My Journey to Make Mordekaiser OP

Stephenizgod·2/1/2015, 4:08:45 AM·2 votes·652 views

As the title suggest i will be playing exclusively Mordekaiser, mostly in Top lane if i can. My goal is to make Mordekaiser seem incredibly OP, if i can do that then maybe he will become a priority target for a rework. Im sure some of you are saying "But Stephenizgod Mordekaiser is already OP", well he may seem that way but he is just oppressive and there is a difference, allow me to explain.

OP is when there is nothing you can do against a champion, they are overtuned or their kit doesn't fall in line with other balance philosophies. Mordekaiser is not OP, there is plenty you can do against him, Morde is Oppressive during laning phase. Meaning he is a lane bully, he has a spammable easy to hit spell that both pokes and farms at the same time. Other then staying out of range and building MR there is not much you can do about it. Why isnt this OP? Because it causes him to push the lane, very fast, since he has absolutely no CC or Mobility he is highly highly susceptible to ganks. A few good ganks and Morde is out for the count, not a problem for the rest of the game.

This doesnt mean he is easy to beat though, you do need to play smart against him unless you can just stomp all over him. Currently i like Mordekaisers design and concept, but his kit is toxic for both him and his opponent. I want Mordekaiser to keep his identity, specifically his ult, when they rework him so i am also going to be showing how he is viable against certain match-ups.

So here is how it will work, i will be posting some of my games with Mordekaiser starting from the start of the month, i will also be giving a small description on how went and how i feel my Morde impacted the game. These games are games that specifically show Mordes strengths or weaknesses, not my own skill at the game haha just my skill with him in general. I'm not trying to hide the games i do bad in, in fact most of these games i lost, im trying to show games where Mordekaisers kit and how it is used is what effected my game. I encourage you to check out some of my other games if you want, but just know that there is a reason why i am not showing some of the games here. (I will not be showing any games as Support or Jungle Morde, these are not good examples of his skills whether i succeeded or not)

First Game: http://matchhistory.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-details/NA1/1686559238/206176227?tab=overview.
17/4/8 Mordekaiser vs 3/12/5 Riven. Top Lane. This game was against a Riven Top and honestly there isnt much Riven can do against Morde. He is a better bully then she is except at level one where she beats him in an all in. The rest of the game Morde just stomps, Lee's ganks would mostly end in a double kill for me. This is what happens when you dont play smart against Morde, he becomes unstoppable.

Second Game: http://matchhistory.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-details/NA1/1687631263/206176227?tab=overview.
5/9/7 Mordekaiser vs 10/12/9 Ahri. Mid Lane. Mid Mordekaiser against Ahri is not a good match-up for Mordekaiser normally. Ahri is very mobile and strong, with no CC or Mobility, Morde has no way to catch or escape her. Basically if it wasn't for my friend as his main Talon, this game would have ended with me way into the negatives.

Third Game: http://matchhistory.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-details/NA1/1690015045/206176227?tab=overview.
6/9/13 Mordekaiser vs 8/9/15 Kayle. Top Lane. This game is a bit different then the others, i did fine against Kayle but they played it very safe. They let me push naturally and called for Xin ganks often, when Xin couldn't gank they would poke and harass me making sure my Passive couldn't shield me against their E. Kayle's Ult is also a great counter to Mordes ult when used correctly.

Fourth Game: http://matchhistory.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-details/NA1/1690745273/206176227?tab=overview.
5/5/10 Mordekaiser vs 9/11/2 Fiora. Top Lane. Another game against an opponent who called for ganks often against me. Fiora doesn't do so well against Mordekaiser during laning phase, this Fiora played it smart by calling for ganks and roaming, but my Ult can still kill her in her Ult so there wasnt much Fiora could do against me. I ended this game even because of Lee Sin mostly, he ganked pretty often.

Fifth Game: http://matchhistory.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-details/NA1/1694499594/206176227?tab=overview.
10/8/9 Mordekaiser vs 8/7/10 Ezreal. Mid Lane. This game against Ezreal is a good example of how i used Mordekaiser late-game when behind. I was getting utterly destroyed in laning phase and through most of mid game. So instead of running forward into the front line i stayed back and would ult certain individuals and wait for my team to kill them, then use the ghost to fight instead of being there myself. Eventually i racked up a good amount of kills doing this and became an actual threat to their team. Normally this doesn't happen but it is because of great teamwork with my team and me using Morde's ult pretty well. Morde may get shut down easily, but if you just completely disregard him he might come back.

Sixth Game: http://matchhistory.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-details/NA1/1697022473/206176227?tab=overview.
7/17/14 Mordekaiser vs 20/13/11 Fizz. Mid Lane Just so you cant say im only posting matches where i did reasonably well. I got destroyed by a Fizz, the funny thing is Morde is suppose to counter Fizz. This particular game the enemy Xin ganked non-stop and got Fizz through the weak early laning phase against me, it got to the point where Fizz would clear minions then ult me, dash in, kill me and hop out all under turret and within 3 seconds. My team wasnt too happy and me and Yi had absolutely no synergy or teamwork between us.

Seventh Game: http://matchhistory.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-details/NA1/1711546282/206176227?tab=overview.
9/9/15 Mordekaiser vs 11/10/14 Azir. Mid Lane. Azir vs Morde, not a good fight for Morde. His poke and range made it impossible to get near him and he had complete dominance over the lane. At level 6 i actually did pretty well against him but he just happened to have Barrier which made my ult fairly useless since i couldnt ignite. It wasn't a good game for anyone on our team, but i still used well placed Morde ults and caught several people out ending up an even 9/9.

Eighth Game: http://matchhistory.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-details/NA1/1713426669/206176227?tab=overview.
5/4/6 Mordekaiser vs 1/5/3 Yi. Top Lane. This is the first game where i started trying a new build of buying Hextech Revolver then rushing Rylais. It worked very well against Yi, the only reason i didn't kill him more is because our bot lane Support Azir was intentionally feeding Rek'Sai (yes he was saying it all game non-stop how he wasnt trying and he didnt care) and she kept getting in the way haha. Yi has no way of beating Mordekaiser, most of the time he would be forced into using his ult to run away so my ult couldnt kill him haha.

Ninth Game: http://matchhistory.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-details/NA1/1713741137/206176227?tab=overview.
9/6/7 Mordekaiser vs 5/9/2 Wukong. Top Lane. I was against a Wukong this game, early game Morde's harass proves to be too much for Wu to handle. He tried to play it smart but he just couldn't out damage me. I played it pretty smart in how hard i pushed and kept the jungle fairly warded so i didnt get successfully ganked too often. Basically Mordekaiser does very well against Wukong early game and if Wu cant pick it up then he will just continue to be stomped.

Tenth Game: http://matchhistory.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-details/NA1/1713769058/206176227?tab=overview.
3/5/0 Mordekaiser vs 8/2/5 Rek'Sai. Top Lane. Originally wasnt going to post this one, not because i lost, but because i lost do to outside interference with my team. At level one me i out damaged Rek, but the burrowed life regain was keeping him in lane. Around level 6 i could out duel him thanks to the lifesteal+spellvamp on my ult. Unfortunately my team was giving Rek kills and their lanes kept roaming up top and diving me under turret, wasnt much i could do and we ended up losing :(

Eleventh Game: http://matchhistory.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-details/NA1/1714430206/206176227?tab=overview.
12/4/14 Mordekaiser vs 4/6/5 Nasus. Top Lane. Hard to count this one. This game i wont count my laning phase against Nasus, because for whatever reason he build Armor against me lol. Early game Morde can poke Nasus out of lane so he cant farm his Q, thats about as far as i can go because of the Armor ordeal haha. Kha'Zix tried to gank but i played smart and would kite him, hit him with an E, run, turn around hit him with an E, and repeat. This kept my shield up as well as deal massive damage, after awhile i just turned around and ult ignited then used his ghost to kill a turret. I roamed bottom a lot and helped shut down Tristana, then tried to shut down LeBlanc but thanks to her mobility she would usually escape. I will say her passive means almost nothing against Mordes E, so that is kind of hilarious when she tries to run. Im pretty sure Morde is a good counter to Nasus, but its hard to tell after that game.

Twelfth Game: http://matchhistory.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-details/NA1/1715775067/206176227?tab=overview.
3/2/4 Mordekaiser vs 1/4/1 Rumble and 2/7/2 Nidalee. Started Top Lane then switched to Mid Lane.
So this game started out annoying for me, Rumble's no cool downs made it impossible to keep my shield up during his harass, and i couldn't out harass him. So after he killed me i decided to switch with my friend who was Zed and went up against Nidalee for the rest of the game. I could out-poke Nidalee and whenever she went in to kill me with cougar form i would punish her bad, she was left with chucking spears the whole laning phase. I didnt get much kills out of either of them, most of my kills come in during teamfights. Not much to talk about mechanics-wise but Morde does decently well against Nidalee and not so well against Rumble apparently.

Thirteenth Game: http://matchhistory.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-details/NA1/1715795943/206176227?tab=overview.**
14/13/8 Mordekaiser vs 15/12/7 Fizz. Top Lane.
So this game started out with me doing very well against Fizz, there was one point in the beginning where i underestimated Fizz' burst damage and he ended up killing me, but for the most part i won lane. He did however roam more successfully then i did, i tried but nothing really came out of it. Im disappointed we lost this game, the entire game came down to whether i could get the right Ghost or not. Vayne got incredibly fed early in the game and just steamrolled everyone. There was one teamfight where i killed Lee Sin used his ghost to kill Yasuo, then kited Vayne (since i had Rylais it was easy) walked into a bush then when she rolled into it thinking i was running i unleashed hell on her haha, unfortunately the Sona got away and Fizz jumped over Red wall and landed on my face killing me. It was quite unfortunate that our Cass wasn't so good with Cass, they didnt know how to trade with her in Teamfights and rarely hit a meaningful Ult, if at all.

Fourteenth Game: http://matchhistory.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-details/NA1/1715835024/206176227?tab=overview.**
3/9/19 Mordekaiser vs 4/10/15 Vladimir and 14/15/10 Katarina. Top Lane.
So this is an interesting one for several reasons. So originally i was against Vladimir but since there was absolutely nothing he could do against me he switched lanes with Kat. I pushed harder, i hit harder, i sustained harder, and i warded very well so no ganks for him. I didn't kill him even though i got really close several times, he played it super ultra safe never trading far from his turret so it was difficult to kill him. I took his turret and then he switched with Katarina. We traded twice then we both went all in and i ended up killing her barely (she almost got me). The thing about it was i traded better, meaning i hit harder and thanks to my shield i nullified most of her damage, but her all in with her ult deals crazy high damage... so yea she almost 100 to 0 me but i killed her at the last second. If i had been laning against her i feel that i could have won, simply because my E does more damage then her Q, and i would have rushed a Visage or Abyssal after getting Revolver. In the end Katarina and very fed Graves just steamrolled us and there was not much i could do, i was usually Katarina's focus for whatever reason and she would end up killing me before i could do anything. So we lost :( and my score was terrible.

So i will keep posting games here, if you enjoy this for whatever reason then make sure to keep checking back in every once in awhile to see how i do :). Feel free to post your own games with Morde and tell me what happened, what you did right, what you did wrong. Maybe i can learn something from you :)

He's my main, so I will gladly share my games :D

As you can see, Nidalee didn't kill me once during the game. My only death was from me being too cocky inside their base, and then getting stuck without my flash to get out. Nidalee would auto-attack me constantly early game, forcing me to farm with my E from afar. Once I hit 3, I could safely farm inside the minion wave, and then E nidalee if she would get close. Eventually, I waited for her to use her heal, then I used E + Ult + ignite while she was close to her turret. She went into cougar form right away, and thought she was safe. Luckily, my ult was able to kill her a few seconds later. Later on, Nocturne, Lucian, and Fiora were a joke. They all tried to fight me near their nexus, but being able to counter melee champs AND being very fed let me kill 2 of them, and the other one ran away. Nidalee's spears were hurting badly late game, mainly because I was trying to go a little glass cannon Mordekaiser like I normally do. I didn't build any MR, so I stayed away from Nid. I waited for her to get close to me. I wasn't the only cause for our victory though, our Tristana and Lee sin did very well.

EDIT: OP, check out my match history :) I play Mordekaiser a lot, so I can give you tips too. I go mid morde by the way, I prefer it. He's too vulnerable to ganks in top. I even made a guide on him, but DFG is gone now, so I need to update it.
