It is a PvP game. You defined a PvE game well. PvP games are a different story.

PvE games, be it solo or group content, is about breaking those high scores and more. PvP games and content have it where the

comes from. Call it the competitive environment. Unlike Referees in sports, there is nothing close like it in video games. Sure there can be punishments, but those can be mild and take such a long time before anything happens to said offender.

Even then, back when i used to play on the 360 when it was fairly new these people in the "competitive environment" still didnt talk as much trash as they do now a days, Like srsly, you won a normal game, why does that mean i need to go force feed my family bleach and shoot myself in the head? like wtf?

As someone who is more in the Nintendo line, I cannot say for sure, but I'd guess online console interaction was young. Players were more willing to cooperate and be friendlier then they are now, some 8ish years after the XBox 360 release.

Competitive nature. That is all I can really say. People want to win. They allow that urge to win transform into something terrible and this is the result. Whenever I play online PvE content, say Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, I have never been exposed to anything negative at all. Destiny Raids? None.

PvP is much more competitive so it brings out the worst more.
