Sacrificial champion idea

I have more thoughts about a champion concept, in both lore and gameplay areas, but there is one specific component I wish to see the communities response too.

The champion would have abilities that would cause him to take damage instead of an ally, in order to save their life; an action which of course comes with the risk of the champion dying them-self. Disregard for the moment what those abilities would be, how they'd work or if the following premise would be from the champs passive or one of the abilities. (Actually you could say if you think it should be the passive, an ability-passive-component, or part of the ult.)

What I want input on: If the champions actions to save their ally caused them to die, they would get kill-credit for their own death, and the enemy that killed them would only get an assist. As it currently stands in my mind this would come with all the mechanics of killing another champion. They would collect their own bounty, both their death and kill count would go up (the enemies assist count goes up), etc.

Again, I'm only asking for thoughts/opinions about the one specific concept. You can formulate your own ideas of what else the champion would actually do, if you need to.

You mean Soraka right?

No. Soraka's healing with her own health is a similar idea though, But she can't kill herself. Plus she doesn't take damage for you, she's healing damage you took. My concept, as stated, is for a champion that saves you in a fight by preventing you from being hurt in the form of getting hurt in your place. Soraka heals you some time after you get hurt, which could be after the fight.

Think of Bond of stone, except not for tanks, and with death allowed.

It wouldn't really work to have a champion dedicated to sacrificing his life, since it wouldn't really be possible to make a champ like that viable. I mean seriously, a champion that does nothing but save another champion. The only way for this to work would be for them to both have stupidly small respawn times and give his team a benefit when he dies, since making him an actual remotely powerful champion would make it not worth it to die in basically all situations, unless you have a particularily fed champion on your team, but in that case this champ would be absolute cancer to play against. It's probably possible but it'd require some amazing creativity to make a champ like this viable without taking away its identity.

Perhaps kill credit could go to the champion saved, while my champ and the enemy get assists.

That way my champs team gets more gold from his death, with a non sacrificial champ getting the extra gold for kill credit and any bounty held.

In my imagination, both my champion and the enemy would die, with my champ getting kill credit for the enemy, but as stated im only asking about the sacrifice mechanism itself.
