Why is it so hard to drop Tiers?

I understand it is considered a milestone when someone finally reaches gold/plat ect. but why is it so hard to drop once you reach it? It creates a very toxic environment to be in silver 1/2 or gold 1/2 ect when you are constantly matched with Gold 5s/Plat 5s who have much less to lose in the game than you do.

I feel like it should be easier to drop tiers. Thoughts?

It's not really THAT hard to fall from a tier. It is much easier to drop divisions yes, but you can still fall from tiers if you go on a really bad losing streak. Like I got there last season and could feel that I was close to falling to silver 1 as I had about 9 games lost in a row before I got a win again and set it back on track.
