How do you get items? Luck and RNG.

How do you avoid getting a unit you don't want from carousel? Just don't walk near it, simple! Once your little legend comes to contact with a unit in the carousel, that means you chose that unit and the game won't allow you to detache it or change your mind. Think carefully and walk carefully. In other words, use common sense.

Like I said, it's random in PvE rounds. You can either get items or gold from the " ? " boxes that drop from the monsters. As for the carousel, it's self explanatory, tbh.

If you wanna get the item(s) from a unit, you need to sell the said unit. This will allow the items to go back to the side and you can use them again on other units.

If you're new to the game, you need to know one important thing about items: Once you combine 2 items, into a completed item, you can't get back the initial items. for example:

item 1043 + item 3070 = item 3087. But you can't disassemble item 3087 and get back the item 1043 and the item 3070 by any means. Once you complete an item, by combining 2 items, you're committed to using it the whole game. So think carefully when to combine items and on which unit you wanna use them on. And remember:

Although you can't get back the initial components of a completed item, you can still relocate the item onto a new unit by selling the current unit that holds the item and free the items from it. Of course, once you sell a unit, it's gone from your board and it returns to the shared shop pool, with its combined number of units that formed it (ex: a 3 star Lucian, when sold, means 9 one star Lucians go back to the shared shop pool).

Just don't run into someone you don't want. Run around the circle to get what you want.

Sacrifice your children to the rng gods.. That's the only way.
