Seriously guys, this lore is awful
I miss the old lore where it was an entire short story with some nice little plot in it that showed the champion's story in some way. Gnar was the last champion to receive proper lore.
And everything changed when the Shurima event happened. Every single Shurima champion had their lore slaughtered. Champions like Rammus and Amumu went from a couple pages of lore to a couple of sentences. It's been almost a year now, and that "placeholder" lore is still there, and all five champions after Gnar (Azir, Kalista, Rek'Sai, Bard, Ekko) have had absolute piss poor lore.
An example of differences in lore:
Bound by a code of honor, the proud swordsman Yasuo, wielding the Wind Technique; the only in generations to master such techniques. After his master is killed when Yasuo leaves his protection to fight back Noxian invaders, Yasuo is believed by Ionian officials to be the killer. Fleeing from his home and also in search of his master's killer, Yasuo now wanders the land, with nothing but his sword, his wits, and the wind on his back.
That is a short description of his lore. And my little summary does not do it justice at all. And, like all other pre-Azir lore, at the end of the story their is a quote, in this case, Yasuo's. However this quote often varies, and gives insight on the champion.
"The story of a sword is inked in blood" -Yasuo
Now some current lore, post-Shurima event.
Got betrayed, wants vengeance.
That's pretty much it. No real insight at all about her. Even Thresh, a champion who literally was designed with a "no insight on past life" view, has a decent amount of insight on his past life.
Mentions sand, tunnels, and killing.
Fun fact: It isn't even mentioned that she's actually from the Void. In fact, it doesn't even say that she is the queen of the Xer'Sai in the actual lore. As far as anyone who has only read that for her lore, she's just some Shuriman sand worm part of some Shuriman race of sand worm things.
Time. Kid. Wow. Cool cool. Protect friends. Zero-Drive. Zaun.
I learned 10x more from the teaser trailer...
We used to have intricate rivalries;
and
fought over who shall be the true master hunter.
and
all fight for who is truly the Queen of the Freljord.
and
are constantly chasing down
and stopping her shenanigans.
Riot has let this game devolve from a mature, strategic game with intricate lore and backgrounds for all characters, intertwined with conflict between countries and rivalries of champions, into a flat out action-fest aimed for 13 year olds who spend their free time watching Michael Bay movies thinking there so kewl.
Remember when Riot actually cared about the lore? Karthus was the Harbinger of Death, guide of dead and reaper of souls. He was death incarnate, and the guide of fallen. Now his lore something along the lines of "Lawl undead guy!"
