A quick Rundown of the new Mystery Chest

After getting about 100+ chests and keys on the PBE, here are some of my findings and thoughts. Though answers were given on the Red Board, there might be info in here that might also intrigue you.

First, this is for people who don't own all the champions. So skip this paragraph if you have them all. For those trying to gain champs, though, the shards you get are mostly skin shards and not champ shards; its almost hard to get that many. I'm not sure if this will change by the time it comes live, but after getting over a 100 chests and keys, I only got about 8 or 9 champs in total. You're better off buying champs directly, and getting the cheapest ones first before doing the reroll. The reroll system is fixed to give champs at random, and its always more likely to get a cheaper champ if you both don't own it yet and by a second rule. The other reason is because you have a area in which you can get the random champ. I have yet to get a 450 champ, because I never got a 450 champ's shard. And, if you combine three shards that all have above 4800, then you have a pure chance of gaining a 4800 champ (or a 6300) depending on which is in the majority, yet there are still chances of getting a 4800 champ even if you combine two 6300s and one 4800. Though this also may be a bug, you never seem to get and champion essence so the only real way of gaining it is to get rid of a shard (which I'd highly recommend not doing, but it is still a valid option if you want a specific champion that is a shard).

Now, about the skins and stuff.

You pretty much usually get a skin shard in a chest, but wards and icons are also available. Majority of the unlocks seem to give skins shards, even of ones you might already own. On the PBE, we all lost every one of our champs, so yeah, this possibility is pretty much certain. This might be subject to a change when going live though.

You can gain multiples of the same shard, and combining three of the same does not automatically give you a skin of the skin but there is still a possibility. Some skins are rare and there are even legendaries and ultimates you can receive. (This might be subject to change before live so don't get your hopes up.) I got a Pulsefire Ezreal shard... but wasn't able to see how much Cosmetic Essence is needed to unlock.

There are also rules when unlocking a skin. You must own the champion to receive the skin which is something you should already know. If you don't own the champ, the unlocked skin just sits there until the champ is unlocked.

When you get a skin you want to activate, thats where this gets tricky. You need the Cosmetic Essence, which is explained on the website. But, you can only activate things you do not own so if you already have the skin, you cannot activate it nor look at how much is needed to activate it, which is why I couldn't do so with Ezreals (so this is where things turn for the better). You can instead use that skin's Cosmetic Essence it gives and save it until you get the needed amount of Essence to unlock the skin. Its a lot better if you have the shard already, and then start saving after. I wouldn't save until I got a the specific champion skin shard, but its not bad to press luck and try. Just remember there are over 260 skins right now.

Getting icons and ward skins are probably as rare as getting a champ shard (so yeah... your not going to get many champ shards). Right now, I think there's a bug in the system causing you to automatically get icons without using essence or combining. Ward skins are fine, though, and they are cheaper than skins (obviously).

Other items you get are as such; a rare gem and usually Cosmetic Essence (either 50 or 100). A rare gem should be explained on the website, but you sure do get a lot of CE (thats the term now, I'm too lazy to type out its name...). There are plenty of ways to get CE; you usually get it when you combine champions, you get it if you combine skins of high value but get a lower value skin (or it just gives it sometimes), and sometimes chest just have it in there to give to you. (These things can be subject to change.)

It's an interesting idea, but unfortunately the system will be mostly ignorable for me until Riot enables Mastery on the rest of the maps. It's just not personally worthwhile to have to grind that many SR games.
