@Riot what separates a 975 skin from a 1350?

So in the past the difference was 1350 had new voice effects. Now 1350 skins dont have voice effects, so nothing separates the skin class. Am I right concluding that the 975 skin price is being retired and replaced with 1350?

We don't have plans to stop creating 975 RP skins and move forward with only 1350 RP skins.

You're correct that one of the most noticeable differences between the two tiers is the voice processing - as seen most recently on Demon Vi. However, there are many skins that are 1350 RP and don't have voice processing.

We have a Guide to Skin Tiers, which better outlines what each tier has/sometimes has.

What kind of voice filter would you give Cosmic Reaver Kass? Give him a garbled outer spacey voice when he already has one?

Hey KateyKhaos, I think some of the discontentment that people are vocalizing regarding skin pricing is due to the "Sometimes include" point of the guide. It is extremely strange that new model, new texture, new splash image, new animations, new visual effects, new sounds are all shared between 975 and 1350 skins. Simply put, there is no clear metric that actually dictates skin pricing and that Riot arbitrarily decides in which tier a skin will fit.

Sorry to say but the Guide to Skin Tiers needs to be reworked.

They do share potential similarities, however, in the 975 RP tier, we're usually looking at new particles/sound effects where needed, and a recall animation.

A good example of this would be with Arclight Vayne (975 RP) where only necessary particles/sounds were changed, as compared to Arcade Sona (1350 RP) where we changed all particles, and gave her all new sound effects. Some skins only need new particles, whereas others need sounds, too, because we've completely changed the weapon.

The rules aren't hard and fast - we price each skin on a case by case basis - which is why there is the 'sometimes' category.

So putting a filter on the voice is what budges the quality bar up like 4 dollars? I dunno man, when I see a 1350 skin I feel like I'm not getting my money's worth for how similar 975 and 1350 skins are, but maybe that's just me. It's one of the reasons I've refused to buy Akali's 1350 skin.

To clarify, it's not a filter - the lines are individually processed. We do this for instances where we feel that an altered voice (such as Demon Vi) makes sense and enhances the thematic.

As a friendly reminder, all 1350 RP skins do go on sale when they're initially released for 975 RP. :]

If you have to process the lines individually, why not just add new lines all together? Would seem like better spent time, and probably make people feel better about the price difference.

I like a lot of the skins you guys are making lately, but I'm also on the fence about feeling good about spending 1350 RP on a skin unless it really stands out to me. An example of that for me was the Reaper Soraka skin, but I think even that skin would be even stronger if it had newly voiced lines.

Adding new lines is a much time-consuming process, I'm pretty sure- Writing all the lines, getting the actor to act them, etc., it'd make the process at least a month or two longer I think. It requires a lot of resources, really, from what I understand. :P

As DwarvenGiant mentioned below, getting new VO takes a significantly longer time as compared to voice processing.

We do add new lines if we think the thematic could benefit heavily from it. In some cases, VO processing works for the thematic based on the lines the champion already has.

"Oh you don't think the skin is worth it, well it's okay it's cheaper if you buy it right away". It sounds like a major cop-out/excuse.

That may be true, but I don't understand why people are downvoting Katey. They are just merely answering the question. They aren't the one that chooses the prices, doesn't even has a say period with them most likely.
