Does this apply to someone gifting a legendary skin? I'm planning to gift a friend dragon trainer tristana so would she get the chest or would I or would it not count in general since it's not a self purchase?
According to what I've read
"From December 23 through the end of Snowdown, whenever you grab a Legendary skin, you’ll unlock a free Mystery Box. If that Mystery Box contains a Legendary skin, you’ll get another Mystery Box, and if that one is packed with a Legendary, well… you get the idea. We’re calling it Legendary Snowball!"
I think it only applies to skins that you grab to you
If you send a Legendary skin to someone THEY get the Legendary Snowball Mystery box. But if someone sends YOU a Legendary skin you get the Legendary Snowball Mystery Box.
