I don't think they are being racist, i think they are in a bubble and don't try to break out of it as much as they should, in general, almost every human champion could be black and it wouldn't really change them, so there is no reason not to go ahead and better represent a large part of their player base,

People create what they know, and if you are a white dude you will tend to create white dudes unless you think the theme works better with a specific race, So you kind of have to make a point of actively reminding your self not to do that,

I use the following system, each time i create an idea, i ask myself these questions,

1: Is this character's race/gender important to them in anyway? If Yes all others can be skipped because it would harm the character to make a change,

2: If No to 1, does this character's race and or gender match a majority of existing character's? If yes then change and move on to 3,

3: If it is not important does this character's race or Gender cause any stereotypes? if yes make adjustments, Example i would have reversed Nid's Gender so instead of the common hot female native we instead got a far less common Male nubile savage, the mere act of a minority male being sexually aggressive like Nid is a major deviation from the norm,

With this system you yield a diverse cast without harming them and make sure to avoid unfortunate implications,

Well said. Characters shouldn't just be considered white by default. Of course there are some characters where it makes sense, Freljord folks for example , but there's no reason not to mix it up more often. and is a great start. Those characters easily could have been white (or any other race for that matter) , so changing it up is a net positive because we get more diversity. Hopefully we can get an even broader representation in the future!

I'm not actually 100% sure "arbitrarily assign race" is a good idea (though I appreciate where it comes from and have considered it myself - ultimately I don't create enough to need a system of my own), but dude!Nidalee could've been fucking awesome.

Irelia, Lee Sin, Xin, Akali, Zed (maybe), and Yi don't count?

Because when you play League in Spanish, everyone is Spanish. When you play League in German, everyone is from Germany. Country-specific champions are completely redundant in a game where no matter what country you're playing in, the champions speak your language. You are the perfect example of a player from the US who assumes every white champion is American because.... you naturally tunnel onto your own country and assume everyone who a) looks vaguely like you and b) shares your language also shares your nationality.

But that applies to everyone. To a British person, Lux is not American. She's British. To an Italian person Katarina is Italian, not American. I mean, she speaks Italian on their client - how would she be anything other than Italian? Etc. There's literally no reason to have champions representing countries because every player on the planet assumes someone who fits the description of people from their country of residence belongs to it - as an Irish person I have no need for an Irish champion because ... I can relate to all of the league's champions who share my skin colour and speak my language. They all share enough classic traits of being Irish to be relatable for me.

It's different for people of different colour - that's why champions like Lucian, Karma, Ekko and the Ionians as a whole are amazing. A Chinese person can't just think "Lux is Chinese" even if she speaks their language on their client - her facial structure and even hair colour are clearly western. But they can recognise Xin Zhao as Chinese and that means they have someone to relate to, and that's great. It's similar for black people - no matter what anyone says, people get treated differently in the US (and around the world) based on skin colour and that different treatment usually isn't positive. So minorities like to stick to their own because at least they know people who can understand their problems. Lucian and Ekko give this to black youth and in 2015 America that's a wonderful thing.

It can be difficult to understand the minority POV when as a white American you instantly relate to pretty much everyone (if nothing sets you apart from the mainstream then you relate to everyone). But you have to try and understand other people - when you have traits in you that are different from the mainstream it is really nice to have role models who share those traits. And Lucian, Ekko and the Asian champs give all of that to those who need it.
