I gain 1 LP for 4th place in TFT....
For real though? I'm gold 4, and usually matched with other Goldies.
Yet I gain 1 LP consistent for 4th place, but god save my soul when i'm 6th because I'll lose 25+ LP

Yeah, that's how the ranking system works in TFT currently:
- finish 1-3, you win;
- 4th place, you stay where you are;
- finish 5-7, you lose;
- 8th place, you lose everything and probably get demoted.
The dev post said there will be some changes in Set 3 though. Something better, hopefully.
If the matchmaking finds some opponents in lower division than you the you will lose more LP or win fewer LP. The same thing occurs in high division: the higher division is the fewer LP you gain for a win.
