Can anyone, preferably a Red. explain how placements work?

Had a buddy in Gold 2 last season end up Bronze 3 after going 4/6 in placements. I was Plat 1 or 2 last reason and after going 5/5 in placements I get Plat 5.

My friend only lost one more match than I did but he dropped two entire ranks. I go even on my placements and I don't even drop one rank. There are also tons of threads about people doing better than I did in placements and being places 1-2 ranks below. There seems to be little rhyme or reason to placements. I am not complaining about my placements... I just want t understand them.

i would like to know about this as well i wasnt plat but i dropped a whole rank in placements and went 8/2 wans still got bronze 4

People put to much thought into placements. It's all about mmr.

You played against higher mmr and won against higher mmr opponents so you didn't get hit as hard. Your buddy probably played against lower mmr opponents beat the really bad, like b5, but lost against b1 mmr opponents.

Again people need to stop looking at placements as each game had the same weight as the next.

Also plat players play against all 1600+ mmr, since everyone diamond and up are in p1 Max, so unless you are extremely bad you won't drop that far.

You can't look at where you were at the end of last season. You have to look at who you were playing. Maybe he was gold 2 but he was playing against gold 5 due to low mmr. Also each game is not equal in placements. I believe the first two or three after very important the last 4 or so are minor tweaks.
