There is a problem with how voting works on the boards:

Players downvote things without reading them, or they try to get their comments ahead of others by voting down others' questions in threads like Meddler's Gameplay Thoughts.

In the past I have experienced this and it was frustrating. lately I've seen some really good questions by other people in the gameplay thoughts thread which have been downvoted once and don't get the attention they deserve because they don't show up near the top of the "best" list anymore.

Does anybody else think this is a problem?

You can vote for or against the solutions below:

Allow a poster to disable voting (or even just downvoting) on the comments in their thread.
Hide votes for a period of time (MordeCaiser's idea posted just the other day)
Require comments for downvotes

Obviously requiring comments to vote wouldn't stop the problem. But it would force downvote faries to identify themselves and maybe allow mods to deal with them appropriately.

I voted options 2+3. While i like option 1 in theory i could see it being used to publish spam without allowing for the community to self moderate through down votes. And couldnt they just make +1 -1 posts marked as spam if its not already.

I'm not sure I understand your meaning, do you mean for posts or for comments? Because I am talking about comments.

I certainly don't intend for the community's self-moderation to be taken away. I'm just hoping for a little better protection for people who just want to have quality discussions.

I believe that posts already force you to edit your existing comment if you try to post another comment too soon afterwards.

If someone were to spam comments I would assume that they could just be banned like any other toxic behavior.

I thought you meant posts and comments. Im sorry for the misunderstanding. But what i mean is i can still make a comment that in way adds to the discussion or is entirely off topic then disable votes or downvotes so the community cannot downvote my comment. And thats why i didnt vote for option 1.

Do you think it might work if the community could still report such "frozen" comments to allow moderators to deal with it?

My first impressions of that potential problem are this: If a player did that with their own post I'd just downvote the post, or report the comment. If a player did it to someone else's post I'd report the comment.

Not sure if my idea is a solution enough to the problem though, it might put too much load on moderators to review more reported comments.

If the coomunity can still report then yes i believe option 1 will work. I believe its a good idea in theory i just believed the original post has potentional for trolling and not its intended purpose.
