How can I do creative things without thinking?

'cause, I've done great pieces of art, but never when I'm totally awake. Super late at night, I'll just randomly draw something, and it ends up looking great. But, if I'm still conscious as I draw, I think too much and try to make it perfect, and it ends up looking terrible in the end. Same goes for any kind of creative thing I'm doing.

How can I draw (or do anything creative) without overthinking it? >.>

Just think of it in a simple way. Do not worry to much about shading, do not worry about how off scale the drawing is. Just think "I like this, this is my style and I will work with it". That will progress you faster.

I used to try complex art styles that would change my mindset to "THIS HAS TO BE PERFECT". All that did was make me almost stop drawing all together.

Yeah, I'm trying to adopt a more cartoony style, since I feel that'd be easier to do since it doesn't have to look perfect. But my brain is just so set on being a perfectionist. >.> I don't worry about shading so much, it's the shape of things. Like, if the chin isn't totally symmetrical, or if the hair isn't just right, or if this or that. It just bothers me, since I don't know how to not overthink it. xD It looks so weird in the end because of how many times I start over.

Ahh, that one takes a while to get over. The best way to get over that is to draw in a 3/4 perspective. From 2009 to June of this year, I was the same way. All my drawings were symmetrical and every drawing was facing the viewer. My last drawing made me get over that, even thought it was in a style that nearly made me stop drawing. But thanks to it, i no longer look at the symmetry unless i need to.
