{Champion Rework Concept} Twisted Fate- It's all in the cards

Hmmkay, now after making threads about Galio and Vladimir I found yet another outdated champion that could use some reworking love. First of all: This Rework-Concept won't be as radical as the ones I proposed with the other two champs. I just want to turn Twisted Fate from a card thrower into a BADASS card thrower!

**As always, lore first (so everyone knows who we are actually talking about): **

Although born to poor gypsy parents, the champion known as Twisted Fate was able to gamble his way to prosperity as a card shark in the seedy underground gambling circuits of Demacia and Noxus. No matter how close the authorities came to catching him, the rogue always found a way to slip through their fingers. Despite his good fortune, he was never able to win that which he truly desired - the ability to control magic. When Twisted Fate learned of an experiment being conducted in Zaun that might help him with his wish, he did the only thing a gambler of his worth could do - he went all in and volunteered for the experiment.

Conducted by the infamous Dr. Xavier Rath, Twisted Fate was told that the wager for such participation might be steep. He might change forever, or nothing might happen, or he might die horribly. Pain, however, was likely a part of the deal no matter the outcome. These were hardly the worst odds the gambler had faced; his hopes raised, Twisted Fate underwent the experiment, enduring what he must for a chance at his dream. Then, it ended - with seemingly no effect whatsoever. The gypsy rogue flew into a murderous rage, but, before he could strike down the team, he suddenly teleported himself miles away. With a sly grin, he realized his luck had won out yet again. He now brings his luck and rakish charm to the Institute of War, where he is the Champion of choice for many - especially the gambling kind. To this day, Twisted Fate has avoided his inevitable reunion with Dr. Rath. The Card Master knows, however, that a confrontation is coming.

While the future may be mysterious and unknown to most, Twisted Fate is certain that his future lies within the cards.

Notes to the Lore: Outdated IoW reference, but not as important. Also he attended to a magical ritual that achieves to give normal people magical powers, conducted by a magic-scientist who's name sounds awefully like “Xerath”. A replicated Ascension Ritual? That would actually make sense since the powers ascension grants depend on the ascending person. Nasus and Renekton took the forms of Shuriman gods who they identified with, as well as Azir.

Also... it's possible that it was Xerath... illusion magic shouldn't be hard of a being that is magic itself...

But this thread is not supposed to be about ascension theories, but about a reworked ability kit! Let's get back to topic, no?

So, following my usual method, let's try to extract the main themes from this:

  • Zero Alignment/Criminal: obviously he isn't attached to any city-state or fraction. Other than Graves, who can be imagined to be working as a mercenary, Twisted Fate works for no one and is completely independent. Giving this champ an ability kit focused on high team-dependance would be a wrong approach.

  • Elusive/Hard to catch (self explanatory)

  • Gambler/Hustler/Con-Artist... This theme screams to have a mechanic including stealing gold built into his kit. But not like it is currently... I explain my viewpoint on this later in this post. Also, he's not a character for direct confrontation (extreme opposites being Vi and Graves f. ex.)

  • Magic – sort off. While surely being granted true magic power, Twisted Fate is more like a stage magician in the way he uses his new powers. Tricks, deceiving, magic card tricks...

Okay, now, let's take a look at the current Gameplay: In his role Twisted Fate is clearly a mage – no doubts on that. But his gameplay pattern is too linar and while efficient sometimes not really impressive. Sure, you can blow up squshies with a single lichbane-pick a card-stacked deck- basic attack later on. But that pattern is neither fun, awesome to use or getting it used on yourself and overall rather “meh”.

Now, Riot seems to have a good grasp on how Twisted Fate SHOULD feel like when playing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEnsqpThaFg

Heck, they even named the cinematic after him... so, how is this different from how it is in game? It's quite simple actually: if you “throw” cards in game, you either basic attack, which is neither impressive nor awesome, OR you use your Q, an ability that sends out three cards flying so lame and slow like some crippled hoverdisks. The only part of his kit that's somehow close to his theme is his W...

Ok, but one thing after another, let's start with the current passive:

It sucks. Not in terms of balance or usefulness, nono, don't get me wrong here. It IS an useful ability, but what does it do? Reward you for lasthitting? THE THING YOU WOULD DO ANYWAY ON WITH EVERY OTHER CHAMP? It contributes NOTHING unique to your game-play pattern.

You have no uses for this passive since it a) has nothing to do with fighting and b) it's always up anyway, you basically forget that you have it. I still want to have something connected to gold in that kit, so I tried to find a better version of this ability - also a gold-only skill is pretty much useless lategame.

Ok, now the Q: I think I stated my point about this above. Also, you will almost never use all three cards to full advantage. You will try to hit the enemy with one, and hope that maybe, in a teamfight, the others will hit too. This ability will, of course, remain as your “Offensive throwing cards spell”, but I think there is a way to make it more awesome.

The W:Pick a Card. Twisted Fate's signature move and card-pick minigame. While the single card's effects can be debated on, I'd love to keep this spell as it is.

The E: Ok, here's another thing that can be scrapped. Attack Speed itself is a weird stat buff, and the passive part... sure, you can time it right for some poke timed with a W, but it doesn't really do anything. I propose scrapping that skill completely and merging it with the passive, adding a new ability on this slot.

The ultimate: Twisted Fate's teleportation powers are canon, so removing them would be a really bad idea. I have some ideas ready for this part tho...

So, now to the new version I have in mind:

PASSIVE: Gambler's Trickery: “Part 1: Twisted Fate builds up stacks on every basic attack, at four stacks his basic attack deals bonus magical damage on hit and the stacks are consumed.”

“Part 2: Hitting an enemy champion with a basic attack will steal X gold from this champion, depending on how many stacks you have build up already. This cannot affect the same champion twice within X seconds.”

Note: how or if this will effect minions can still be debated.

Q: Wild Cards:

“Twisted Fate throws out a single card in a straight line, passing through minions but getting stuck on the first enemy champion it hits. Can be recast multiple times (in a limited period of time) and applies on hit effects, including Pick a Card & Gambler's Trickery”

Note: This is a bit closer to "throwing a card" than his current Q. It's called WILD cards after all... not “slow-as-fuck”-cards...

W: Pick a Card:

“Twisted Fate chooses a magic card from his deck, and uses that for his next attack, causing bonus effects. The bonus effects and damage are increased if Pick a Card is used to empower a Wild Card.

If a non-hard-cc-card was used to load a Wild Card and hits an enemy, Pick a Card immediately comes off cooldown.”

Note: Quite simple: it still enchants auto attacks, but it's way more efficient if used in combination with a Q. Aslo it rewards you for hitting your shots properly.

E: Magician's Curtain (New ability)

“Creates a veil of cards around Twisted Fate, temporarily disabling wards for the duration and blocking vision. Entering the barrier will give you vision on Twisted Fate again.

Casting Wild Card's through this curtain will increase the skill-shot’s width, as well as it's damage.”

Note: That last part is just something that came to my mind just now – not that important, but worth to give a thought to I think. The idea was giving Fate an utility tool that would work with his kit. Its functionality can be compared to Akali's shroud, although this ability does not grant stealth. It's supposed to give you a “moment to breath”, so you can load and aim your next shot properly, or give you enough time to set your ult without enemies noticing.

R:Destiny

“After a short channel Twisted Fate shoots out cards in all directions, revealing all enemies hit and setting a “stage” for X seconds. On this area, Destiny can be recast to teleport multiple times inside this area as long as the ability is active – there is a short cooldown of X seconds between each “jump”.

I think the ultimate change needs some explanation. First of all, what's wrong with the current ultimate ability? Actually nothing. It's just too strong, especially when you have a team that can capitalize on the strategic options it gives. On the other hand it's nothing that Twisted Fate could use in a fight. His ultimate ability in fight is... running away? And since the cast animation is too long it's not really useful for that. It's only real use is for chasing and finishing off enemies after you have won the fight anyways.

This, together with his current E, limit's Twisted Fate's fight options to two abilities, both having quite some cooldown... making his possibilities in fights quite... “meh”.

In my version the Ultimate is still primary an utility tool, but now it can be used skillfully in combat to get yourself out of danger and also to get yourself into a good shooting position for your empowered Wild Cards. Of course, passive stacks and "pick a card" can be carried through the “jumps”.

The primary goal of this kit is to add more complexity and a higher skill cap to the cardshark, as well as a synergy of the basic abilities.

Skillful players will be able to hit multiple W-Q combos in a single fight while utilizing the powers of the Ultimate and the E to the full extend.

With this kit he might be even stronger than he is now, but also harder to play – and with that giving options for counterplay, his damage being centred on dodgeable skillshots

So, what do you guys think of this?

I'll be glad to hear your opinion on this! And not just "Muh he's okay now, he needs no rework!" please. I want to hear your thoughts on this very concept!

For everyone who doesn't like it... here, just look at this adorable Poro!

Twisted Fate is in dire need of a rework and this seems like a very viable solution

I think this is a great option for twisted fate, although my personal opinion is makins his ultimate: "Shinning Shimering Splendor" Twisted fate hops onto a large Wild Card and rides in the casted direction (similar to Sion's ult) all enemies he rides into are hit with a base magic damage and 30% or their gold is stolen and given to Twisted Fate. After reaching the max range or recasting the ult Twisted Fate hops off of the card and is given full stacks on his passive. (similar to the passive on rengar's ult)

(p.s. ^thats a joke but it would be really fun to ues)

Really I have no idea how Riot has not said anything of Tf's compensation for Dfg removal. Maybe he might be one of those champs who didn't 'need' it. Otherwise, the idea is great, Q allowing on hit effects makes those occasional jungle Tf wave clear easier. The only thing i'd be sad about is now he doesn't have his attack speed passive :T. That's what exactly allowed him to get his stacks.

This would be amazing. I love this. But would his w's effects still be the same? I don't think he should have a two second stun with a larger range than his auto attack. That would be a bit much. But i'm going to look at your other propositions.

Like the rework, but..

  1. Stealing gold from other players, I can already see the nono from rito. To me, it seems, it would overpowered if it was a high amount, and would be useless if it was a low amount. I couldn't think of a set amount that would be alright, and takes away the point of starving in a lane with him.
  2. I'm not sure about the disabling wards, because if he has to be on the ward or even near it to disable it, then... well the enemy would see him disable it, or notice the ward is "gone" as the time they place it and it disappearing would most likely be noticed also, but if it was a range where he can place it over the ward and it disables it, then I understand, but it wasn't really said in the ability you stated.
  3. His ult seem interesting, but lacking a bit, to me, if he is a mage, most likely, wouldn't just port to them to try to kill them, because the enemy is going to know and be ready since it spreads cards out and sets a stage. But on the other hand, I do see it as a good chaser and catch, but ultimately if he doesn't hit anything, then it seems useless, because he cannot teleport anywhere, and if used close range, it doesn't help him at all, unless it does damage too, but that wasn't stated either..

Any whoo, sorry for long response, just posting my two cents D;

to 1.) Well it was also a big "nono" to have something like the kalista ult - or like the gnar passive. And yet now we have them and it seems to work somehow. How about a medium amount of gold-steal? Also the gold steal is tied to how many stacks he has. If you make him hit you when he has only one basic attack stat, you lose barely gold - if you come to close with full stacks, he will steal a lot. Just keep an eye on his passive and you'll be fine ^^

I didn't see anything on any nono's with kalista or gnar, only saw "thats different, maybe include some trololols" But with gold stealing. It's just not viable, because those other things didn't have something that could literally lock in a starve. By saying have a medium amount of gold steal and then saying, little stack = minimal, and large stack equals a lot. Contradicts lol. =.= But it wouldn't even matter to the player playing him, there's tons of ways to literally sit there and just keep basic attacking and stealing gold. Thats just op. Like me playing raka with supp hit gold gain masteries and gold hit trinket. I sit there constantly basic attacking them gaining about 8-10 gold a hit. Twisted fate doing the same thing with more gold outcome and them literally losing their gold? That's oh oh oh pee. You could potentially make them stay under gold for a while. AAANNDD with all this, like I said, if it is only say, 1 stack = 1 gold, 5 stacks = 5 gold. Thats just not worth even being a passive... because thats just like his passive now, except its better 1-6 gold per kill rolling tha dice. It even use to be a global passive for all the allies/// And to be honest, if that was an actual passive, forget minion kills, imma just sit there and farm off of the person infront of me. They lose gold, i gain more ontop of what i kill and earn. :/ It's just too game altering to do that.

And now that I re-read all this, i think TF needs a re-work not close to what he has now.. Sion rework was pretty big, changing 3 abilites completely. Heimer, [ has had so many reworks ] But from the stage before what he is now, was pretty snazzy upgrade. Bit diff in all abilities. Thats now how I feel about TF. Maybe keep his Card selection, but change everything else :p

Anywhoo! Reply! :D

I love the ultimate idea that would be really fun and interesting to play with and against, most people seem to be ok with his w mechanic but I just wish that if rito rework him they rework him with the bilgewater tales that just came out at the forefront of their minds because i love the light that casts him in. I think that TF rework should take priority over most other ideas rito might have because so many people love tf's character design but hate his kit meaning he is barely ever played. I hope a riot admin reads this and takes note, if there was a tf rework I would be so happy and I know loads of other people would be too. But yeah sorry got carried away there love the concept and i think the e could be a really interesting mechanic, good job if this was a real rework i would be over the moon.
