LORE Long ago, in the desert now known as Shurima, many societies constantly struggled for control of the vast desert. Many came to claim the riches that lay within, but few were able to maintain hold of the desert for long or even at all. One society that came close to not only holding the desert, but also destroying the entire world, was a city known as Icathia. The Icathians were a simple, yet extremely competitive people. They constantly tried to get what they needed without much thought for those around them. Some were not like this, but most eventually came to be such later in life. One man that broke this habit later in life was a man named Kodiak. A long time ago, the city of Icathia found two artifacts of great power known as World Runes. Kodiak was alive at the time and was about to succeed his head officer as leader of the Icathian military. The World Runes were of such great power, but the sorcerers of Icathia came to realize they could be used for much more than just their destructive power. They could open doors to other dimensions and provide their society with all the power and wealth that came from those dimensions. This discovery would be what would bring the city of Icathia to great power before removing them off the face of Runeterra. While experimenting with the World Runes, a portal was opened to a dimension that would come to be known as the Void. At first, a voice whispered to the sorcerers. It told them of the great power that came with the Void. It spoke of the many powers that could be obtained by using the maddening powers within. The sorcerers, not knowing what to do, decided the risk was worth taking and followed the directions given out by this strange voice. In the end, the voice delivered on it's promise. All of the soldiers and sorcerers within Icathia were blessed with the corrupting powers of the Void. Their swords were unmatched in power, even by the mighty ascended beings from Shurima. The sorcerers could corrupt the many who fled from the army into following them on their conquest. It seemed like Icathia was about to control the desert, if not the world, when suddenly all of Icathians forces disappeared. No trace was found of them and all who searched for what could be of them never returned. None knew what happened to the mighty forces of Icathia... except for the survivors of the slaughter that came at the end of the second year of their military campaign. At the end of the second year, the voice from within the portal demanded to speak to the leader of the Icathian army. It spoke with the leader and unknown words were passed between the two powerful forces. However, what happened afterwards was well known by all that were present in the mighty Icathian empire. Creatures... creatures... creatures that seemed to be made for nothing but killing flooded out from the portal. The waves of creatures never stopped. They came by the thousands, if not millions, and consumed everyone in their path. Kodiak, far away from the creatures when they first appeared, was given a message by his best friend, Jax, who was residing within the capital after a rather successful campaign in the desert. The message read:
My brother Kodiak, there isn't much time. The forces that granted us the power to fight have turned against us. Strange creatures have slaughtered the queen and are now making their way through the civilians. They devour them like a man would devour the meat on his plate, except with the fury of an ascended soldier. They came for me now, so I simply tell you this. When they find you, and they will find you, know one thing. Run. Run like your damn life depends on it. You don't know the horrors I have seen. Just run. -The Grandmaster of Arms and Your Bother in Arms, Jax
Jax, one of the other warriors who would be ascending to be a leader of the Icathian army with Kodiak when the previous leader died, was telling Kodiak to run. The greatest warrior of the Icathian army, the unstoppable army, was telling Kodiak to run. Even when Kodiak had the reach advantage with his greatsword, he could never defeat Jax in a duel. Kodiak took the advice and fled the desert. His army ran for days, some of them trying to return to Icathia to save those who had already fallen. Kodiak let them go. Weakness was not allowed within his army. They ran until they were forced to stop from exhaustion, which was saying something for an army empowered by the Void itself. It seemed, however, this empowerment would turn out to be a curse in the end. The creatures of the Void were attracted to Kodiak's army, like a moth to a light. In the night while they were resting, the creatures caught up to them. How exactly was not known, but they had. The army was slaughtered in their sleep. All except for Kodiak, who could not sleep that night in fear of the creatures that Jax had described to him. When the creatures appeared, Kodiak lifted his greatsword, and got to work. Running was useless. He could not spend his life running. There, in that oasis they had stopped to rest at, the slaughtered happened, and not just for Kodiak's army. With strength and the will to survive, Kodiak waded through the sea of creatures that now surrounded him. Creatures that were easily ten times his height were downed in a single slice by the blade that had killed even ascended beings in a single swing. The slaughter lasted all night until there were only two beings left: Kodiak and the largest being he had ever seen. It tore through the sand like shark would the ocean. It's scream could make a man go deaf. It's teeth were razor sharp and easily pierced through Kodiak's armor. However, this fight would not end with a victor. Kodiak, with the last of his energy, broke the back of the creature before the creature subsequently tore a hole in Kodiak's chest. With the creature unable to move and Kodiak bleeding out, the night was filled with the sounds of pain. Kodiak crawled across the desert, only surviving because of the curse that had been granted to his entire army. Eventually, he found his way back to Icathia. Mysteriously, all of the creatures had disappeared save for tiny, disgusting creatures the size of a small bug. Kodiak eventually came across the portal that had unleashed the creatures upon Kodiak's army. The portal promised him one thing: survival. Kodiak did the unthinkable and accepted this offer. Despite everything that this mysterious force had done to Kodiak and everyone he loved, he accepted it's offer. The wound in Kodiak's chest was completely healed, but he found a mark upon his skin that would come to haunt him. The portal closed as Kodiak walked away from the ruins that were once Icathia. He wandered Runeterra for decades upon decades. He found a life of peace away from society, not being accepted anywhere for the war crimes his nation had inflicted upon the desert of Shurima and his purple skin being seen as alien and dangerous by others. Most of all, however, was the mark on his chest. All who came to see it were given visions of madness that angered them and caused them to cast Kodiak out of their homes. This was not the true purpose of the mark however. It's true purpose was discovered when, one day, another being came to speak to the mysterious being that had destroyed all that Kodiak held dearly. Malzahar, a prophet from a small society within Shurima, would eventually come to find the ruins of Icathia and be driven mad from the sight of the Void that lived within. When the portal opened once more and unleashed many beings of destruction upon the world of Runeterra, the mark on Kodiak's chest began to glow before once again fading back to what it was before. What followed revealed the true purpose of the mark on Kodiak's chest. Void portals began to open around Kodiak and that night that happened at the oasis in the desert long ago was replayed. Every night, for the rest of his life, Kodiak would become under the assault of the void creatures who wished to claim the portion of the Void given to him by the mysterious voice. Unable to sleep yet never growing tired, Kodiak began to slaughter the creatures every night, further forcing him to separate himself from society. Every night, it seemed like larger and more powerful creatures came to try and devour him. Realizing this, Kodiak traveled to the new city of Piltover during the day and requested the most powerful army an inventor could provide him. It took many weeks for the armor to be made, but eventually one of the first artifacts of Hextech engineering was made. A suit that could protect Kodiak even from the many creatures within the Void. While in Piltover, however, he heard rumors of another purple skinned man who was roaming the planet as well, supposedly seeking a good fight. A voice within Kodiak made him know who this was: Jax. With a goal beyond simple survival finally presented before Kodiak, he went to search for Jax, hoping that together they could find a way to end the curse that was placed upon Kodiak once and for all.

NICHE AND ROLE I think it's quite clear what Kodiak's niche in the game is: anti-groups. Anyone who makes a ton of units is going to get wrecked by Kodiak and is his ultimate and passive. However, Kodiak himself spawns units for him to trigger his AoE benefits, so he isn't useless against teams which don't group up/spawn a ton of units. A swarm of voidlings will spawn for him to make use of every minute on the mark, so Kodiak has clear windows of power that both teams can plan around by looking at the game clock. Half of Kodiak's complexity comes from his passive, so learning how to deal with and make use of each Void creature is important when playing as Kodiak. Kill all of them for the extra gold? Train them into an enemy so that they will be forced to attack them and therefore aggro them? Lead them into an allied tower just to trash them? It's up to you. Just be sure to RIP AND TEAR your enemies to pieces.
