The reason for each thing: As much as it does not seem so "romantic" like that, Lienza was not a spurt of inspiration I had in the middle of the night, in fact, I just kept thinking for long periods about what kind of character I'd like to see in the League of Legends, I was doing everything the way I liked it. Of course, it was not a "spat of things I like," I analyzed the game for a long time and did my best to add a character that added to the game and not simply "looked cool."

It was not something "cut from limitations," because I'm not trying to make art (which in itself has as ambiguous a meaning as freedom), but a work of character design. I'm not trying to pay for scholarly, I just want to work on it in the future and making suggestions for champions for the league was a good way to put the useful together.

Amazingly, one of the most difficult parts for me was thinking of Lienza's face. In fact, I never cared about her face or nationality - because in that character, at least - those things were not very important to me, because all the other characteristics of her already spoke what I want to speak through her. But I ended up deciding to put her as Asian, because her eyes (which were meant to be a heart divided in the middle), reminiscent of Asian eyes, and so I did. I know I wrote later that "design is not a matter of uni duni tê", but in this particular situation, with all those elements that I have described, it was the decision that I found the most certain to do.

But something that really challenged me was trying to express through her human form the fact that she is a loving, tragic, and running person. If you look at Tahm Kench for about 2 seconds, you'll think, "Well, he's a monster that has a huge mouth and a bigger tongue, so probably it has something to do with bites and ... Hit the enemies with the tongue?". Just as you'll notice the fact that he's wearing ragged clothes and being an aquatic creature, you'll intuitively think he's some kind of traveler, or some boogeyman of rivers. And the fact that you think he's a "bogeyman" is totally related to his body shape, since he's a fat ball with a look that only a child would think of as a bogeyman with arms and large short legs. In the same way that you understand that he is not a predator (like Kha'zix or Cho'gath for example), but rather a Tank character.

I know I've been holding on, but look at how much information you have to spend just looking at the character.

How to convey all the information I want with the look of Lienza? Well, the fabric (or "syrup") of it already expresses enough that it is good for something, after all, it is part of her mechanics. I needed to make out that she is a loving character, how am I going to do this? Literally putting a heart in it, and it's those weird "antennas" of it. And since I would like to use something that would detract from her movements, I thought of using a theme related to lines, after all, she already has a trail that can remember a lot of something like "use a ball from there not to get lost in a maze" , which, together with the heart-antennae, gives an air of fragility, fable and a sense of innocence and exaggerated plasticity, doing justice to her movements. But I also needed to "talk" through her that she runs (and a lot), how to make the player see her as a moving character? How to give a sense of speed?

As you'll see in the drafts, I might as well make Lienza a kind of chimerical being similar to Xayah, for it would be much simpler to give the idea that she is a mystical character who runs. BUT, I felt that it would take her personality from a certain point, because she would not be "Lienza the witch of the knots", she "only" would be a creature that runs (and would probably protect the forests, would be a good use Brazilian folklore).

If for you, it still seems like I'm talking bullshit, let's look at Xayah herself and Rakan, two beings Vastayeses (that's how it's written?). Xayah is not only a trebuchet purple dove, she is a revolutionary, with a rebel personality, independent and almost anarchic, at the same time that she is super intelligent and a great strategist (even because, to be a solitary revolutionary and not die in the process , you need to be at least a genius), that is, a legend. Already Rakan, he ... He is a hollow head, but his lack of scruples, stupidity, pride and energetic personality make this bright peacock a magical being who at the same time manages to be an asshole, manages to be an innocent creature full of passion for dance, life and Xayah.

I might as well have made Lienza a human and said: "But the league statistics show that the human characters are the most played" (insert here image of Bumblebee transvestido). But I wanted a character with a tragic past and a message of hope, but if I made her like a chimerical creature, I would have to take those facts into account to develop her appearance and color. In Xayah, the clothes, the pose and the way she walked have already shown a lot of the character, and if I made Lienza a chimerical creature, I could not do it the way I intended. For the ideal colors would be brown, orange and yellow (to get the idea of ​​energy and speed), but if I changed to the colors I used in Lienza, I would become a weird looking creature with a "do not fit" look.

Yes, I could have made her a thousand and one different ways, have done her magic and strokes as if they were sneezes of colored paint, have made her like a graceful beta fish and among hundreds of other ideas that I had to discard. One idea I would love to have made of it (and you can see it in most drafts) would be to develop it as a shadow-controlling being, but that would not fit the League very well. For the only black character is Nocturne, and his lack of color evidences the fact that he has NO feelings, of being an abominable creature. And even Zed, who controls the shadows, has no black color, only dark and sober tones in contrast to the bright red, which gives an idea of ​​anger and violence (even the Aatrox who is well, a kind of god of war , it is not black).

In this way, character design seems to be a super limited and rigid artifice, but art, in the same way, is limited by its "blank canvas" (in parentheses because there are thousands of different artistic expressions, such as sculptures for example) and by the eyes of those who see them (I say this because I can not understand the pictures of Picasso kkk). One of the first lessons of Design is to learn to discard, to be decisive, to decide with reason and not because "it came out in uni duni tê".

And I could have made her a joyful, energetic and passionate character for the world and people (not unlike Rakan, to be honest). And being honest, THERE IS NO "WRONG" (actually it does have kkk, but what I meant is that all the final product options could be equally good, but I chose that one) BUT, I wanted a character with a past tragic, with regrets, a character who demonstrated the altruism and gentleness that people could spread in their darkest moments (unlike many who redistribute their frustrations and grudges to everyone around them). I wanted a character who would show that there is always a way out, there is always a way, that even the world is crushing you, you can still do something even bigger than your dreams. Well, let's face it, I'm no saint to compare myself to Lienza, and likewise, Lienza is no saint. Even doing the best she can, she still makes mistakes, because that is one of the essences of the human being. And of course, looking at the drafts and the lines, you can see that being the way she is, the fact that she makes mistakes continues to hurt her like a knife (and the guilt of her own mistakes actually affects anyone).

These are the "whys of every thing" in character design, I presented my line of reasoning and the reasons that led me to every thing. But none of what I have said are absolute laws, nor irrefutable truths. I never did a game design course, and what I did, I did based on the advice of some of my friends who work in the area, especially with the darling Diana Doria (I hope you have no problem mentioning her name here).

Daydreams of lore: As a result of 5 months of enlistment, I ended up trying to think of ways to fit it into the League universe. It's just daydreams that would be interesting to see in the league lore.

And referring to Lienza's mistakes, it's not just about "saving the wrong person" or lying by saying that someone is still looking for the individual on his deathbed. It also affects the entire Runeterra. If you look in the lines and in the story, even her tears are loaded with destructive power. She's been crying for centuries in a cave, can you imagine the kind of catastrophe that "pool" of magical tears can generate? The living beings that your magic has transformed can become monsters!

And of course, another reason to put our dear Ryze in another complicated situation: what will he do with her? He can not capture her and Lienza herself has said that she tried to pull the rune from her, but it resulted in a cataclysm. If he takes Lienza to the magic neutralizer safe, and tries to remove the rune, can the volatile magic end up triggering a chain reaction with the other runes? (and honestly, what a fucking idea to put all the "nuclear bombs" of the world in the SAME spot).

With a character loaded with graceful and plastic movements, as well as being related to the spiraling themes inspired by our "beloved" Van Gogh (in quotation marks because he was a handsome asshole), it would be almost a sin to leave our "dear" Jhin de out (and certainly has nothing to do with being one of my favorite characters).

IF I were part of the creative team of the League of Legends, I would love to put those two characters in a more intimate relationship. The characters 'love relationships are rarely quoted or exploited (for various reasons), and sometimes it seems that they "wake up heroes, brush heroes' teeth, pee heroes, work heroes" (as Holy Colossus says). And I wanted to explore a bit of this with Lienza and Jhin, as quoted by Jhin's own designer, "he does not want to kill anyone, but his madness forces him to do, which holds him in an endless cycle of suffering and pleasure."

And since Lienza is immortal and was going through Ionia, why not join the useful to the pleasant?
