I know people can shit on Riot a lot; But you have to give them credit for what they've done

League of Legends has been the most popular game in the World since about season 3. As of now in season 7 having 100 Million players log in to play league at least once a month (Even if 50 Million were smurfs its still largest game by about 35 million).

And you have to appreciate the amount of work that has been put into League Of Legends; Yes there may be some times in League when everything felt like shit wasn't getting fixed, but Riot always comes around and fixes the problem. They keep the game updated, polished, and add new things every single 2 weeks for the past 7 years. They constantly interact with players, give information on what they're working on, and just overall keep everyone up to date on whats going on with League and where its going.

League of Legends is by the most polished and well rounded game I have ever played; Never have a I played a game more then I have played League, and I think that goes for a lot people.

Riot has their faults, their weaknesses, the times they struggle to fix things, and sometimes even completely break the game. But they always make it work.

Thank you Riot for making one of the most enjoyable games I have ever played.

autofill still active.

"but they always make it work"

yea idk about that one.

Either auto-fill, or long ass queues with poor game quality as the game takes from an ever increasing MMR pool the longer the you wait.

GayFluffyUnicorn7 votes

And current game quality is not poor? I just lost two games because of autofilled shit junglers. You know that role that currently decides the outcome of the game 90% of time. Let's see the two games after that i lost because of the same premades i got queued with. Plat 1 duo with a gold 1 i get placed in that shit to balance out his dirt premade. Both gameshe managed to die 9 times and be absolutely useless. Talking about poor game quality: plat and low-mid dia is still filled to 90% with dynamicQ boosted monkeys ruining games. So i'd say i take long queue times if all the other shit disappears. Sadly riot doesn't care about the any of this. Q times are the holy grail for them and whatever does not concern pro play or master/challenger riot doesn't give a fuck about. Otherwise diamond and lower would be cleansed, we had a pure SoloQ and we would go back to the old CS so everyone needs to be able to play more roles instead of playing jungle once out of 20 games making it an instant loss for everyone else. And don't get me started about the current meta.

LankPants4 votes

Were queue times that long last season when autofill was disabled most of the time? I think my average queue was shorter if you account for time wasted by dodges. Game quality was also higher since you were unlikely to get a autofilled player who doesn't know the role.

Autofill is needed in high elos, it's not needed bellow Plat on any server and not needed bellow Diamond on large servers.

Sraeg20132 votes

Currenly we have all three at once.

Autofill, long queue times and poor game quality.

Why? Because those few sane people who get autofilled into the role they are bad at dodge and if they don't they ruin them instead. So autofill is the big bad here.

Except unlike the trope, there is no hero to defeat the big bad.

They've made a game that feeds off of peoples' competitive nature and gets them addicted, and they milk money off of that, despite the game itself and the company behind it being trash. I'm supposed to applaud that?

I'd much rather applaud some company ACTUALLY CARING ABOUT THEIR GAME BEYOND INCOME POTENTIAL and becoming successful. A company that didn't just make a game to make money, but rather because they loved what they do and wanted to share their ideas with other people.

Unfortunately, the second kind of company doesn't exist. Likely never will, if the direction society is headed in is any indication.

the weeaboo3 votes

I don't think addiction is part of the plan, it's just due to wanting to become better and there's no cap on how good you can be.

However I agree they do milk money. Prime example being Mastery Levels 6/7. Takes forever to get the Blue Essence without spending any money. Even when you get the champ shard for 1.7k, theres no guarantee you'll get anything close to what you need. Need 600? Oh, here's an Amumu shard. Congrats you are up 50 Blue Essence!

It's understandable being a free to play game but paying 20$ for one in-game cosmetic that can be reproduced for no cost seems a little greedy. I continue to buy skins. And yeah it takes money to design them but these skins aren't going to lose value once their complete because there is no trading system in League. It's a closed system.

But on the other hand you have to understand that Riot is first and formost a COMPANY. Meaning they're sole purpose is to produce revenue. Of course the employees want to appease the community, but the people running Riot Games don;t care about us, they care about the shareholders.

Love you Riot <3

Oh addiction is VERY much part of the plan. That's the only reason this game is still alive.

However I agree they do milk money. [...]

It goes way beyond just hextech, just about everything Riot does is a cash grab, but I'm not goinna get into all that.

[...] Riot is first and formost a COMPANY. Meaning they're sole purpose is to produce revenue.

Gaming companies weren't always like this. Some of them just made games for fun, and others actually loved what they did. Money was just a side effect of them doing a good job.

Of course the employees want to appease the community, but the people running Riot Games don;t care about us, they care about the shareholders.

And that's why I want a company that ISN'T run by a bunch of business students looking for a quick buck. I want a company run by gamers or developers who actually give a fuck beyond money.

the weeaboo1 votes

feel free to not play the game if you dont like the company lmao

Anidan1 votes

The second kind may not exist company-wide, because it's a company and they employ more than just game developers (for several reasons), but I've seen some games where the developers of the games themselves actually do care about the games beyond just the income it generates. You can't expect a whole company to do that other than the fairly small indie companies made up of basically just a team of game developers and only a few suits, if even that many.

They're less common, but the second type of developer does exist. I'd say the developers of Pillars of Eternity (and their coming sequel), for example, genuinely care about their game. I'd say the creator of Undertale cared about their game. Irrational cared about BioShock 1 and System Shock 2 beyond just the income.

Niyumi1 votes

Oh I'm aware developers themselves usually care. Even in Riot, I've seen great examples of people doing the right thing, even if they're not making money for it. But the suits have never cared, and we kept them out of the industry. Now the suits run everything and quality is shit.

And, I can expect a company to do that, because one already has. Remember Nintendo, under Yamauchi and Iwata? They turned down so many business deals that would have made tons of money, because all those deals went against their principles. So, instead of saying fuck all to quality, they stuck to what they knew was right, and Nintendo was the largest, most successful gaming company for a decade or more. But, now that bratty kids went and enabled scams like DLC and F2P, money is what runs the gaming industry. After Yamauchi died and Iwata stepped down, Nintendo started to slip, and is now like any other shitty company. As far as I'm concerned, Nintendo died with Iwata.

I hope that one day a company follows in their footsteps, but continues caring about more than just money far into the future. Maybe then I could be happy again (gaming was always my escape from reality, and I really only felt happy when I could lose myself in a show, game, book or something), be excited about the games I play, and look forward and see something I like.

I know that dream will never come true though.

Anidan1 votes

Probably not anymore at this point. Your best bet there is indie startups anymore and that often has its own problems. Once a company gets so large then it usually goes to be run by suits because, while motivated by greed on one part, they also tend to be the better people at financial management (since it's their job, generally) and time management since that's essential to proper financial management. Both of those are actually very important for a game dev so they don't run over their budget or have to extend deadlines repeatedly. Not to say that those can't happen regardless, because the industry is rife with examples of just that, but they do have an use, even if I don't like it either.

At this point, I usually just focus on the developer. If Obsidian puts out a game, they've earned my trust at this point. If Ubisoft puts out a game, I have to see who they're publishing for and check the developer's track record, and go from there and account for Ubisoft themselves, which has led to me taking a step back from almost all of the Triple A publishers. My escapes at this point are limited to very few games, Pillars being one of them since, like Baldur's Gate before it, I can play it repeatedly and feel good about it knowing the devs actually care and it shows.

Maybe one day another company will follow the footsteps of old Nintendo. One can dream, but knowing reality, I tend to agree with you and say it likely won't happen.

I'd say, LoL is the most popular game in the world, despite Riot, not because of Riot.

Their development philosophy seems to be "try a bunch of random stuff until something accidentally works"

The Governer4 votes

If the game is that popular, why did Riot remove game modes? Why couldn't they sustain both Ranked Flex and Normal Draft in some of the servers?

I am not questioning the validity of their claim. I am just asking.

Sraeg20131 votes

Because the only place in the world the game is actually growing is China.

I don't understand how that is suppose to be a valid argument. Because people on the street would name something else then that just means that league isn't the most popular game? There are numbers that show that league was and probably still is the most popular game.

Also: popular: most people playing famous: most people knowing about it

The game can be popular among gamers and not famous among general public

So much this.

If we believed the population, all manner of terrible things are suddenly true. I mean, just watch those silly late-night talk show segments where they ask people on the street easy questions. People be stupid.

Furthermore, LOTS of people have heard of this game. I barely mention it to anyone that has never heard of it anymore...

I'm sure if we added together all unique players throughout all CoD games, it'd surpass League. Just an example.

Spaceman5pff1 votes

But you have to take ONE CoD game. League is ONE game.

Enselus1 votes

If you can't understand what I'm trying to say, you're not worth my time lmao

Spaceman5pff1 votes

Lonegevity is irrelevant.

CoD wouldn't put out a new game every year if they weren't required to to keep players interested.

Enselus1 votes

Riot wouldn't release a new patch every month, or preseason every year, or champion every few months, if they weren't required to to keep players interested.

Spaceman5pff1 votes

Riot is required to release far less new content in a given year.

Heck, they have had the same map for how long? Look, all I am saying is that if you compared unique accounts for both platforms from 2010 - 2017, League would likely be higher.

You can't very well count more years of COD than LoL and expect people not to realize you stacked the deck

BabeisBae3 votes

CS:GO, far more popular, with both viewers and playerbase, that game is growing by an astronomic amount per year, wherein league is dying, slowly but they used to be at 150 million active users in season 5.

Snowplosion2 votes

Far more viewers, lol. Go on Twitch and tell me which one is being watched more right now.

WoonStruck1 votes

Tell me which one's tournies get more attention.

A bunch of wannabe memelords watching imaqtpie isn't exactly 'higher viewership'.

They aren't watching for LoL. They're watching imaqtpie no matter what he's doing.

Snowplosion2 votes

LoL World Championships peaked at 14.7 million concurrent viewers.

CS:GO's Major Championship peaked at 1.6 concurrent viewers.

Not sure how important the Major Championship is, but the LoL Championship has a way higher viewership. As for IEM Katowice the numbers between LoL, CS:GO, and the other games are lumped together.

You got actual data, because I can easily find some 2016 data. LoL seems to be the highest downloaded PC game there is, as well as the highest grossing online video game.

https://www.superdataresearch.com/us-digital-games-market/

Here's one example. I can link other websites, but this appeared to be the least biased source, even if the others agree.

Now, you got two options. You can respond with data that contradicts my own, or you can admit that the only thing out of your ass was your skeptism. And yes, silence/refusal to respond will be seen as the latter :)

Nice. You showed me a sales chart for a free game. Youre an idiot arent you?

Also free download= more downloads.

Plus they make their revenue off of people buying their weekly skin scam.

Yeah, free stuff tends to be popular if it's good shit too. Who'da thunk?

Plus they make their revenue off of people buying their weekly skin scam.

How the fuck is it a scam. It's a cosmetic, it's promoted as a cosmetic, you do not need it to play the game.

And you still haven't provided a source for any other data yet still continue to argue. If there's an idiot between us, it certainly isn't me.
