[Champion Concept] Laurell, The Forest Guardian

Candurill·12/14/2015, 6:24:52 PM·19 votes·2,778 views

Hey y'all!!! Thanks for checking out my champion concept :). I made her and her lore within the concept of a series of champions im calling "The storybook series". These champions are all beings out of Runterra's local folklore. If you are interested, here are the others i've made so far: For Ionia: Chayon, The Shepherd of the Afterlife who is a benevolent spirit that guides lost and tormented souls to the afterlife. For Shurima: Sham'a, The Candle Maker who is a jolly spirit of light and kindness that protects those in need through his candles. For The Freljord: Torvald, The Storm Bellow who is a powerful spirit that creates storms and thunder. For Demacia: Ethea, The Primordial Spirit who is the bringer of the end times that wields 3 forces of nature on the battlefield.

CCOS feedback: Hauron, The Stag Lord

Identity:

Name: Laurell Gender: Female Race: Fae Origin: Ancient Kumungu, Minotaur Tribes, Voodoo Lands, Etc. (but originally from The Glade)

Appearance:

https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/25/e1/e3/25e1e34bd236199d9b4c6f59cbe0d6e4.jpg

See picture (its not my art and I take no credit for it, but only use it as a general idea). Her voice would be jolly and exited (like a teenage girl) when moving or joking (and certain taunts to allies), but ruthless and angry when attacking or taunting.

Kit:

HEALTH: 489 – 1747 ATTACK DAMAGE: 51 – 104 HEALTH REGEN: 5.4 – 14.8 ATTACK SPEED: 0.644 (+0% – 44.4%) MANA: 377 – 1108 ARMOR: 19.7 – 87.7 MANA REGEN: 11.5 – 18.3 MAGIC RES: 30.0 RANGED: 550 MOV. SPEED: 335

Passive, Tree Spirit: Laurell will start the game with a Faerie tree seed in her inventory. She will be able to plant this seed on the nexus by activating the item and targeting it. From that moment on, a Faerie Tree will grow on the Nexus, that will spawn a Spriggan in that lane with every 2nd wave of minions that it spawns. Laurell will have a secondary bar above her item bar that can hold up to 3 Spriggans (bar is similar to Kindreds Mark bar). Clicking on one of the three buttons will allow you to command the Spriggan to move somewhere or protect an ally. If ordered to move somewhere it will stay at the target location, attacking anything that comes within its attack radius. If ordered to protect an ally it will follow that ally around and attack whatever is in range but prioritising that allies target. The Spriggan will make its way from the Nexus to Laurell and follow her around if it isn't given a command yet. The Spriggan has the following stats: • 400 health + 25 per level (Max 825) • 1 armor + 2 per level (Max 25) • 2.5 magic resist + 2.5 per level (Max 45) • Auto attacks do 20 magic damage + 5% of Laurel AP + 2 per champion level

One Spriggan will spawn at the start of the match, when Laurell plants the Faerie Tree.

Additionally, Spriggans will plant a Magical Seed on every enemy champion or monster they attack (with a 5 second cooldown for every spriggan). This Magical Seed will overgrow the champion and slow its movement and attacks by 2.5% (lvl1) / 5% (lvl6) / 7.5% (lvl11) / 10% (lvl16) (+2.5% per 150 AP) for a period of 3 (lvl1) / 4 (lvl6) / 5 (lvl11) / 6 (lvl16) seconds. The effect does not stack and after it has run its course, the effected champion or monster will be immune to the effect for 10 seconds.

Q, Engrain: Cooldown: 14 / 13 / 12 / 11 / 10 Mana Cost: 60 Mana Laurell summons magical roots from the ground at a target location, slowing all hit enemies by 20% / 25% / 30% / 35% / 40% and sapping a total of 70 / 120 / 170 / 220 / 270 (+ 45% AP) magic damage over a period of 2 seconds. When Engrain is cast within range of a Spriggan, the creature will throw itself at the target location and root all effected enemies in stead of slowing them and will heal itself for 20% of all the damage done. The Spriggan with the lowest health will always have always have priority.

W, Dryads Shroud: Cooldown: 15 / 14 / 13 / 12 / 11 Mana Cost: 80 / 85 / 90 / 95 / 100 Mana Active: Laurell summons a flurry of leaves with a 300 unit radius at a target location for 3 / 3.5 / 4 / 4.5 / 5 seconds. While in inside this flurry, all units (allied and enemy) become shrouded as if they were in a bush (units inside the bush can see each other). Any enemy unit caught in the flurry will takes 20 / 25 / 30 / 35 / 40 (+ 30% AP) magic damage per second. Allied units that enter the flurry gain a burst of 30% / 35% / 40% / 45% / 50% movement speed that decays over a period of 2 seconds. The Forest Sentinel and Spriggans inside the flurry gain 20% / 22.5% / 25% / 27.5% / 30% attack speed and will be healed for 20% of all the damage done to enemies by this ability.

E, Guardian Spirit: Cooldown: 30 / 28 / 26 / 24 / 22 seconds Mana Cost: 70 / 80 / 90 / 100 / 110 Passive: 2.5% / 4% / 5.5% / 7% / 8.5% of all the damage done to enemies that are effected by Magical Seeds is healed to all allied units that attack it. Active: Laurell can target a nearby Spriggan and empower them to become a Forest Sentinel. This empowered spriggan has stronger stats, is bigger and has a melee range (250 units) cone attack that pushes back all hit enemies for a few units. It's attacks will no longer apply Magical Seeds. Forest Sentinel stat boosts on top of the normal Spriggan stats: • 275 / 375 / 475 / 575 / 675 bonus health • 25 / 45 / 55 / 65 / 75 bonus armor • 35 / 40 / 45 / 50 / 55 bonus magic resistance • Auto attacks deal 70 / 80 / 90 / 110 / 120 magic damage (+ 10% AP) in a cone, pushing back all hit enemies for 10 units.

Laurell can only have one Forest Sentinel at a time.

R, Reap and Sow: Cooldown: 21 / 19 / 17 / 15 / 13 seconds Mana Cost: 70 / 100 / 130 (for Reap, Sow is free) This ability has 2 different effects Reap: Laurell uses magic to cut off a sapling from the Faerie Tree she has planted. Doing this will change this ability into Sow. If Reap is used on an enemy unit, it will deal 110 / 190 / 270 (+ 60% AP) magic damage and applies Magical Seeds. Sow: Laurell plants the Sapling of the Faerie Tree on a target allied structure or champion. The sapling will grow out into a network of roots and leaves, forming natural armor. The armor will form a shield equal to 10% / 15% / 20% of the target champion or structure's health that will replenish itself if it is not broken entirely and isn't hit by enemy champions or large monsters for at least 2 seconds. Additionally, the effected champion or structure will apply Magical Seeds to any enemy champion they hit.

Gameplay:

Jungle Laurell: As a spirit of nature, Laurell feels right at home in the jungle of the summoners rift, bringing strong advantages and protection to the lanes even when she is not in them herself. Do keep in mind that she is still fairly squishy for a jungler and really needs to plan her use of Spriggans wisely. At the start of the game, it is wise to level up Guardian Spirit first. The passive will give Laurell some sustain in the jungle and the active will allow her to create a nice meat (or bark) shield with which she can tank most camps. Do mind that the passive will only work when the Spriggan has applied Magical Seeds on the target monster!! So let it attack the big monster first before changing it into a Forest Sentinel, since these do not apply the effect. After this you can level either Engrain or Dryad's Shroud for some protection and AoE damage. Leveling Dryad's Shroud first will give you a nice escape for when you get counter-jungled and Engrain might allow for an early gank. From there on it is up to you what ability you level first. As for Spriggan use; ordering a Spriggan to protect and ally in lane will rid you of one valuable helping hand, but will grant that ally a stronger push. Ordering a Spriggan to stand watch at a jungle camp will also rid you of that hand but will grant you vision in that area. Your ultimate is a nice way to help allies aswel. Granting a shield to the champion that needs it most might mean the difference between a won lane and a terribly lost lane.

Support/Lane Laurell: As a support or Mid laner, Laurell must concentrate her Spriggans in other ways. Setting one in the river will allow for some vision and will still leave you two for protection and some extra poke. Do be careful with them however!! Being in lane and thus visible and vulnerable for enemy champion could cost your dear Spriggans their lives!! Additionally, if your lane is going very well, you might be able to win some favor by sending a Spriggan to a different ally in a lane that isn't doing as well as yours...

Lore:

Report on Laurell from "Legendary beings of Valoran." - By Candurill Gellius, schollar and historian at the Royal Acadamy of Demacia.

Nature used to be the core of any culture during the ancient times of Valorans people. Now however, this regard for nature and its bountiful but fragile power has dwindled for the sake of progress (I got a full taste of this when I visited Piltover a few years ago...The number of trees I saw could be counted on one hand). No wonder that one being of folklore has long been lost to history, only popping up here and there as a Guardian Spirit of forests and other natural sites... The first mentioning of this creature comes from statues and carvings in the Kumungu ruins. Not much study has been done here due to the dangerous nature of the jungle, but the features are similar to other accounts of this being. The ancient civilisation of Kumungu seemed to worship her as a goddess of nature, healing and protection. Although this might make her sound like a benevolent goddess, nothing would be further from the truth. Many artworks depict her furiously protecting specific natural sites with lethal force, describing her as a jolly and happy but vengeful creature that nobody should cross. It is unknown what name this ancient civilisation had given their nature spirit but she pops up in multiple places all around Valoran. For example: The Minotaur tribes of the great barrier have a winged nature deity they call "Luraeli", which is a name similar to "Lural", a forest spirit that the Natives of the Voodoo Lands speak of...

When I finally got my chance to meet the Creature herself near the field of justice, she introduced herself as "Laurell" and gave the following account of her life.

"The Fae Folk have magic older, more mysterious and more powerful then any magic known to mortals. The entrances to the Fae lands, also known as Glades, are nestled in remote forests all over Valoran. In these forests, the magic of the Fae seeps into the land, the trees and animals. To make sure these forests stay hidden and are protected from things getting in (and things getting out) a Fae is assigned to protect the forest. I was one of these Fae and had been assigned a Glade to protect many eons ago, located in the vast forest that is now the Kumungu Jungle. It went very well for a time, but I grew restless...I started to interact with the local civilisation, becoming somewhat of a guardian for them. More and more I ventured into the mortal world to see what natural beauty it had to offer and with every journey I lost more and more control over the Glade. After venturing out on one journey that took me 3 whole days in the mortal realm, I came back to find that the glade had been shut and the civilisation that had lived there wiped out of existence... Feeling distraught and guilty, I turned away and ran. To this day I still do not know what exactly happened. After wandering aimlessly for a few days (or weeks...months...years...I do not remember), I came upon a small town, in the middle of a forest. From its inhabitants I heard word of a foreign power slowly nibbling their way through the forest, ever expanding their territory and destroying the local wildlife in the process. I realised something. I could save that forest. With renewed willpower, I fought the mortals back, scaring them away from the forest, never to return again. I had found a new purpose. I might not have been able to protect the Glade and The Kumungu people…but I will protect the nature of this beautiful world before it will disappear entirely under the unstoppable expansion of its foolish mortal populace...At ANY cost..."

Allthough I am going on a limb here by connecting these stories, it is safe to assume that Laurell has been traveling Valoran for many years, bringing natural knowledge, healing and sometimes vengeance upon people of all civilisations (although it is interesting to note that no mention is made of a being like her anywhere near the Shuriman desert...).

(P.S. I always add an imaginary source from which the scholar could have gotten his information with the lore. For Laurell I had wanted to have a mural that would have come from a Kumungu Ruin...If any of you creative people on the forum would be interested in creating such a mural then I'd be forever grateful....I am shit at drawing/painting =_=)

Quotes:

Champion selection:Nature gives, nature takes...Not even I can stop that process....I can help it along though...

Moving:Nature calls!!” “Don’t you love this breeze?” “Natural beauty is all around us.” “The forests are calling, I must go!!” “Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.” "I will protect this field!!"

Attacking:There is no forgiveness in nature.” “Natures wrath!!!” “You can’t violate natures laws!!” “I am a force of nature!!” "I forsook my duty once...Never again will I let that happen!!"

Jokes:Spring is nature's way of saying, 'Let's party!'” “Behind every tree….There is ANOTHER tree!!” “Isn’t it beautiful out he-…yuk I think I stepped in something…” “I thought I was pretty cool…Until I realized that plants eat sun and poop air…How cool is THAT?!

Taunts:Some people are like clouds…when they disappear, it’s a brighter day!!” “Nature provides exceptions to every rule.” (Allied Zyra): "I am pretty sure you are the result of Fae magic running rampant in the jungle...O-M-G We are practically twins!!!" (Enemy Zyra): "I am pretty sure you are the result of Fae magic running rampant in the jungle...Let me rectify my mistake!!" (Allied Maokai): "You are like, LITERALLY, my favorite tree ever!!!" (Enemy Maokai) "You are an abomination and have been allowed to roam Valoran for WAY too long..."

Skin Idea:

Season Harbinger Laurell: Because nature cycles through different seasons in order, it figures that Laurell would have an ultimate skin that would change depending on the season. In the summer months, her color palate will have a lot of green and yellow. In the autumn she will have more reds and browns in her appearance. In winter her form changes into a peerless white gown with crystal wings. Lastly, in spring, she will don a colourful palate of pinks, blue's, purples, reds, yellows...well anything actually...

I'd say the concept is pretty cool, but it would seem to be a little over powered, but that's every champion typically lol. Good champion all and all. You put a lot of thought into this. I put 'Meh' because it think it's a little too strong. But another concept you could add if Zyra is near she gets one extra health :^) because she's a plant.

I think this is fantastic and seems to fit into the trend riot's going for with the release of more mystical champs/champs with mystical abilities. I'd like to know why the inhibitor though, her passive is kinda useless in instances where your team is not losing but also has no active inhibs. All in all though I'd love to see Riot's take on this :) nice job

Cool concept for sure. Out of curiousity, what is her role? I've always liked the idea of a druid champion and this is probably the closest to fulfilling that idea. Interesting concept with the Spriggans.

Well, this is just... I can even... :D I can't really judge lore, because lore is something people create and pour their souls into it, but the kit seems complex as hell. Not that that is bad, but usual champions have pretty simple abilities who could be used in many ways.

~~ ~~

So, let's begin this review:

Passive I want to say it is a little bin unfair? Yes, it is not too strong and may help your lane a little bit, but he is like extra minion every 2nd wave. You just chose a lane and cause it to self-push enemies, destroy towers. I know that in laning faze one extra minion is nearly nothing, but late game in might change entire fight. I mean, you would even require to be in lane to push it. Don't get me wrong. I am not saying that it is OP or bad, but it is little unfair. Then against, 30% of current champions are unfair. I mean, Rengar burst damage, stealth and jumps out of stealth, why anybody would ever thing that this is OK?

Q First thing first. I shouldn't kill epic monster with less than 20% of max health. Secondly, SOW part is clearly for being a support. Place in nearby your tower to help defend it. I see no other uses for it than to defend towers. I is cool to grown trees who helps you to defend stuff, but even at late game all it does is only for defense. I am not sure if you were aiming for that or not, but it have nearly no other uses, unless it grants a lot of vision like a ward. Also, it even more increase chosen lane pushing while everyone is away from it, so it makes your kit late game even more unfair against enemies. Again, not that is very bad, just unfair.

W Not this is the bad one. 500 radius is pretty large area and the fact you can move is also concerning. It is massive field of stealth, which also does 300 (+100% of AP) magic damage over 5 sec to enemies inside and even grants massive boost of movement speed for allied champions. It have too many good things in it. Breakdown:

  1. Massive AOE movable stealth
  2. Pretty high AOE damage
  3. Massive movement speed buff
  4. Doesn't have maximum range you can move it
  5. Can become even more massive while using it on Q I am pretty sure that some of these things should be removed. This is pretty OP and at same time unfair ability. It have too much good stuff for you and too many bad stuff for enemy team. This feels more like ulty, than a normal ability, and even as ulty it would be pretty powerful. Still, this is your concept and you can change stuff or don't, i am just saying what i think.

E Well this is pretty nice one. Decent damage, decent slow, rewarding interaction with Q. Maybe 3 sec AOE root is a bit too much, but other than that, this is pretty solid ability. I could see something like that in the game. Also, this would open more uses for Q SOW. From purely defensive it could be used for offence when placed right. Still, maintaining Tree healthy and not protect it from destruction in the middle of the lane would be pretty hard, if not impossible. Also, you forgot to give this ability range.

R Why can R be upgraded 5 times? Why it is so bad? Well, not bad, but it can be used only in certain situations, it gives almost nothing as an ultimate ability, it gives you stronger minion which still can be wiped out in several attacks by ADC. I just can't see any uses for it, except even more unfair pushing lanes while you are away from it. Why did you think this is good ability? Maybe i messed something, then i am sorry. But as far as i can see:

  1. It gives you a stronger uncontrollable minion.
  2. It have nearly no impact in late game (except extreme pushing).
  3. This stronger minions still can be destroyed by ADC very very fast.

Sorry if i get something wrong, but this is my current review.

Also, for you to not feel sad, there is some calming music for you:

I quite like this, seems tough to balance around though.
