[Champion Concept] Sham'a, The Candle-Maker

Thanks for klicking on my Champion concept :D i did a few others aswell!!! (Chayon, The Shepherd of the Afterlife, Ethea, The Primordial Spirit, Puck, The Fae Adventurer, Librea, The Spirits Conduit and Grettle, Sweetness Incarnate for example) Now im not a novelist and i am no genius with the scalings and such, so if you have tips or comments please leave them here!! Also, if anyone has a gift for drawing, id love to have a drawing or picture made of this champion :D

Name: Sham’a Gender: Male Race: Spirit Birthplace: Shurima

Lore: Shuriman texts speak of a tale of folklore, told by mothers and grandmothers to babes in their arms and little-ones in their beds. It is a tale about light, warmth and kindness… Ofcourse light has always been very important to the Shuriman people. They worshipped the sun and stars. They made fires to cook their meals and scare off wild animals. Grand chandeliers hang in extravagant dining halls and quaint hearths warmed the rooms of every old shack during the cold nights in the desert. It is told that there was once a candle maker and he was the best Shurima had to offer. How he loved his work. Every day he would make candles, big and small, magic or normal, white or blue, for all people that would have them. He didn’t ask much, nothing even if people had nothing to give. He saw it as his noble goal to fill the world with brightly lit candles to warm peoples hearts. A dark being however, had other plans. It wanted to snuff out all light and make peoples hearts cold and dark. Long had he watched the candle maker and reviled his work. And one night, he struck back... Without even the slightest warning, the candle-makers shop went up in flames, so fast that the other people could do nothing but watch as the fire consumed the whole building. Nobody got hurt, other then the kindly candle-maker that had been working there all day…. With tears in their eyes the people mourned the kind man. With sadness and grief, their hearts slowly turned cold. And with no candles to warm them, they became even colder and colder. A year went past until one day a figure was seen rummaging around through the rubble that was left of the house. No man could tell exactly what it was, only that it was not human. It was made out of golden wax, shone with a warming light and created candles, which it left out in the street for anyone to collect them. Slowly but surely, warmth returned to the people's hearts and the days became merrier and merrier. Many a man or woman in the town swore that it was the spirit of the old candle-maker, not content with letting his job of spreading light and warmth alone even after death. From that day on, the would be known as the kindly candle maker, Sham’a.

Whether his heart is made out of gold or wax, it matters not. What maters is that its bigger then anyone has ever seen.” - Thankful woman.

Children's story version: Have you ever heard the story, my dear, about why we light, A little candle, next to our bed, to get us through the night. It al started long ago, in a chilly winter spell With a poor woman, child and husband, that was not very well. While hunting in the forest, the man had been too slow to draw, and in the fight for life that time, he pulled the shortest straw. With fatal wound he would leave the child in the lonely mothers care, For healing they did not have the coin, and hope they did not dare. That night the mother used the last tinder to light a fire To warm the father in his bed, the situation had grown dire. Cold soup there was for mother and child, filled with naught but scraps T’was not tasteful, I dare say, but it filled a mouth perhaps. But then, outside a warm light shone, which at night was mighty rare, And a jolly voice was heard, laughing and humming fair. “Knock knock knock” at the door was heard, the mothers brow was raised She walked over to the door and then outside she gazed. Naught but snow and winter cold, greeted the poorly lass. But behind her, the child s%%%%%%ed about something that came to pass. When she came back, to her surprise, the family had been blessed With candles everywhere, big and small, warming soup at their behest. She looked around for whom had brought this wonder in their midst And saw a light from husbands room, and heard a candle hissed. She ran to the room and saw there, a being pure and white made out of wax and light and warmth with a posture of average height. The creature pulled out a hair from fathers head and used it as a wick And placed it at the fathers bed, lighting it very quick. It then turned towards the mother, smiled, and said with jolly voice “Have no fear for your husband dear, he will live, rejoice!!” “As long as this candle burns next to him and keeps him light and warm” “Nothing on this living earth will do him any harm.” After uttering these final words the spirit disappeared And the woman cried of happiness, her husbands fate was cleared!! An thus, my child, when we go to bed we burn our candles bright, For then, the kindly candle maker, watches over us at night.

Appearance: See the picture (this is not my art and i take no credit for it). He should have less off a dimwitted face but he should have the cuddly trustworthy santa vibe going for him. He’d then be a bit white gold in color with wicks here and there that flicker on and off. I imagined him as a kind of Djinn character. He should also have Shuriman texts etched all over his body and a happy and jolly voice.

When chosen: "There are two ways of spreading light summoner; being the candle or the mirror that reflects it."

Moving:On my way.” “I’ll bring a light.” “Without delay.” “I am needed elsewhere…” "Walking with a friend in the light is better than walking alone in the night." "I enjoy it when the world smiles; the more smiles, the warmer I am."

Attacking:You force my hand!!” “Fireball!!” “Candles don’t JUST warm…” "When you can't make them see the light, make them feel the heat." "It is not light that we need, but fire!"

Joke: Sham'a scratches his head, then breaks out laughing with the punchline. “What burns longer, a red candle or a green candle?...Neither!! They both burn SHORTER!!” "Light a man a fire, he'll be warm for a day...Light a man ON fire, he will be warm for the rest of his life!!!" “I had scented candles in my shop you know…No wonder everyone was so calm that day…

Taunt:You are like a candle in the wind….Completely useless…” "Blowing out someone else’s candle doesn’t make yours shine any brighter." (When Nocturne is in the opposing team) “There are dark shadows on this earth...But the light is stronger.” (When Nocturne is in the allied team) "In order for the light to shine so brightly, the darkness must be present." (When Leona in enemy team) "The sun may rise at dawn...But it also sets in the evening. Thats when people light candles to give them hope. I Pick up where you fall short!!" (When Taric is in game) “Candles are truly outrageous…” (When Diana in enemy team) "Don't tell me the moon is shining; Does broken glass shine when light glints from it?" (When Soraka in enemy team) "The stars may guide you, but the stars aren't always visible. My candles are like little stars that people can take with them...THAT is true guidance." (When Amumu is in game) "Truly, it is in darkness that one finds the light, so when we are in sorrow, then this light is nearest to our heart." (When Azir is in game) "Good to see you again sire...Do you still light a candle every night?" (When Xerath is in game) "Oh my...You were always a tormented child...It is sad to see you ended up like this..." (When Renekton is in game) "Do not seek to strife with your brother!! Follow the light and it will guide you back to sanity!!"

Since Sham'a is a spirit of light and warmth, he is the exact counterpart to Nocturne Nocturne. As such, his candles stay lit and allow vision during Nocturnes ultimate ability. Sham'a will comment on this when Nocturne activates Paranoia by saying: "Look at how a single candle can both defy and define the darkness."

When placing a healing candle: "Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared."

When using Life Light on an ally:How far that little candle throws its beams! So shines a good deed in a dark world.

Gameplay: I imagined Sham'a as a semi tanky mage that would be best as a support champion. The extra damage in his Q and clever usage of his W would allow him to be played on midlane as well.

Passive, Master Candle-maker Vision and stealth wards that Sham’as places have a bigger range. Vision wards also have more health and stealth wards last longer. Sham’a also gains health regeneration (20 + 5% AP per second), armor (15 + 5% AP) and magic resist (15 + 5% AP) when near wards he places.

(Sham'as wards will have a candle holder under them, to set them apart from other wards.)

Auto attack: Sham’a throws balls of fire (and wax if Waxing Force is activated) for a medium ranged attack.

Q, Burning Candles: Mana cost: 50 per candle Cooldown: 25 seconds Active: Sham’a places a candle at a target location that will burn for 3 minutes, granting him vision within a 550 unit radius. Allied champions can absorb its light for 5 / 10 / 15 / 20 / 25 (+10% AP) health per second while standing in a 175 radius to the candle. The timer of the candle will be reduced by 5 seconds for every second a champion heals from it. If an enemy champion comes within a 175 radius of the candle it explodes in a blast of fire and wax, dealing magic damage (75 / 130 / 185 / 240 / 295 + 50% AP) to targets around it. Targets suffering from stacks of wax take extra magic damage (+ 5% / 10% / 15% / 20% / 25% AP), consuming one stack. Sham’a can only have up to 3 candles on the map at one time. Health regeneration does not stack.

(So this ability can be used as a ward and healing station, but as a skillshot aswel, placing it near and enemy to trigger the explosion).

W, Extinguish: Mana cost: 50 Cooldown: 15 seconds Active: Sham’a blows out a flame in his hand in a target direction, dealing magic damage (70 / 115 / 160 / 205 / 250 + 50% AP) in a cone in front of him. Targets suffering from stacks of wax take extra magic damage (+ 5% / 10% / 15% / 20% / 25% AP), consuming one stack. The wax on a target stunned by Waxing Force will explode into a large area around it applying a stack of wax on all targets (allied or enemy) within the blast radius but cancelling the stun. Passive: If the first few units of the damaging cone hit an enemy ward, it is destroyed immediately, returning the mana cost of Extinguish to Sham'a.

E, Waxing Force: Mana cost: 50 mana + 5% of max mana per attack Cooldown: 20 / 19 / 18 / 17 / 16 Toggle: Sham'a covers himself in magic wax, reducing all incoming damage by 5% / 10% / 15% / 20% / 25% for 5 seconds. Additionally, Sham'a can now auto attack both allies and enemies, applying a stack of wax on both of them. A stack of wax on allies reduces all damage from all sources by 5% / 10% / 15% / 20% / 25% for 3 seconds (effect does not stack). Auto attacks on enemies will deal extra magic damage (+ 5% / 7,5% / 10% / 12,5% / 15% AP) and slow them by 5% / 7,5% / 10% / 12,5% / 15%. Every stack of wax slows enemies more with 5% per succesive hit, eventually stunning them for 1 / 1.25 / 1.5 / 1.75 / 2 seconds after 5 stacks (visualised with the target being covered in wax). The stunned champion is then immune for this effect for 5 seconds. Passive: Sham'as other abilities do more damage to targets with stacks of wax, but will consume one stack for it.

R, Life Light: Mana cost: 100 Cooldown: 180 seconds Active: Sham’a places a protective candle near himself or a target ally (This candle is NOT a ward...) with a health of 5 / 6 / 7 hits (candle can also be hit by AoE abilities). The candle will keep the target champion from dying, even when their health drops to 0, until the candle is destroyed or the champion leaves its range. Passive: Sham'a's inner spiritual flame grants him 35%/50%/65% of his AP as bonus health.

(The candle will have the same 3-5 hit system that vision wards have, making it fragile, yet still needing attention before actually breaking. If the Champion leaves the range of the candle while his or her health is 0 they die (duh) but as long as they re there they CAN be healed, making it safe for them to leave the area. The champion is also still targetable for grabs and blasts that displace it).

Eat upvotes, you candle-conceptualising monster!

The lore, while vague and simplistic, has a really nice feel to it - and is excellently written. Captures the personality and theme of the character perfectly, and I really liked the execution. Also poetry. I descend into Dr-Seuss-like poetry sometimes (embarrassing), and totally appreciate it. ;p

The passive is a cool concept. Not much to say beyond that - it's a good base passive, and you've built an interesting champ around it.

Q: Waxing Force is fun, applying and wax stacks to be utilised in different ways. I feel like the stun could be a bit much, though. 2.5 seconds makes for some disgusting chain potential - and is usually reserved for skills like Ashe's arrow from moderately high distances.

W: Burning Candle I like. But Would the player still be able to place wards while these are on the map? If so, I'd consider lowering the vision radius. 7 potential wards - 3 of which are mines - could be potentially match-defining. Not necessarily in the good, balanced, fashion, haha.

E: Extinguish is TRICKY TERRITORY, and, frankly, I wouldn't've even tried. Destroying even invisible wards with ease? Very cool. Vision monopolies? Also cool. But allowing Sham'a to perform both these functions is tricky. It's difficult to even pretend that I can fairly consider the implications of such a combination. IF the range of Extinguish is really really low, then I think I could back the idea guilt-free. But if said range is long enough to, say, cover 1/2 of a lane bush (or more) in one sweep, it would be less of an "I know where this ward is, and I'm taking it away!" tool; and more of an "Wonder if there's a ward here? Pfft, can't hurt. [Gets 30 gold]" Tool. ;p You've given it a fairly high cd, and that's nice. Maybe you could limit the range of extinguishing candles, but maintain the length of the flames for purposes of attacking champions?

This is a unique ability. The good unique. But, like I said, super duper tricky.

R: Life Light is a bit iffy. I LIKE the concept, but the thing about auto-attacking wards is that they're either really easy to take down, or really hard to take down.

It's gonna rock during lane phase, or in 2v2 situations. But as the fights get more chaotic and/or one-sided, this candle's going to become more and more difficult to defend or target. Consider giving it a grace period during which it is untargetable and flares up; then a time limit cap (say, after 10 seconds the candle burns down and goes out).

Another option is linking the candle to those inside its radius, taking damage on behalf of those who would otherwise die. This prevents the enemy from having to focus the candle. The flipside, however, is it puts a dent in those cool 'My entire team was wiped, oh wait - no it wasn't!' moments due to so many of your allies taking damage at once that the candle ceases to function almost straight away.

R, like E, is super tricky. =p

I think this concept has a very unique take on the 'I'mma be a ward-whore!' champ design. Extinguishing and lighting candles, as well as delaying death? Very cool. W through to R all serve their purpose and cement Sham'a as an adc's dream support. This is a good ability set, and any changes you make should focus on thematic and aesthetic features, balancing attempts, or cool twists on the existing design.

The fact that the lore wasn't hard to read is also totally a bonus. item 3165

[Placeholder for my concept, which I totally want you to look at in return]

You asked for my review on The Candle Maker but there is literally nothing more for me to put that has not already been noted by other concept reviewers. It's a unique concept worthy of it's upvotes.I do appreciate you writing two separate lores too, both were really decent in their own ways. My one and only thought was that the first version of your lore may be a little too long. Without a doubt a brilliant setting and storyline, but longer than your typical lore. I could be wrong on that though. Well done though, you have my support +1

TheFirstGokun7/6/2015, 12:52:53 PM2 votes

This is already an amazing concept. There... there's nothing for me to do here. If I had to suggest something, maybe increasing the number of hits to destroy Life Light to 5? Amazing concept, warm and cuddly, loveable in every way with an actually interesting skillset. So good, just... so good...

##Quick and Dirty Review

Overall

I like him. Good back story and lore with the children's story that could be used for the cinematic prior to champion release

Passive

Very nice. A unique amd competitive play on the vision wars. I suggest a visual indicator on his placed wards. Like a candle base.

Q, Waxing Force

AP based champion with a AA buff? I'm happy with the way the skill is. Kayle has a friend now. Also you should state how long the 'stun immunity' last after application, or else it would be broken. Although you are peeking into fighter territory as a role with both a defensive (from passive) and auto attack buff. It is limited to a smaller area of effect, limiting your ability be one. Good to know a support can possibly play another lane I'd the player is skilled enough with the additional damage from the wax stacks..

W, Burning Candles

Good ole champion defining skill. In total, the skill is good as is.

E, Extinguish

I'm confused on this skill with it's interaction on W: Burning Candle. Does it blow it out, detonating the trap? Or is it like a guest of breath as a attack with no interaction? Also, I would make it that every x cast of E, Extinguish makes it so it can destroy a ward with a different, stronger spell visual. Say every third cast (to keep in line with Yasuo, Annie, etc). This promotes good casting off your skills.

R, Life Light:

Now this, this would be very upsetting to play against, but its is simple counter play makes it ok (displacement or aa the candle) to play against. I like the idea of 'keeping life through it's light', which fits very hope thematically amd within gameplay. Wombo that with a heal from the candle amd your team mates will love you. As for changes, change the hit required to destroy scaling to 2 / 3 / 4 or 3 / 4 / 5. Your choice on how strong you want it to be, but that should scale with level, versus only the cooldown scaling being effected per level.

Final Thoughts

You have my upvote and my support. I would go on deviantart.com to find some image that somewhat represents the look your going for in this champion. The image, Minor changes, and any more general description to the concept well being it to life.

Well, I got to admit, at 1st glance I thought, "Candles... and Wax... nahhhh" but dude, this idea is very creative. I really dont see too much to tweek here imo. But since Im on the page I want to point out the top 3 dopest things I noticed about the KIT.

  1. The Passive... DOPE, the fact that a candle/light wielder can utilize wards (which give light/vision) is awesome... the coolest thing is, though im assuming this champ would mostly be in bot lane, he prob could mid too, and still make the passive work by simply upgrading wards.
  2. The W.... DOPE... though Im more of a fan of % Max health back over time rather that flat heals, it's still a great laning tool that could be very useful if you need to hug.
  3. Imma kind of double up, because on Sham'a's E... i like the instant ward kill mechanic... but the Ult takes the cake! What makes the Ult even more "Fair" is that it doesn't really heal you... you kind of have to rely on you natural HP5 to surivive lol. Even though a small HP5 boost wouldnt be bad, but I think what you have so far is fair and balanced.

If your really, REALLY looking for a Con in the idea, the only thing I can see that would pluck my nerves is the 2-stack, 2 second stun every 5 seconds... it's true that you'd constantly be consuming stacks... but if you wanted you could just wait around and keep stunning. So i'd personally take a look at that... im actually eager to see some of your other work...

I changed a few abilities, added a few quotes and polished the lore a little :) If there is anything you'd want to see added to make the champions concept even clearer, do not fear to ask!! :D

Candurill8/2/2015, 5:55:27 PM1 votes

Changed a few effects. Waxing force now stuns for a maximum of 2 seconds in stead of 2.5 seconds. Extinguish now only extinguishes an enemy ward if its at close range, but will also refund the mana cost to Sham'a if he actually hits them.

Candurill8/4/2015, 8:21:37 PM1 votes

Id love some feedback on the theme and the lore aswel :) I think his kit is now as done as it will ever be :P

By the way dawg, I can't comment on your other concepts because their not on this server's forums :(

Snip<

I skipped the lore, sorry :L Maybe I'll read it some time later.

Passive, Master Candle-maker Vision and stealth wards that Sham’as places have a bigger range. Vision wards also have more health and stealth wards last longer. Sham’a also gains movement speed (20 + 5% for every 100 AP), armor (15 + 5% AP) and magic resist (15 + 5% AP) when near wards he places.

(Sham'as wards will have a candle holder under them, to set them apart from other wards.)

Interesting, but not all maps have wards. Maybe make it so that Sham'a also has a bigger sight range? That way he would actually have a passive in dominion or ARAM. But then again... him having a much smaller sight range could also be interesting, and encourage extensive warding a bit more. Maybe I'm just over thinking this.

Q, Waxing Force: Mana cost: 5% of max mana per attack Cooldown: none Toggle Sham’as auto attacks deal extra magic damage (+ 5% / 7,5% / 10% / 12,5% / 15% AP) and apply wax to a target, slowing them more with every successive hit (5% / 7,5% / 10% / 12,5% / 15%), eventually stunning them for 1 / 1.25 / 1.5 / 1.75 / 2 seconds after 5 stacks, visualised with the target being covered in wax. The stunned champion is then immune for this effect for 5 seconds. Passive: Sham'as other abilities do more damage to targets with stacks of wax, but will consume one stack for it.

Seems pretty good but... Why drain 5% of max mana per attack? Wouldn't it be more sensible to drain a flat amount? Because as it stands, buying mana on this guy would provide no real benefit to waxing force. Is that intentional? If so why?

W, Burning Candles: Mana cost: 50 per candle Cooldown: 25 seconds Sham’a places a candle at a target location that will burn for 3 minutes, granting him vision within a 550 unit radius.

I think that it should only explode if Sham'a is nearby, or have some other factor decide whether it explodes. You know... just some way for enemies to destroy it without getting wax in their face.

E, Extinguish: Mana cost: 50 Cooldown: 30 seconds Sham’a blows out a flame in his hand in a target direction, dealing magic damage (70 / 115 / 160 / 205 / 250 + 50% AP) in a cone in front of him. Targets suffering from stacks of wax take extra magic damage (+ 5% / 10% / 15% / 20% / 25% AP), consuming one stack. The wax on a target stunned by Waxing Force will explode into a large area around it for 20% / 25% / 30% / 35% / 40% of the damage taken by the stunned target (thats the normal damage, plus the bonus damage for stacks of wax), applying a stack of wax on all hit enemy champions, but cancelling the stun. If the first few units of the damaging cone hit an enemy ward, it is destroyed immediately, returning the mana cost of Extinguish to Sham'a.

30 seconds is kinda high don't you think? And as for canceling the stun, I think there should be some reason for cancelling it early, so that people don't just blow it out at the very end of the stun. Like maybe it transfers the remaining stun duration to all nearby targets, but removes it from the initial target. That could give some interesting play making options that are still properly telegraphed.

R, Life Light: Mana cost: 100 Cooldown: 180 seconds Sham’a places a protective candle near himself or a target ally (This candle is NOT a ward...) with a health of 5 / 6 / 7 hits (candle can also be hit by AoE abilities). The candle will keep the target champion from dying, even when their health drops to 0, until the candle is destroyed or the champion leaves its range.

Nice. Will the allys health drop into negatives or will just get stuck at 0?

Hi , i started to read your concept and he seems pretty good except the the R W and Q and lets be honest... they are totaly OP the w is a mix of reksai ult + a pretty good healing as well and with his Q i dont see any reason to not buy with him tear be with 3000 mana and spam Q and slow every one and eventually stuning them. and his ult is Zilean ult with 120 seconds and if u think about it its pretty good with 40 % cdr dont you think? the concept is good... change need to be done.

Catastrop7/5/2015, 11:05:13 PM1 votes

This is like the most OP solo mid champion right here, awesome support and could be jungler. However a bit of balancing could be done. That ult is a bit too short on CD and the heal on teleport is a bit too much as well but all in all everything else is really well done.

Candurill7/5/2015, 11:41:02 PM1 votes

Changed a few things, He no longer instantly heals from teleporting to his candles His Q now requires 5% of his max mana to make sure the ability is not spammed to death His ult has now a longer cooldown time

Candurill7/19/2015, 2:59:51 PM1 votes

I changed a few things, did some scaling, added some quotes and added a special interaction with Nocturne. His abilities now consume stacks of wax for more damage but the amount of stacks needed for a stun is now 3. I also made his Shuriman origin more prominent in both his quotes and his lore, since Shurima does not have any full supports yet. What dyou guys think :) ill be adding a drawing of him that a friend of mine is doing in a few days.

Idontsurvive7/19/2015, 4:19:40 PM1 votes

The backstory is amazing and so is the champion idea. I would love to see him in game, caus he actually seems fairly balanced. Would love to see a full ap and tank Sham' a. Just wondering whether 5 hits on his ult candle would be too much, only team comps with lee sin ,alistar or tristana would be able to compete against him, I feel.

Wirelessly7/23/2015, 8:23:54 PM1 votes

Passive: I like this passive, but I feel like more can be done with the "my wards are candles" idea. But definitely a great concept.

Q: This Q is broken. A 1.5-2.5 second stun after 3 auto-attacks is massive, not to mention that it only has a 3 second cooldown per target. If I built Runaan's Hurricane on Sham'a and go support, I would be able to stun 3 people for 2.5 seconds in a team fight, which is massive. For reference, check out Braum's and Kennen's passives. They work in similar ways.

W: I feel like this ability could combine with Sham'a's passive to make his/her/its wards very unique. The idea of a Champion with unique wards is appealing to me, and that seems to be what Sham'a is. The healing is pretty cool, but the fact that it has to sacrifice vision time could be a problem. If I'm a jungler walking around, I would have to go out of my way to avoid these wards because if I walked through them I would waste about 40-60 seconds off of them for healing that I didn't really need. The dashing component seems a little random and feels like it was added just so that Sham'a can have a dash.

E: With an ability called Extinguish, I would like some synergy with his candle-based kit. It's cool that it destroys enemy wards, thus "extinguishing" their vision, but I would also like to see it interact with the rest of his kit (other than just dealing more damage). Maybe an interaction between this ability and a target stunned by his Q? This concept is actually very unique, and I don't use that word lightly.

R: This ability is rather interesting. A AoE Tryndamere ult that can be destroyed. I would like to see more details about this ability, like what happens if I keep damaging a "dead" Champion. Does that Champion receive negative health, or does their health just stay at 0? And as everyone else says, the candle would be very easy to destroy. It has the same health as a stealth ward, which die very fast once they're revealed.

Overall I think that this Champion offers a very unique twist on wards. That's what this Champion has going for it. Good concept Candurill :)
