Do i have this correct, if i raise my mmr in preseason i will be placed against higher mmr teams?

if yes that means the lower mmr the better chances of having easier preliminaries.

Your placement will be based on your mmr, not your win-loss ratio in your preliminaries.

So yes, lowering your mmr will give you easier matches, but it will also make you get placed in a lower division. The same way losing in the regular season will get you to face easier opponents, but you'll also be demoted.

In contrast, raising your mmr now will result in harder preliminary matches, but will also get you placed higher next season.

To be completely obvious, let's say you're silver 1 right now. If you go in to preliminaries and go 6-4 and you get placed on silver 1. Or you can drop to bronze 1 mmr now, go 9-1 in preliminaries, then get placed in silver 4 or 5. Or you can improve to gold 3 now and go 3-7 in preliminaries and get placed in gold 5.

In summary, you're always going to be best off increasing your mmr.
