Why can't we see the votes on a poll without voting ourselves?
I don't understand why. Is there a design reason or maybe a social engineering one?

So you don't get suckered into voting for the majority. When given a choice involving other people's opinions, we often either support or oppose opinions based on the votes already displayed. If a guy is a rotten tomato he may vote against his best interest just to be in the minority as well. It's psychological, and does affect voting habits, as it has been proven in countless studies.
