Tessik, the Raving Thunderbolt

- Tessa "Tessik" Ikaen, the Raving Thunderbolt -

The first champion I ever created, revamped and somewhat returned to her roots. If you're interested in older versions of her, just search Tessik on this forum or the old one.

Tessik is a speedy melee-ranged AP assassin, all about high mobility and keeping on your toes. With the highest base movement speed of any champion in the League currently, as well as a repertoire of flashy and lightning-fast spells, Tessik's moves are sure to amaze both allies and enemies alike.

So, Summoner, can you keep up with the Raving Thunderbolt of Piltover?

  • To Do List 1: Find some sort of eye-catching picture to attach to this thread. 2: Hand out some more reviews to other champions. 3: Still need to give her interaction quotes with Corki.

  • Table of Contents 1: Aesthetics 2: Skins 3: Lore 4: Gameplay 5: Quotes 6: Animation Concepts / Descriptions 7: Credits

  • Aesthetics

Body Structure: Tessik is a tall woman with a modest build. Respectably curved, especially around the hips. Though most who see her agree that her legs are her defining feature.

Hair: Tessik's hair extends down to a little past her shoulders, fanning slightly outwards as it goes down. It sports a neon/electric-blue coloration, but turns white as it descends, creating a gradient effect. Most likely dyed, but nobody knows for sure.

Eyes: Tessik's eyes are a rather vibrant shade of green, and definitely one of her more noticeable features when people aren't admiring the rest of her. May or may not actually be green contact lenses.

  • Skins

Default Skin: For her default skin, Tessik wears form-fitting dance attire, colored to match her hair. Her wrists and ankles each have a sort of glowing brace floating around them, slightly detached from her body via hexvoltage technology.

Enforcer Tessik: For this skin, Tessik wears a battlesuit similar in general design to Vi's, but noticeably less bulky and with more emphasis on her legs than her fists. It has a more refined and sleek structure, befitting Tessik's greater emphasis on her personal appearance.

  • Lore

"Life's just one big party, and everyone's invited!" - Tessik

In the city of Piltover, the hub of hextech and center of innovation in Valoran, brilliance can be found in many places, some more unlikely than others. But perhaps no place is more unlikely than in the mind of Tessa Ikaen. Or as she calls herself on the dance scene, Tessik the Raving Thunderbolt.

By day, Tessa is a savant in the field of hexvoltage. This recently-forayed field of hextech utilizes magnetic and kinetic energies as power sources to fuel human motion, by converting said energies into forms the human body could utilize. In layman's terms, a basic hexvoltage accessory can allow a human to move about at less expenditure to their own personal stamina by drawing energy from outside sources.

By night, however, she parties on as the Raving Thunderbolt of Piltover. Equipped with her own custom-designed hexvolt braces, Tessik's movements on the dance floor are unmatched.

Between her skill as a dancer and her notoriety as a hexvoltage developer, Tessik had come to enjoy being in the eyes of the people. Her energetic and amiable personality and sheer beauty made her extremely popular with nearly everybody who knew or knew of her. But more than that, Tessik enjoyed the fact that the things she did made people happy. Her hexvoltage tech could make their lives easier one day, and her dancing could put their hearts at ease.

In addition to her fun-loving night life, Tessik also wasn't adverse to getting her hands dirty in combating the criminals whose antics are the cause of much trouble for the people of her home. Of these many dastardly characters, Tessik held particular contempt for one. A wild and energetic spark like herself whose purpose in life seemed to be to sow chaos wherever she went.

Together with the police force of Piltover, particularly the fiery and spirited Vi, Tessik began devoting more of her time towards surveillance and crime prevention. Such meager measures would no doubt not be enough to deter someone like Jinx, but then again, would Tessik and Vi want it any other way?

  • Gameplay

Primary Role: Assassin Secondary Role: Fighter

Main Stats: Ability Power, Attack Speed

Health: 561 (+84) [1989] Health Regen: 7.9 (+0.6) [18.1] Mana: 334 (+68) [1490] Mana Regen: 6 (+0.8) [19.6] Range: 125 Attack Damage: 59.5 (+3.5) [119] Attack Speed: 0.665 (+3.2%) [+54.4% - 1.027] Armor: 23 (+2.9) [72.3] Magic Resist: 32.1 (+1.25) [53.4] Movement Speed: 360

Passive: Rave On!

Tessik generates Rave charges as she damages enemy units using her attacks or abilities. Basic attacks generate 5 Rave on-hit, while abilities generate varying amounts. At 100 charges, activating an ability will enhance Tessik's next basic attack within 3 seconds, consuming the charges once she attacks or the passive times out.

This enhanced basic attack, when performed against an enemy unit within a certain range, will cause Tessik to quickly leap within range of her target and strike on arrival. This range scales with ranks in Tessik's ultimate, Storm Rave.

Range: 325 + ( 25 x Storm Rave Rank)

  • Rave On! has a visual indicator in the form of a yellow ring around Tessik's feet that gradually forms as she builds charges. The ring glows brighter once an ability has triggered the active component, and a second, more faded range indicator appears to show the enhanced attack's maximum range.
  • The leap is treated as a low-range dash, akin to Vayne's Tumble. Distance permitting, Tessik can pass through terrain using it.
  • The enhanced basic attack is performed and expended even if Tessik manually moves into range of her target first, in which case she'll just attack normally without leaping.

Q: Aerovolt

Range: 1200 Cost: 50 / 55 / 60 / 65 / 70 Mana Cooldown: 7 / 6.5 / 6 / 5.5 / 5

Active: Tessik performs a crescent kick that emits an arc of lightning in a line, dealing magic damage to the first enemy it strikes and generating 10 Rave charges.

The farther Aerovolt travels before striking an enemy, the less damage it will deal, but the more Rave it generates. For every 125 range the projectile travels, the damage decreases by 5% and the Rave generated increases by 5. This effect caps at 1000 range, whereupon Aerovolt will deal 40% reduced damage and generate 50 Rave.

Projectile Speed: 1800

Minimum Magic Damage: 42 / 66 / 90 / 114 / 138 (+36% AP) Maximum Magic Damage: 70 / 110 / 150 / 190 / 230 (+60% AP)

W: Power Surge

Cost: 40 Mana Cooldown: 6

Passive: Tessik gains bonus Attack Speed as long as she has 50 or more Rave.

Active: Tessik's next basic attack becomes two swift kicks back-to-back at maximum speed. Each of the two kicks deals physical damage equal to 60% of Tessik's total Attack Damage plus bonus magic damage. The physical damage from the twin kicks will apply on-hit effects, while the magic damage will apply spell effects.

Passive Bonus Attack Speed: 30 / 35 / 40 / 45 / 50%

Active Magic Damage per Kick: 15 / 30 / 45 / 60 / 75 (+20% AP) Active Total Magic Damage: 30 / 60 / 90 / 120 / 150 (+40% AP)

  • The two kicks are executed as if Tessik's Attack Speed were maximized at 2.5, like Jayce's Hyper Charge.

E: Thunderclap

Range: 325 Cost: 55 / 60 / 65 / 70 / 75 Mana Cooldown: 8 / 7 / 6 / 5 / 4

Active: Tessik performs a spinning kick, releasing a shockwave all around her. Enemies within range are dealt magic damage and Tessik generates 5 Rave per enemy damaged, doubled against enemy champions.

Magic Damage: 40 / 70 / 100 / 130 / 160 (+40% AP)

R: Storm Rave

Cost: 20+ Mana Cooldown: 7

Passive: Tessik's leap range for Rave On! is increased.

Toggle: Tessik launches into a frenetic rave, surging with power. During this time, her basic attacks generate double Rave and reduce her ability cooldowns on-hit.

The mana cost to sustain Storm Rave increases every second.

Rave On! Range Increase: 25 / 50 / 75

Mana Cost Increase per Second: 3 / 4 / 5 Cooldown Reduction per Attack: 0.5 / 0.75 / 1 Second(s)

Not bad, I like the pun with the whole rave thing, even though I quite dislike the music (Sorry, I'm a Metalian).

However, the kit seems to be overall good, but there is something that troubles me.

Her E's base damage is kind of too high for an AoE. Maybe decrease a little, but add bonus damage the more Rave she has - it'll deal then the same damage.

You might want to correct on Thunderclap's description "Rave generation". I think you mean regeneration, or?

This is all I have to say. I'm sorry, i'm not really good at it. The damage scales are quite right, but Thunderclap is a bit too strong right now.

Reaper Review12/8/2014, 11:20:06 PM1 votes

Yeah, the base stats were copied over from an older draft, back before the S5 stat changes. I think the biggest difference is in the Health and Mana, and their respective Regen rates.

I'll probably have a look at the new numbers on Kassadin/Fizz and use them as a reference point to make sure everything's scaled correctly. Tessik's should be roughly in the same ballpark as theirs, being a melee AP assassin.

Reaper Review12/8/2014, 11:42:31 PM1 votes

Tweaked the base stats and accounted for the new system. They're rough estimates at the moment, but I think they're pretty close to what this type of champion would have.

Began working on the animation details again, posted what I have so far. Some of them probably aren't final, but it's a start.

Hi :) as promised, here are a few of my thoughts kit-wise:

Passive:

I really like this passive, as it offers a quick jump of mobility and helps counter kiting from your assassin targets. My concerns come from the wording. What exactly are we looking at in terms of leaping into "range?" Does it simply mean jumping closer to the target (distance similar to Ahri ultimate)? I imagine you mean it gets her into auto-attack range? If so, it's good to go.

Q:

Though really similar to Vi, I actually think it fits as you want an AoE for best use of the passive. Imagine this on a minion wave! You'd be jumping around like Yasuo. I think a more unique way to accomplish goals here would be to implement a similar idea to Volibear's ultimate. Have it spread to all units in a radius but not jump from secondary targets to tertiary etc... (so essentially one chain of bolts from original target to all in range).

W:

Love the interplay with the passive here, but I think no Active really hurts this ability because it doesn't engage the player. As it stands now, though, the ability is well-tuned. My suggestion is giving an active perhaps while the shield is on cooldown. Something that offers a choice making the player think, "Do I rush another defensive shield or utilize the active?"

E:

Again, nothing much to add here besides perhaps a concern on the range. 900 Units might be a bit too hefty here since it persists.

R:

Perfect... Love, love, love what you did here. This champ utilizes a passive in a very refreshing way.

Amazing champ you have here, it seems really fun, and I hope the community lightens up a bit.

SpiceIsRight12/10/2014, 4:53:41 AM1 votes

I really appreciate the explanation on Q and now see why you went that route. Yes! I think that the W toggle idea is a great idea. Let me know if you switch it and alter the ultimate!

Reaper Review12/10/2014, 8:35:16 AM1 votes

I'm mulling over exactly what I want her ultimate to do. The hard part right now is trying not to make it just a rehash of Yi's ult, but conceptually speaking Tessik wants to do something similar...

Kamiroo Wolf12/11/2014, 12:59:04 AM1 votes

Glad to see Tessik finally make her way over to the boards. Still in love with her as a person :3

Reaper Review12/11/2014, 1:15:40 AM1 votes

Oh, hey, they changed the appearance of the quote boxes. They look a lot nicer now.

I'm reviewing my old drafts right now, seeing if I can think of unique ways to utilize the Voltage marks.

Tessik's skills should apply the charges from a range, since her passive lets her close the distance against marked enemies... but then what? She has to be able to do something once she's there.

As a dancer, her movements need to be fluid and evasive. Something that made her temporarily untargetable would be flavorful, but giving that to an assassin never ends well. Fizz

Maybe lower her skill ranges a bit, make her more of a mid-range fighter. Something like Ryze-tier ranges. A stance system similar to Udyr's might be a possibility too, where each of her skills has a persistent after-effect. And there's no rule against an assassin being able to duke it out if need be, like Nocturne and Rengar.

Elphrihaim, once again saving the day and forcing me to read his username so I actually spell it correctly.

For real, though, I don't think it's just Tessik. A lot of champion threads seem to suddenly get a bunch of downvotes for no discernible reason every so often. I'm assuming it's just trolls since it seldom happens in threads about skins or reworks.

I just noticed it more immediately with Tessik because she literally hasn't been above +1 ever since I posted her.

Of course, if people actually DO take issue with something about her, I'd appreciate if they'd say so. That way I can actually try to correct that problem instead of just blindly changing everything trying to find a compromise.

It isn't. Whenever a Champion Concept gets to the Boards' main page, it tends to get a bunch of downvotes because apparently people hate it.

I just noticed it more immediately with Tessik because she literally hasn't been above +1 ever since I posted her.

;-; (hug)

[though I gotta be honest, the only reason I have so many accounts is because my ISP keeps giving up on me and I don't want them on my real account; and so that I can play with low-level friends (it happens more often than one would think).

Also the fact that I have an EUNE account that I couldn't log into and an a different one that despite being level 6 the Boards think is level 4. >_> I could have brought this from -1 to +6 if all my things were working, but alas they are not, so settle for 5 ups.]

Reaper Review12/13/2014, 4:22:18 AM1 votes

Her kit's been tweaked rather heavily. Some new mechanics are in place, including an ultimate that doesn't sound like much on paper, but can have some pretty messy results if used right.

Tessik's kit now has a full theme to it. Get into her target's face and stay there, kicking them into submission. She can close the distance to her target very easily, and do good damage once there, but has no built-in defenses besides a channel interrupt. She also has no long-range gap closers, relying on her high innate speed tagging abilities to keep the fight up.

Reaper Review12/15/2014, 1:11:54 AM1 votes

I don't have any more changes to make at the moment, unless anyone else can think of something. I've done about all I can do myself.

Reaper Review12/16/2014, 9:28:22 AM1 votes

I should get some kind of image to attach to this thread. It might be a bit more of an eye-catcher then, but I have no artistic skill.

I'm thinking maybe Tessik needs a small defensive steroid somewhere, like the short-duration damage reduction Kat has on one of her skills. Maybe a healing effect on W as long as Tessik is within discharge range of her target, with reduced healing from minions or monsters of course. Nothing major, just a little something.

Elph, I've been meaning to ask if you use any kind of messenger, since I'd be interested in discussing ideas with you. Seems like a lot of the people I used to work with have disappeared since the forum shift, among other things.

As for Tessik, I'm considering trying to write a gameplay synopsis, but I'm not sure how to do that. Both because I'm not that good a League player myself, and because I'm actually bad at playing assassins.

Reaper Review12/19/2014, 4:03:50 AM1 votes

Some small changes.

  • Moved the scaling on Rave On!'s range from being per-level to per rank in Storm Rave.
  • Made Aerovolt's damage/Rave scaling more dynamic.
  • Power Surge is now a slightly different sort of AA modifier.

Tessik may not be the hardest hitter, but she'll hit you fast. Very fast if you're not careful around her.

Reaper Review12/20/2014, 8:07:47 AM1 votes

This is probably the last time I'll bump this. I don't see much use in continuing to design Tessik from this angle when there are better dancer concepts floating around, and I don't want to feel like I'm just ripping them off.

Maybe I'll re-design her as something else entirely. Tessik was originally a sort of mad scientist type when I first created her way back when, so maybe I can find some new inspiration there.

Pollyanna Wright12/24/2014, 7:16:59 PM1 votes

Ok so I need more clarification on what your goal with her is... I'm seeing her being as a ramp up fighter but that doesn't feel right to me.

Reaper Review12/24/2014, 8:54:15 PM1 votes

She's in a bit of a weird spot right now, I think.

Tessik's theme is agility, but I tried to convey it in a way that doesn't abuse long-ranged dashes or blinks. Instead, she has high base MS and a mini-gapcloser on her passive.

If anything, she's like a squishier Diana, or an AP spin-off of Yi. Tessik's kit is designed with the feel of an assassin in mind, but emphasizing AS rather than outright burst.

I think she wants an actual ultimate, with her current ult's mechanics put somewhere else in her kit proper. It's tough to figure out exactly HOW to tweak her, though, because I haven't gotten much actual input on her.

DrugsForRobots12/25/2014, 10:17:15 AM1 votes

Forward: This is intended to be constructive criticism. Don't be discouraged! :D

I feel like you've got some good concepts and design choices here, but some issues as well.

I'm actually quite fond of the character archetype of the Dancer. League has a singer and instrumentalist in the form of Karthus and Sona, respectively. The Dancer design space is there to explore and will be explored at some point I imagine.

Thematically, the idea of having her be a raving and break-dancing dancer is brilliant imho. Most other Dancer concepts I've seen on the forums take her the route of a spiritual, Ionian/Shurima-esque, ritual style dancer in terms of flavor. Having her be from Piltover is a interesting interpretation. I especially like how her legs are her weapons which is something we haven't seen in the League so far, as well as her most striking feature.

I like that she's AP, and agile. I'm not a huge fan of your "Rave" resource, but I like the idea of her getting progressively more hyped/energetic - would be a neat thing to work with. The quotes are wonderful and hint at a personality somewhere between Jayce's confidence, Jinx's excitable nature, and Vi's punk girl attitude.

I find the inclusion of lightning/electricity ("hexvoltage") in her theme to be a little odd, but not entirely alien. It makes sense with Piltover being the most technologically advance place in Valoran. It also goes well with the various forms of EDM she grooves to, and plays on her lightning speed.

But considering that we currently have champions with the titles: "The Thunder's Roar", "The Storm's Fury", and "The Heart of the Tempest" and soon "The Storm Dragon" I don't know if League needs another lightning elemental themed champ. What I'm getting at is that all of these champs dip into the same thunder/lightning/electricity design space with their abilities, excluding Janna. To that end, I feel Tessik's title, "The Raving Thunderbolt" needs some revising. Word choice is important. :p

Regarding her kit, I'm not entirely sold on her abilities, though I like the name "Aerovolt" oddly. Everything about a particular champion kit is subject to change so I feel it isn't necessary to harp on her abilities but I will add that they feel more like a fighter's kicks than a dancer's acrobatics. I like how you want to emphasize her agility without giving her a bunch of dashes though.

TL;DR - 6/10, C+/B-, (Average/Above Average) Pros: Her legs being her 'defining feature' as well as weapon is brilliant. Having her be a raving b-girl is great flavor. Lots of good quotes to work with. Cons: Iffy on the 'Rave' resource. Not sure if she should be an 'electric type'. Current skills iteration feels more like fighter kicks as apposed to dancing moves.

PS: I can see DJ Sona appearing in her background splash art. PSS: Since legs have longer reach than arms, would it be out of the question to make her AA range be 150 or even 175?

Fertsa12/8/2014, 11:10:55 PM1 votes

Nowadays at level 18 you've gained 1700% of your growth stat, which is more than before. Yet you have your level 18 stats printed as the base+1800% of the stat. The real hp at level 18 for this champ is 1864.

the more you know

So, if you ant to keep the level 18 stat and the base the same, the growth needs to be amped to 90. or (stat@18-base)/17=new growth

Reaper Review12/26/2014, 3:06:58 AM1 votes

Woo, something I can work with. Let's see what we've got. I'll use bullets and comment on bits at a time.

  • I notice, reading Orianna's lore, that something similar to what I've described for Tessik's lore already exists. The connection between Orianna and her ball uses a heavily electricity-based form of techmaturgy. And also that Orianna Reveck, before she died, had a talent for dancing as well. I'm thinking it may be possible to connect her and Tessik somehow in their backstories, so I might rewrite the beginning of the lore to incorporate that.

  • Tessik has had the title of Raving Thunderbolt for some time now, but I'm wondering if something with a bit more kick is possible... I'll have to give that some thought.

  • I was originally going to make Rave her actual resource in lieu of Mana, but I wasn't sure I wanted to make a manaless AP assassin. We already have Akali and Kat romping all over solo-queue, after all. In its original form, Rave was built up via movement and attacking, like Statikk Shiv charges, and Tessik's skills would consume certain amounts for empowered effects ala Renekton's Fury.

  • Her E is just an AoE attack, really. Every assassin has some sort of AoE component in their kit, and Tessik's is most readily comparable to those of, again, Akali and Kat. The original incarnation of this ability was almost exactly the same as Rek'Sai's Q, so I had to change it and didn't know what else to run with in the meantime.

  • Adding in to making her moves feel more like dancing and not just raw fighter combat, that's something I do need to tweak. Some sort of multi-hitting technique might be good to have here somewhere. Got a lot to think about, in both lore and kit to revise.

  • When I do those revisions, she'll gain some form of survivability as well.

  • Tessik is still only human, so I left her AA range at 125. Things like Pantheon's spear are what push into the 150 range, and I don't realistically see Tessik's legs out-reaching a spear. (Also, Fizz's AA range is 175 for some reason, despite him presumably being much smaller than Pantheon. Also worth noting that Trundle has 125 AA range despite the size of his club. The only melee champion who isn't wielding a weapon or being augmented somehow, and has higher than 125 AA range, is Rek'Sai, who is clearly a gargantuan of a creature.)
