I've never pressed the "don't show me this again" option on autofill because despite how long it's been permanently activated, I've always thought there would come a time that it would be turned back to the way it should be (only activated when queues need it) and I wanted to make sure I had the warning at that time when I queued for a ranked game and really did not want to be filled (i.e. would rather not queue if it was on).

It's been what, almost a year that this thing has been permanently activated?

Riot, please just tell us - is this ever going away? Are you ever going to make autofill a "sometimes" instead of an "always". It was meant for off-peak hours and for elos without many players. Why is a person with high gold mmr playing on evenings and weekends getting autofill activated every game? Even if I don't actually get filled every game (quite rarely to be honest), why is it always activated? Should I just check the option and be done with it?

There's this little badge right above the "Join Queue" button that shows you whether or not Autofill is activated. As for your question of "permanently activated", it has been repeatedly stated that filling or playing support for any matchmade PvP game (doesn't even have to be ranked) will protect you from autofill guaranteed for 2-3 games.

It does show you right under your banner. The autofill algorithm has gotten much better the bast few months. Supports still an unpopular role.
