Are we playing the same game?

Yasuo

Terakali2 votes

Technically speaking, he's a Ronin.

TheLastShadow454 votes

Ronin are Samurai, though they had not master. But they are still samurai.

Terakali2 votes

You are not a samurai if you don't have a master. That's what makes ronin a meaningful term.

Warlord Dienekes2 votes

Technically, Terakali is right here. The word samurai itself means something like "servant." To be a samurai you had to serve in some official capacity. At least, in theory. Practice it was a bit more fluid where service to your daimyo ended and where just being a well equipped raider began.

If they ever abandoned their service, or if they lost their lands, or were dismissed they were technically no longer samurai. If we're using the terms as they were originally intended.

But usually, us modern folk just use samurai to mean any vaguely medieval to early modern Japanese warrior guy. When technically the correct blanket term for all of them was "bushi."

I agree: Technically tomato is a fruit, but you still don't put it into a fruit salad.

Technically Yasuo is "only" a Ronin, but he still represents the archetypical slashing and dashing katana wielder, who people would think of when hearing Samurai.

Wouldn't the technically correct samurai wield a longbow and ride a horse though? You seem like the type of person to know that.

That's why they included that last paragraph:

How does that answer my question about real Samurais wielding bows and riding horses? [sg-lux-2]

Edit: changed previous post for better clarity

They also had an assorted types of sword and polearms and various other weaponary outside of the stereotypical katana or bow&arrow/yumi (the dominant weapons of choice were polearms and bow&arrows). By the 16th century, Japanese warriors and samurai alike also used guns and cannons. Remember, samurai is ultimately a status symbol, not a specific combat style.

Then again, as the other guy has said, we're just using the term to refer to warrior archetypes of Japanese swordsmen rather than its other technical details.

That's part of why I added that last few sentences. Most folks conflate the two, which makes everyone knows what people are saying when they want a samurai or ronin.

In any case, yeah, bow cavalrymen are usually considered the focus of a samurai. It wasn't the only focus. For example, the samurai of Takeda Shingen mostly used a spear and acted more like shock cavalry than the "usual" cavalry archers. A samurai could realistically have any of the following as their "primary" weapon: guns, bows, straight spears, curved spears, mauls, and clubs. If they were going to a duel, you can add swords and daggers to that as well.

Personally, I do think Yasuo fits the samurai theme enough. Though it'd be cool to have a skin of him in actual samurai armor. Better than that stupid oversized shoulder thing he has going on.

Well, Garen and Darius would like a word with you regarding their shoulder plates.

Big shoulder plates has been a design stable in western media on fantasy settings for quite some time, like Japanese's liking for energy attacks and katana I suppose, and I guess it's not going anywhere soon. But I guess more variety could be cool.

Warlord Dienekes1 votes

This assumes I haven't also thought Garen and Darius look stupid.

I believe last time they were brought up, I pointed out that the thickness should crush Garen's spine. He looks like he walked out of Warcraft, and I don't think that's a good thing.

Actually, Riot does know that, that's why Garen literally has the quote "I've got a lot of weight on my shoulder" as his joke (or taunt, but should be joke).

He looks like he walked out of Warcraft, and I don't think that's a good thing.

I grew up with Warcraft, so extreme shoulder plates that doesn't affect me as much. And I generally am not that specific regarding the realism of a design as long as its consistent with itself and its premise. But I can see why it can trigger some people.

Warlord Dienekes1 votes

You see I grew up looking up armor. So it looks really weird to me.

Though triggered is a bit much. I think they look dumb. But I don’t just spend my games looking at Garen’s design cursing his creators. Mostly I just ignore it, but if the actual design is brought up for whatever reason, yeah, I’ll comment I think they look bad.

Unlike Yasuo, who is a samurai (assuming we only refer to the generic sense to refer to Japanese warriors), Yi is actually not one, because he's based on the Chinese warriors/swordsmen and not Japanese (and with some techno going on with his goggles).

Yi does have a samurai skin, though.

EDIT: Whoever downvoted me, I hope you don't confuse between Greek Hoplites and Roman Legionnaires too. Yi and Yasuo are based on different warrior archetypes, not a hard concept to understand.

Lol that was a typo on my part. Also someone is saying that he is a Ronin not a samurai. an Yasuo seems more like a wandering swordsman rather than a samurai.

No, we don't need a samurai champion. Please do not turn this game into one of those Japanese-Chinese RPG game clichés.... There are already too many oriental-themed champions and skins. I know Riot's got their own reasons for such a theme, but please, do not turn it into a cliché. I'd rather see a ** Swiss native yodler singer ** champion than another samurai/ninja/ronin/etc themed champion.

Most of our entire roster are cliches, or at least had a it as a starting point (which is a common way of design called 'archetyping'), I find it puzzling that you only take issues with the Eastern ones.

Warlord Dienekes1 votes

In fairness. We still don’t have any proper knight. We have Garen who is just... no. And Mordekaiser who’s more the evil overlord archetype.

But we do have 4 ninjas. That’s a lot of ninjas. We do have a Chinese soldier. But our Spartan is apparently going to be changed into not a Spartan when he gets updated.

The general design philosophy seems to be, if it’s Asian you don’t have to change it at all (Wukong, Xin Zhao, Ahri, the ninjas) but if it’s European it has to have some weird other bullshit added onto them.

Personally. I have no problem with a samurai. But I also want a Swiss Pikeman, an actual knight, a Winged Hussar, maybe a Janissary.

I think a Yi rework would do fine.

Maybe move his meditate to his passive and give him a Genji style projectile deflect.

Fix some things about his ult and alpha strike in order to give him more weight to his attacks.
