[Champion Concept] Ethea, The Primordial Spirit
Hey y’all!!! Thanks for checking out my champion concept :). It’s been a while but i finally picked up the concept making again. This is actually a concept based on one i had posted a long time ago, but this one is different in everything but her name. Therefor, i didn’t call it a rework but more of a new champion all together. I made her and her lore within the concept of a series of champions im calling “The storybook series”. These champions are all beings out of Runterra’s local folklore. If you are interested, here are the others i’ve made so far: For Ionia: Chayon, The Shepherd of the Afterlife who is a benevolent spirit that guides lost and tormented souls to the afterlife. For Shurima: Sham’a, The Candle Maker who is a jolly spirit of light and kindness that protects those in need through his candles. For The Freljord: Torvald, The Storm Bellow who is a powerful spirit that creates storms and thunder. For all of Valoran: Laurell, The Forest Guardian who is a nature deity that pops up in multiple tales all around Valoran and protects nature with fury.
Lemme know what you think :) If you downvote, please note why so I can work on improving my concepts.
Identity:
Name: Ethea Gender: Usually female Race: Spirit Birthplace: Demacia

Appearance: The picture I gave is not mine and I take no credit for its creation. It just fits what I have in mind for one of her forms. Since she is able to change her element, I think that her body would change accordingly. She would still have a female figure, but with details from that particular element. Her voice would also change accordingly. From a flow-y and echo-y sound for the Topas to a fiery and rasping sound for the ruby and a stoic and calm sound for the jade.
Kit:
I imagined her to be a multi purpose champion. Her Ocean Topaz would allow for a more supporting build. Her Terestial Jade would make her more tanky and the Fiery Ruby would give her serious APC potential. Either way she would be best as a support or midlaner, though I can imagine people building her full tank with the Jade and playing her top, even though her base stats aren’t really suited for that role. I tried giving her some balanced stats, but this is the first time I do such a thing so forgive me if I have failed miserably...
Health: 489 - 1747 Attack Damage: 51 - 104 Health Regen.: 5.7 - 15.9 Attack Speed: 0.625 (+0% - 29.8%) Mana: 324 - 1174 Mana Regen.: 11.5 - 18.3 Armor: 22.1 - 79.1 Magic Res.: 30.0 Range: 530 Mov. Speed: 330
Passive, 3 elements: Ethea starts the game with 3 buttons above her items bar. These are the 3 gems in which she stores her power. Clicking on one of these gems will change Ethea's form and put all the gems on a 30 second cooldown. Ethea can refine her gem and empower it at levels 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 and 18, with a maximum of 3 upgrades per element. Every element will count its own cooldowns. If you for example use the Topaz version of her Q and switch to the Jade, you will be able to use the Q again, but then the Terrestrial version.
Ocean's Topaz: Ethea gains 10% / 15% / 30% / 45% movement speed, 25% / 30% / 35% / 40% bonus mana and 25% / 50% / 75% / 100% bonus mana regeneration. When her mana is full, the regenerated mana is spilled into the area around her, restoring it to her allies.
Terestial Jade: Ethea gains 15% / 20% / 25% / 30% Armor, 15% / 20% / 25% / 30% Magic Resist and 25% / 30% / 35% / 40% max health. She also gains a shield of 150 / 300 / 450 / 600 (+5% max health) that regenerates when she is out of combat for at least 10 seconds.
**Fiery Ruby: ** Ethea gains 5% / 15% / 25% / 35% Ability Power, 5% / 10% / 15% / 20% cooldown reduction and 25 / 40 / 55 / 70 units bonus casting range upon her Auto Attacks and Abilities. Additionally, her body glows hot with the fury of the sun itself, constantly dealing 5 / 10 / 15 / 20 (+5% AP) as AoE magic damage every second in a 100 unit radius around her.
Q, Primordial Fury: Mana cost: 50 / 60 / 70 / 80 / 90 Mana Cooldown: 14 / 13 / 12 / 11 / 10 seconds
Ocean’s Topaz: Ethea summons a whirlpool of water at a target location that will slowly grow in size (from a 300 unit radius to a 500 unit radius) for 4 seconds, slowly pulling the enemy towards the centre. The speed at which the enemies are pulled towards the centre is 25% / 30% / 35% / 40% / 45% of Ethea's bonus movement speed which is also the amount with which the enemy is slowed if they try to move against the current. If whirlpool is hit by Primordial Fury (Fiery Ruby ability), the water will start to boil, dealing 20 / 32 / 44 / 56 / 68 (+ 15% bonus AP) area of effect magic damage every second. (Whirlpool can only be Icy OR Boiling, not both). When enemies in the Whirlpool are hit by Natural Gift (Topaz Version), it will become Icy, freezing all effected enemies and stunning them for 2 seconds in stead of slowing them. (Whirlpool can only be Icy OR Boiling, not both).
Terrestrial Jade: Ethea sends a boulder hurling at a target location dealing 70 / 120 / 170 / 220 / 270 (+ 45% AP) area of effect Physical Damage in a radius of 125 units and pushing all enemies a short distance away from the impact. If this ability hits an enemy frozen by Natural Gift (Topaz Version) it will break the stun, but deal 30% of the dealt damage as bonus true damage.
Fiery Ruby: Ethea sends a ball of fire in a straight line which explodes upon impact, dealing 40 / 70 / 130 / 190 / 250 (+ 65% AP) magic damage and setting the ground on fire in a 175 unit radius dealing an additional 12 / 24 / 36 / 48 / 60 (+ 20% AP) damage to all enemies in the area. If this ability hits a Whirlpool created by Primordial Fury (Topaz Version) the water will start to boil, dealing 20 / 32 / 44 / 56 / 68 (+ 15% bonus AP) area of effect magic damage every second. (Whirlpool can only be Icy OR Boiling, not both).
W, Natural gift: Mana cost: 60 / 65 / 70 / 75 / 80 Mana Cooldown: 20 / 19 / 18 / 17 / 16 seconds
Ocean’s Topaz: Ethea exhales her icy breath in a cone in a target direction, dealing 80 / 125 / 170 / 215 / 260 (+ 65% AP) magic damage to all hit enemies and reducing their movement speed by 20%. When this ability hits an enemy inside a Whirlpool created by Primordial Fury (Topaz Version), it will become Icy, freezing all effected enemies and stunning them for 2 seconds in stead of slowing them. (Whirlpool can only be Icy OR Boiling, not both).
Terrestrial Jade: Ethea condenses her skin into powerful diamond, doubling her bonus Armor and Magic Resistance for 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 seconds.
Fiery Ruby: Ethea blasts herself through the air by erupting lava from underneath her and follows the cursor for 1.5 seconds at twice her movement speed, and gaining 20% / 25% / 30% / 35% / 40% bonus movement speed which decays over 2 seconds upon landing. enemies within a 175 unit radius around her while in the air take 25 / 50 / 75 / 100 / 125 (+ 20% AP) magic damage. Enemies within a 175 unit radius of her original position and landingspot will take 60 / 100 / 140 / 180 / 220 (+ 50% AP) magic damage. When Ethea has condensed her skin into diamond (Natural Gift Terrestrial Jade version) while casting this ability, any enemy hit by the landing will be stunned for 1 second.
E, Elemental Missile: Mana cost: 40 / 50 / 60 / 70 / 80 Mana Cooldown: 14 / 13 / 12 / 11 / 10
Ocean's Topaz:_ Ethea fires up to three orbs of water into the air, each homing in on an allied target within range, each shielding the target in a bubble for 2.5% / 5% / 7.5% / 10% / 12.5% (+2.5% per 50 AP) of the targets maximum health for 3 / 3.5 / 4 / 4.5 / 5 seconds. The missiles prioritise allied champions with low health. When effected allies are hit by Natural Gift (Topaz Version) the bubbles freeze over and will last until they are completely broken down.
**Terrestrial Jade: **_ Ethea fires up to three shards of stone into the air, each homing in on the cursor and come crashing down in 0.5 second intervals, each dealing 25 / 50 / 75 / 100 / 125 (+ 20% AP) Physical Damage. If this ability is performed when Ethea has condensed her body into diamond, each missile will deal an additional 10% AP Physical Damage and will break enemy shielding effects.
Fiery Ruby:_ Ethea fires up to three balls of fire into the air, each homing in on a different target within range, dealing 70 / 110 / 160 / 210 / 260 (+ 60% AP) magic damage. These missiles prioritise enemies with low health. If there are not enough enemies within her cast range, any additional balls of fire will burn up mid air, but will refund 20 Mana each.
R, Force of Nature: Mana cost: 100 Mana Cooldown: 100 / 85 / 70 seconds Ethea calls upon the forces of nature to change the world around her. She creates a zone around her with a radius of 450 units that lasts for 4 / 5 / 6 seconds and has a different effect depending on which two Elemental Gems have the highest level (if all Gems are equal in level, the effect is chosen at random).
Topaz and Jade: Ethea soaks the earth around her with water, creating a muddy field that will slow down enemies by 20% / 30% / 40% for 2 seconds, until they come to a complete standstill (root) for the remaining duration of the ability. The effect stops when the enemy leaves the effect range.
Jade and Ruby: Ethea fractures the ground, allowing molten rock to cover the area that will slow down enemies by 15% / 20% / 25% and deal 8 / 24 / 40 (+ 11% AP) magic damage every half second for the full duration of the ability.
Ruby and Topaz: Ethea condenses the moisture in the air around her into a thick fog of steam, Shrouding allies like they would in a bush and healing them for 50 / 75 / 100 (+10% AP) health every second for the full duration. Wards and enemy units within the fog grant vision in it just as in normal bushes.
Playstyle:
General: Ethea is a champion that with a versatile playstyle. For a tanky support or toplaner, you’d chose the Terrestial Jade and adopt a counter tank playstyle. For a midlaner, you’d chose the Fiery Ruby and go for the full AP damage monster build. As support, you’d chose the Ocean’s Topaz and build some useful support items while you are at it. Either way, you can’t go wrong with her. You can even switch gems mid teamfight for some interesting plays (if you have enough skill). Just remember that every gem has its downsides. Every ability has a unique interaction with another ability that will empower it. Pay close attention to what connects with what to optimise your plays!! It is recommended to focus on one play-style and gem and have a secondary gem for combo opportunities.
Terrestial Ethea: The Terestial Jade may have a defensive ability with Natures Gift and a unique shield braking ability with Elemental Missile, but you’re base stats aren’t even close to that of the standerd tanks/fighters. You will have trouble getting started early, before you have had the chance to build some items. Chose your starting ability wisely. Are you up against an agressive or pokey laner, chose Nature’s gift to help you survive some early poke. Up against a melee toplaner, try starting with Primordial Fury for a chance to push them away and deal some damage (use your range as an advantage). If you have managed to get past the early laning fase, the hardships won’t just stop. If you are succesful in harassing you opponent or even got some kills on him, they will be building some armor. Keep this in mind. You wont be doing the heaps of damage you think you do. In stead, play smart. Use Elemental Missile and Primordial Fury in tandem to break through possible shields and move them around. During this time, you can deal some damage. If they get to close, use Nature’s Gift to pump up you defences and wither down the last few scraps of health they have. Do not expect any fast kills in this form. Be patient, like the earth. The best secondary gem to chose in this case would be the Oceans Topaz. The combination of her Q and W will allow the Jade version of her Q to deal some extra damage and gives the option to stun your enemies.
Fiery Ethea: Damage....Damage, Damage and more Damage. Thats what this form is all about. No matter where you play her, she will be able to dish out MASSIVE damage. This however, comes with a downside. She does not have a lot of defences in this form, nor a lot of mobility or CC (aside from Nature’s Gift, which is more a gap closer then a disengage) so play safe and from the back lines. When in lane, your best chance is to build some mana and just harass the life out of your opponent. Make use of your extra range granted by The Fiery Ruby. This form calls for an “Offence is the best defence” kind of strategy. For some easy starting hits you can go for Elemental missile or Primordial Fury as your first ability. If you are up against an agressive or evasive opponent, maybe take Nature’s Gift for an easy escape or gap closer. Using this gem in combination with the Oceans Topaz will open up some nice play-making abilities. Asside from the Topaz's Q and W stun combo, the Ruby and Topaz Q combo will boil the very skin of your opponents bones!!
Ocean’s Ethea: In this form, Ethea has a lot of utility but less damage or tankiness then the Jade or the Ruby. This makes her a squishy, but valuable team-mate. With powerful CC abilities, she can dominate the botlane with her ADC aswel as keep him/her alive. The best starting ability would be Elemental Missile. This will allow you to protect yourself and your lane mate during early trades. Starting with Primordial Fury can help you secure an early kill and Nature’s Gift may help in escaping an enemy gank or can function as a gap closer. When using this Gem you can be a little bit more flexible with your choice of secondary Gem. Go for the Ruby for some extra damage and movement or the Jade for some extra tankiness and utility.
Lore:
Report on Ethea from “Legendary beings of Valoran.” - By Candurill Gellius, schollar and historian at the Royal Acadamy of Demacia.
There is no race on Valoran that is so fascinated with their own demise as mankind. The end of the world, floods, earthquakes, infernos, hurricanes and any other natural disaster frequent many stories. Ancient Demacian texts speak of a being that wields these fearsome powers of nature. Named Ethea, The Primordial Spirit, she is described as a being of a different time, older then the land itself. As one of the creators of the world, she went into a slumber, deep underground near the roots of Valoran itself. My research however, suggest an event that woke her from her slumber. Powerful sorcerers (most of the ancient manuscripts write them off as Noxians, but considering the turmoil between our neighbouring kingdoms I am not sure if this is the truth or just propaganda) had broken into Ethea’s catacombs and wanted to steal her power for themselves. They paid for their foolishness with their lives…
Following is a translation of the readable part of a marble tablet found during an excavation of the old Cathedoctus (old site of the Royal Acadamy). I have taken the liberty to fill in some parts that were damaged by time.
In a time long before the rune wars, before the fall of Shurima, before the land was even called Runeterra. A time when the world was still young and filled with chaotic magic, there lived beings of nature that are hardly ever seen in these modern times. (Modern times for whomever inscribed the text on the tablet, which is sadly unknown). They were spirits, powerful beings that wielded the primordial forces of the world to help it grow and flourish. Long before even the first Human sat foot in the world, these beings entered a long slumber, for they had played their part in creation and wouldn’t awaken until the end times. Ethea was young for such a being. Created mere ages before the long slumber. Yet she was one of the most powerful, wielding all forces of nature. Just as all other spirits, she hid away deep inside the earth to sleep. But her slumber would not last. Without any apparent reason, Ethea awakened one day. A magic circle had been drawn around her resting place and a glowing gem floated above her. As she looked around she saw disfigured corpses all around her, burned and bruised as if something had blasted them to pieces. Only one human was still alive, muttering something about a magical experiment that had failed. Unsure what to do, Ethea tried to use her power, but it did not work. She tried to mould the earth but it would not budge. She tried to churn the river but it would not comply. She tried to burst the human into flames but it would not kindle. Her eye then fell on the gem that still floated above the magic circle. It glowed with a familiar light and suddenly she knew. The humans had wanted to use her power for themselves, but failed and bound her power into a gem.
From there on the tablet has been broken. Ethea herself is not willing to speak of her own story, or (which is even more annoying) any other historical event that ever took place and she most certainly witnessed first hand. In all my attempts I have made to contact her, she made it abundantly clear that she has no more regard for the human race then WE have for rats...
