New Normals|Ranked|1v1|2v2|MAP

Now that Treeline is finally gone, I would love to see a Brand new map that allows players to Normals or Ranked 1v1| 2v2 |(No bans). This map is for players who want to test their individual skill with their champion (micro), and cut out the macro from the traditional 5v5 map. To me it just makes sense to have a 1v1| 2v2 map. I would also love this game mode to allow the option to jump right into the next match right after the game ends like fortnites READY UP feature. This feature would be for someone just trying to 1v1 with their main or 2v2 with a certain comp, adding this feature would just make sense as far as saving time is concerned. Also in this game mode, "I lost because of my team" is an excuse that can't be used. Players will be forced to accept they lost, and will be more likely to focus on the things they did wrong and improve.

Just to be clear, this is ONE MAP, One Single Lane, with the option to play 1v1 or 2v2. For example, Summoners Rift gives the option to play Blind Pick, Draft Pick, Ranked Solo/Duo, and Ranked Flex. This map gives the option to play 1v1 Normals, 1v1 Ranked, 2v2 Normals, 2v2 Ranked. Champ select works like Blind Pick, meaning mirror match-ups are possible.

1v1 For players who just want to fight against one opponent (and not have to worry about a jungler or other lanes ganking) and just focus on micro vs micro would love this.

2v2 I imagine those who have a duo partner or a friend would love this map, just 2 buddies taking on the competition, and again this is a game mode that focuses on micro vs micro.

I also had a few ideas for those who love to limit test but its a stretch, but I like it because it encourages flexibility.

Idea 1: Allow this game mode to let people choose to 1v2 or 2v1.

Idea 2: Create a random option that allows players to go up against any elo in norms. Elo reveals pop up after the victor is decided. (Reveals show players 5v5 Solo/Duo Rank, 5v5 Flex Rank, 1v1 Rank, 2v2 Rank) "Holy SH*T, Im Bronze and just beat a Challenger One Trick"

Idea 3 : For those who have a 1v1|2v2 opponent in mind and want to bet a ranked game against that person, a match can be set by invite.| (jungle and mid repeat ganked my lane that's why you won)| Great for those who like to hit people up after losing a game wanting a meaningful 1v1|2v2 to redeem themselves. (I imagine people trying to abuse this feature for ranked gains so... maybe have a one game per month limit on it vs the same person)

Idea 4: Being that this game mode is skill based, it reminds me of fortnite, and how fortnite has Cash Prizes for its top competitors. This gives their player base incentive to actually try and be good at the game, and also potentially change lives by placing top 10 in big tournaments like Bugha winning 3 million dollars. I could see 1v1|2v2 ranked being turned into something like that.

A Ranked 1v1 Mode (Nexus) similar to how Hi-Rez implemented (Duels) in Smite would be fantastic honestly.

Oh true? I've never actually payed attention to SMITE so I wouldn't know. But you like the idea?

Yeah, I play both games and the 1v1 mode is actually really fun.

Imagine the 2v2, Yasuo/Malphite vs Kayn/Aatrox. or Yi/Lulu vs Taric/Trynda

I imagine the duo combination would get pretty wild lol

The scariest thing is Kayn/Aatrox. Boi the more you hit them the more they heal the more they kill you

True lol, so do you like the idea of it tho? How do you feel about my idea 1,2,and 3?

yes lets not put bans in a ranked mode so if theres a particularly broken champ free elo :D

JL KS1 votes

1v1 and 2v2 shouldn't have bans, its about micro mechs with your champion, every champion is fair game for both sides. They can pick the same champions you can. There are no excuses for losing other than your opponent just being better at there champion then you are at yours. Now, if you go into a 1v1 ranked game picking soraka every match that's your own fault.. so, I guess there is alittle bit of macro involved lol. :D

This is one that was explored a few times, both through 1v1s at the pro level as showcases and in a few of Riot's old experiments. Unfortunately, League champions aren't really designed for 1v1 or 2v2 modes, so what this ends up doing is creating a game mode that much of the playerbase isn't able to play well -- and also splitting up the player pools, which means worse match quality for everyone.

It might make a fun rotating game mode, but it probably lacks the mass appeal to be a full game mode.

I think that with the incentive of cash prizes being introduced, all the issues they had could be overcome, I also don't see how champ select becomes an issue when everyone has access to the same champions. I also don't understand how you say champions aren't designed for 1v1's and 2v2's when legit every game we play involves 1v1s mid and top, and 2v2's bot. Please explain. I see 1v1|2v2| working if we over come the what ifs and lingering fear of failure, because right now, I see a league of legends going down hill every year because they are afraid to mess up, then they mess up and just quit. They start removing things instead of learning from past mistakes and improving upon them. Fortnite is booming because fortnite is evolving and allowing the player base to have a say so and huge creative freedom, adding new aspects to the game everyday. Where as league, resticts creativity, Fortnite creative you can have up to like 16 friends in their creative mode just having fun, creating new maps and publishing them so the world can use your map ect. League's creative mode "The Practice Tool, only allows you to be inside the map, so its kind of boring, you can't develope a map and add new features its just like ok? We have no real room for sharing creativity in hopes of having it implemented other then this website, And I'll get comments here basically telling me on all of my creative work and on many other posts I see, "Riot will never take this idea, or Riot doesn't look at posts, or you are wasting your time, and a comment telling me that player creativity is dying because people are finally starting to understand that to RIOT, their ideas means nothing, because they have people they pay to be creative. I also see a lot of, "this would never work because riot tried it in the past and it didn't work" which is the most cringe thing someone who enjoys being creative can hear. I'm actually afraid of this being true so I come here dishing out ideas to try to keep it alive, but something tells me I'll learn the hard way as well... I'll learn that it truly means nothing to be a normal everyday player and have a creative idea. I know I just went on a rant or w.e so sorry, I would just really love to see a 1v1|2v2 ranked|norms turn into something like Fortnites Cash Cup.

I also don't understand how fortnite can have 250 million players, with 100 being on one map at a time, with the map having soo much more to it then leagues map. League having 111 million players, have a small map that has up to 10 players play on. Right?, but have issues with server space? Like, how come fortnite that has a much bigger load to handle then league being that its a crossplatform game, have room for a billion different maps ect have no problem handling server space, But league with way less load to handle, that is only played on pc, have server space issues? Maybe you know why...?

I also don't see how champ select becomes an issue when everyone has access to the same champions

One of the interesting things about rotating game modes is that Riot found that those that effectively restricted players to specific champions had much less appeal. People want to play their mains, and if you're a Soraka main a 1v1 map is truly awful when you're up against people who main solo-capable opponents. Solo-lane Soraka does fuck-all against most top laners and mid laners, for example.

I also don't understand how you say champions aren't designed for 1v1's and 2v2's when legit every game we play involves 1v1s mid and top, and 2v2's bot. Please explain.

Many champions are at disadvantages in 1v1s or 2v2 situations, and are picked for the value they bring to Summoner's Rift in 5v5 situations. Vayne and Kog'Maw have weak laning phases, for example, but are picked for their late-game power. Kassadin's early game is abysmal, but his powerful late game and great mobility make up for it.

In short, champions are designed with a variety of strengths and power curves for a full 5v5 game in Summoner's Rift. Reducing that to a 1v1 experience hugely impacts the viable champions.

because right now, I see a league of legends going down hill every year because they are afraid to mess up, then they mess up and just quit.

This is a personal opinion, certainly, but League's playerbase is doing just fine.

They start removing things instead of learning from past mistakes and improving upon them.

One of the reasons they removed things is that they DID learn from the past and, ultimate, a mode that isn't healthy and doesn't have a playerbase isn't necessarily worth the cost of trying to save. Business decisions do need to factor in.

I also see a lot of, "this would never work because riot tried it in the past and it didn't work" which is the most cringe thing someone who enjoys being creative can hear.

As someone who enjoys being creative, I disagree. This statement is, to me, two things -- it's partly a challenge (why didn't it work, and can I work around those issues?) and a learning experience about the design space I'm being creative in. Creativity in an existing space isn't boundless -- that's just poor design. Instead you often need to be creative within the restrictions of your design space, and push outside of it when and where you can.

I also don't understand how fortnite can have 250 million players, with 100 being on one map at a time, with the map having soo much more to it then leagues map. League having 111 million players, have a small map that has up to 10 players play on. Right?, but have issues with server space?

League doesn't have server space issues, really. You can always add more server space. The problem is multifaceted though:

  • New features have to earn their cost.
  • Every new mode added shrinks the player pools of existing modes, which reduces match quality.
  • Every new mode requires balance teams to maintain, which either means champions may not be balanced across all modes OR champions may need to be different on different modes.

Riot has opted for a model that focuses on a primary game experience to preserve the health of that experience. Other companies do different things. It's worth noting that Fortnite is also much easier to balance than League, as every character is, ultimately, the same. If one weapon is overpowered, everyone can try to get it equally. This means that it's much less dangerous to try crazy weird things, because the balance ramifications of a single change don't have the potential to throw off as much.

Ok, so that all made sense. Your work in designing has taught you about the restrictions, from my stand point, and my experience being pretty much zero, I have design ideas like pretty much any other person with a brain, I just have unrestricted creations and concepts and never thought of there being this restricted design space you speak of. That seems like it could limit creativity, but I do get what you mean now. From a business standpoint you can't just do w.e you want because everything you do has consequences. I've been think about all of this the wrong way.

Not necessarily the wrong way -- it's a common thing when you approach design. The ability to pick the right ideas for a design space is what separates a designer from an idea guy though. We're all gamers, and gamers have all sorts of ideas -- some good, some bad, some cool, some impractical. A designer's job is to be able to look at a design space (whether a goal, an existing game, a system, etc.) and figure out both what to do and how to do it in a way that supports the overall product or goal.

As a silly example, I could design a whole RPG-style stat system to sit over top a game of chess, and you could argue it would add depth to the game. But, at that point, am I really doing what's in the best interest of chess, or am I doing something that sounds fun just because I can? Designing for League is similar -- you could make a character who plays like a first-person-shooter, or one with a skill tree like Diablo. Those are theoretically possible. But should you? No, because those aren't in line with League's design philosophies, and they bend the existing design space too far without good reason.

Teemo/Cassiopeia. She doesn't need to land a Q to get the poison bonus damage, just needs teemo to auto them

Greenlightx1 votes

the problem with this is that all strategy and macro gets thrown out of the window, which is a huge part of this game, also would make some champions absolute, soraka cant win many 1 vs 1 for example, when I want to play 1 vs 1, I open my favorite fighting game like MK11 or Tekken, league is a moba

Riot won't actually implement this because "It would take up too much server space".

Hong Kong Annie1 votes

Unfortunately after Riot's last attempt at the mode I doubt they will try again. They practically said as much here. Players didn't like the mode so they canned the whole project. Although in my opinion the reason people didn't like it is because it was on HA, a bad map for the mode with its lopsided bush and central choke point that lead to some degenerate playstyles.

JL KS1 votes

Ok, So they basically said, the map was the issue and players didnt like it, and that they had unforseen complications which is understandable being that it was the first time implementing a 1v1|2v2 map. My thoughts on the matter, ok you lost the first game, try again, and again, and again. They want it to work, they want to bring it back eventually, but in order for that to happen, fear of failure has to be overcome. I sensed a lot of fear in that article... they were tiptoeing and poking, they weren't all in. Sometimes going all in is how you reach the outcome you desire. Have faith...

yes the map should look similar to smite with jungle on the side of the central lane :)
