What's the point of playing before season 6?
The title says it all---what's the point? All stats are wiped clean at the new season, right? Is there any benefit to moving up in rank before the new season?

Stats are not wiped clean. You retain your MMR, which determines your placement next time. You can use the preseason to raise it and get a better spot.
Fun and learning some of the new abilities in the reworks before things get serious.
if you are talking about ranked, no there isn't much point. but if you do move up in ranked it will help your placement for next season
dunno... maybe having fun? you know, that feeling you usually want to feel when you play a game?
