If they stick with the metal theme, they will have to drop the shadow isles background. Then there will not be much room for them to expand on his character. You guys have to think about the bigger picture instead of selfish desires.

If they are focused on "Lord of death" then they can easily turn him into a spirit that inhabits a metal suit(think of Alphonse Elric from full metal) and have some control over spirits(which explains his ulti) go from there.
But with "Master of metal" that has nothing to do with his ties to the shadow isles and how he can turn people into spirits to fight for him. And with his current look they would have to pretty much stray from the mage side of him and turn him into a juggernaut.

combine dark magic (portrayed w/ spooky effects and lightning) and mix it with metal (shrapnel flying everywhere)
like right off the bat, make his ult more visually obvious by shooting out lightning n' shit around them. E shoots out shrapnel and lightning, W is made a metal storm again, etc
make the magic create metal for his E, shoots lightning at the floor and it throws up metal spikes

The metal theme was NOT cohesive, it mainly stemmed from his W, his joke, and riot naming all of his abilities after metal music.
Besides those things (those being meta jokes, and his W easily being described differently), Nothing about him screams metal mage.
"He wears a big suit of METAL armor!" As opposed to what, wood?
"He used to shoot little maces out of his big mace when he hit them!" That was a cheesy particle effect that would never have survived a VU.
When I think "Metal Mage", I think Avatar, or Full Metal Alchemist. In my opinion, Morde has about as much right to be the "Master of Metal" as Nautilus does.
