Attitudes toward nonstandard picks is hilarious.

I pick Karthus top and the enemy picks Riven. Team is like "Karth into Riven lol have fun". I get a double kill first blood against Riven/Amumu with the help of my jungler and everyone takes back their comments from champ select. I use the double kill to zone riven and get a lead in lane. At this point no one is upset about the pick because I win lane. The game transitions to the teamfight, rotate objective phase.

At this point we lose because their teamfight is much better than ours and it magically becomes my fault. I was useless because I had no damage (top damage on the team), "I should have dodged with the troll top pick", team had no tank and that was my fault even though I was first pick and on and on. It doesn't matter how well you do as an offmeta pick. If your team loses it is completely your fault.

Let me tell you........ I was playing some unranked draft the other day and let everyone know i'd like to play adc. Someone says don't ban blitz, i'm gonna play him. I tell everyone i have a mega awesome pick that works great with blitz but it's a little unusual so don't freak out. they pick Ashe so i'm thinking "HELL YES! No mobility! One blitz hook and she's done for" I proceed to lock inYasuo (seriously if you have a duo buddy go play Blitzcrank Yasuo it is the most fun you'll ever have in bot lane) our Tryndamere :GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG GGGGGGGGGGG GGGGGGGGGGGGGGG FF AT 20 YASUO ISN'T AN ADC our "jungler" then locks in Tristana and tell me i HAVE to go mid because i'm trolling and yasuo bot is a stupid pick this forced the person who was going to play blitz (aka the whole reason i picked yasuo) to go Nunu summoner 11

The entire champ select our Tryndamere was spamming "GG"

Meanwhile i'm trying to explain to Tristana Tryndamere that i've done this before and came out of laning phase with 5+ kills, yasuo can farm without getting poked out because of his passive shield, windwall, and zone that blitz creates. Even pre-6, one hook is a death sentence because Yasuo can dash off minions so they can't escape. Also, once their adc is hooked you can toss windwall between the supp and adc so that the supp can't throw anything to help their adc escape.

It was like trying to talk to a wall. Oh well. Hopefully i come across them in the bot lane someday and they can taste the wrath of Blitzcrank Yasuo

I played a game where someone jungled with Katarina and I was like "Wow cool I can dig it" and then she spent the entire match saying "SEE? KAT JUNGLE WORKS" after every kill and I'm like "Gurl I get it" and she's like "KAT JUNGLE" and I'm like "gurl."

qetzel9/25/2015, 10:26:21 AM8 votes

Nah.

Although... What were the teamcomps? I'm having difficulty thinking of a team with a bad teamfight that has Karthus.

"Brand jungle wtf? Troll report" the last 2 guys in queue just pick troll champs because they dont want brand jungle and someone dodges

;-;

Xakinos9/25/2015, 6:36:12 PM7 votes

People rage hard at my Kayle support. Then Vaynes be like OMG I CARRIED THIS SO HARD!!! And I'm thinking well yes it's much easier to carry when you're invincible during the assassin/APC's burst, you had the best single target heal in the game during laning, your targets armor is shredded 40%, and their ms is cut in half.

EasterGoose9/26/2015, 3:05:21 PM4 votes

Please. I picked AD graves jungle for a normals game, and three members of my team then decided to steal all my camps, run mid to dive enemy tower for an enemy triple, then afk. Only one who didn't was my friend. Probably the worst reaction I've heard of to an unorthodox pick.

I played AP shaco top once into riven. Same thing happened to me. People were like "lol this kid copying voyboy" i've never even seen him lol. Anyway, i do fine, i allahu akbar with my clone for like 900 damage lategame. I throw daggers, which they try to run from, so they get hit in the back for 20% more damage, i wait for them to dive me in my ring of jack in the boxes, and i stealth flash away with q when shit gets bad. But my team wanted to group with 5. We had no tank. I tell them that. I also point out the inherent flaw with grouping that bronze players don't seem to get. When you're in a group, you can be aced much more easily. They don't listen. I followed that adage "5 people doing the wrong thing together is better than 1 guy doing the right thing with 4 people pissed off at him" We got aced and lost. And it was my fault. I was 2nd pick. The adc picked before me. the jung didn't pick tank, the supp didn't pick tank, and the mid picked ziggs, a squishy as hell mid, even as far as midlaners go. So we were all fairly squishy. I say to them, we have no tank and low cc, why would we group. "Shaco shut the fuck up. Thats literally the stupidest thing i've ever heard" I tell them it makes even less sense because, while I'm doing ok, as a team we're behind. And even though i hadn't died, i had enough trouble with riven negating most of my e damage with her op shield, so i couldn't leverage much of an advantage, just barely winning lane. They tell me "You have no idea how to play the game, The enemy is grouping, so why wouldn't we"? I respond with "Because they're a deathball. They have ranged cc with cho, which sets up a blitz grab, which turns a 5v5 into a 4v5, then riven gets in, stuns, aoe knocks up, cho eats someone, and their adc mops up the other three." They didn't listen, and exactly that happened. And it was my fault for picking ap shaco top and not wanting to group. Then for the rest of the game i refused to group, so i got reported.

I'm going to assume this is ranked. In ranked, you want to win. Picking something a bit strange like Irelia mid works usually, but Karthus top, I'm sorry to say, sucks. You got lucky. Almost every toplaner with a gaplcoser will destroy, just as assassins do. Now for your second paragraph, I agree, it's dumb for them to say that, but in general there is a reason why the meta exist, it's the best way to win.

TacoTheKitten9/25/2015, 11:59:21 PM4 votes

My last game was a 4v5 that lasted over an hour and we literally did nothing but just play with no fucks given... duo mid till our riven afk'd, no adc... 4 frozen heart malphite. And that all stemmed from a highly toxic pregame lobby where me and two other people just said "fuck it" and we all just decided to play with no fucks given. That was the most fun I've had playing in a while. The best games are where you just play like it's a video game, not some competition.

It doesn't matter which champion one picks for a solo lane. Almost all of them work.

For example, Alistar top used to be a devastating lane bully due to his automatic AA after Headbutt. Taric can actually out duel most champions if built tanky AP due to his shield. Nunu can out-sustain the best drain tanks and poke his opponents out of lane.

Still, I am surprised that you could win against Riven as Karthus. I would imagine the match up to be Riven coming to lane at level 6 and 100-0ing you. However, perhaps it wasn't the best idea to pick Karthus before you knew what the enemy top laner is going to be. Karthus has so many counters due to his immobility, and a tankier champion might benefit your team more.

If you are looking for another cool off-meta pick, try top/jg TahmKench. Most people haven't realized that he counters all the Juggernauts and Fiora.

His Shield will almost completely negate Darius's and Garen's ultimates. As well, abilities that suddenly grants health/shield are surprisingly effective against Fiora (One of the reason a weak early game champion, Nasus, counters her).

His gank potential with his ultimate and the insane AOE slow range on spitting a minion is also extraordinary. He just might become a staple pick soon. XD

I think the problem is people have settled into the "rules" of the game too much on this game, and stopped actually playing for fun... if they EVER played for fun in the first place. Seriously, ranked players; some of you scare the crap out of me.

What I mean by "settled into the rules" is that certain champs can only be played certain ways on certain parts of the map with certain equipment. If you play even slightly different, you become an instant failure and everyone hates you. You're also not allowed to play your favorite champ; instead you have to "choose for the team", which often requires you to play a champ you might not be so good with... which demands you learn every champion to some extent.

It's the same as when I used to play WoW back in the beginning. There I was playing a hunter, exploring and running around enjoying the game and people I occasionally grouped with would tell me I was "doing it wrong", and had the wrong equipment and so on. I wasn't a bad player or getting anyone killed and I genuinely enjoyed playing the game... but if I wasn't sticking to the rules, then I was somehow failing at playing the game "correctly".

Last I checked, I play games for the enjoyment, not to follow the "preset designs" or character builds.

The weirdest to me is when people pick offmeta supports. Like, people are playing Vel'Koz support at Master, there must be some reason... Oh is it the amazing gold income available to supports now in comparison to before? And the fact that a lot of support items have better stats on them now? Hmm...

Like, if I wanna play Ziggs support just trust that I've done it before. I'm a support main. Just shh, let the second secret APC carry you to victory.

Urgonnalearn2day9/26/2015, 9:35:39 AM3 votes

The problem is that "break the meta" picks more often than not fail dramatically. Like 1 out of every 10 times you see it; it's some guy who thinks he's gonna suddenly make Vayne top work and he hardly plays Vayne.

Fenriyx9/26/2015, 5:38:33 AM2 votes

Break the META!

Ionian9/25/2015, 8:53:45 AM2 votes

I don't go for off-meta picks in ranked exactly because of that, but in normals it's fun. Ahri top, Ahri support, Ahri jungle, Irelia adc, Irelia jungle, Leblanc adc :DDDD

BlueBanthaMilk9/26/2015, 1:40:36 PM2 votes

Even playing morde ADC in high bronze is oftentimes enough to set your team on serious yelling tilt for an entire game.

They deny that it's a thing, even until the postgame when you have half as many deaths and twice as many kills as the next closest person on your team.

ZenBudS9/26/2015, 6:23:56 AM1 votes

Generally your suppose to make sure your team has tank/peels before you make a selfish top pick as you did, as in a tanky support plus jungler. Your team probably lost because your karthus top... I would be mad too. Yeah you can win lane with quinn or heimerdinger top, But your probably setting your team up for failure late game. You winning your early game only made the game drag on more for which was almost certain from your troll pick to be a losing game anyways.

TDubH9/25/2015, 1:45:59 PM1 votes

May i just congradulate you on winning lane? if i were the riven i'd wait til brutalizer use my mobility to dodge your q's go in and burst you then walk out... to out play that... well done!

chipndip19/26/2015, 1:15:00 AM1 votes

Reason why you were blamed: Top lane is where the front liners usually go, and if you send a fighter like Riven or Yasuo there, you need a front liner in your jungle. It's not good when someone goes Ekko or Riven or Yasuo or Lissandra top when you don't have something like Cho or Xin or Shyvana on your team too. You may do fine in lane, but the transition to team fighting is probably gonna go sour because your comp as a whole is bad when you pick someone that needs to be protected to play a lane where the protector usually goes.
