How to get newly released champs at lower IP cost!

Hey guys, I might be super late on this but I thought I'd put it out anyways in case it makes someone's day.

If you have all champs unlocked, you can still buy champion shards from the store for 1700 IP each. Whenever you have 3 shards, you can merge them to unlock a single random champion you do not own.

Get where I'm going with this?

A good example is Xayah and Rakan, i bought them like so:

If you have all champs unlocked, and 6 shards in your hextech loot, which cost a total of 10200 IP, you can unlock both Xayah and Rakan by using the shards. Unlocking both champs on release day would have cost you 7800 each (they usually cost 7800 for the first week, then drop to 6300), so 15600 IP is what you would normally spend for both champs. You just saved 5400 IP, which is enough to get 3 more shards for the next champion release!
