordle and not dodging a single attack, full glacial and not freezing a single enemy, or full pirate and the chests only give the 0 gold fish skeletons) -having the store fail to present them with an opportunity to make a build or level up champs
Given time, a player with Challenger skill level will rise to challenger, but if they just to happen to have terrible luck in their 5 placement matches, they could start in iron. Alternatively, a player who only has an iron understanding might find them-self getting an item from every individual minion, and coasting to victory (be it first or just top 4) and be placed high, only to suffer the anguish of falling all the way down over time.
Bare minimum I'd say TFT needs to have at least 10 placement matches, but honestly if it was my decision I'd go for even more than that.
