Can we make up/downvotes meaningful?

Like, everybody gets 3 per hour. Maybe less. There are so many people downvoting just to troll (be it general trolling, or stalking another player) it's not even funny anymore.

Realistic example there's a topic with a poll: 140 votes for the topic, 20 against it. But the topic only has 30 thumbs up (making it low priority in the hot section)

This is a perfect example of people not even bothering with the topic, but simply downvoting because of the creator / headline, without actually judging the post.

As long as up / downvotes work like this they are no meaningful representation, just a mere tool for trolls.

Please reduce the number of up / downvotes a player can make per hour so they can actually be used as something meaningful.

If that happened I would vote on next to nothing. Simply because I'd go, "Well, this thread's not bad, but what if I see one that REALLY needs an upvote, then I may not have any if I keep voting on things!" so I'd really rather that not be the case.

It's interesting how our opinions differ. In my mind, this is actually an example of votes being either too powerful or something the community doesn't particularly value as a feedback tool in general. I find that in every poll I have ever created (yes, anecdotal), there is significantly more activity on the poll than on the vote at the top of the page. I have two theories for why this might be:

  1. People don't want to influence a thread's visibility directly by voting on the OP
  2. People feel they have more expression and less pressure in a poll rather than direct voting

Please reduce the number of up / downvotes a player can make per hour so they can actually be used as something meaningful.

To me, this would just feel like being stifled. I want to be able to vote on whatever I feel comfortable voting on, I don't want an arbitrary restriction stopping me from showing my opinions.
