Looking back, how in the world did League get its first ~1000 players?

LoL may seem like a huge game now with its millions of users, but it had to have started with almost nothing at one point.

It's a multiplayer game with a significant learning curve (what is this 'AP' stat?) and it was made by a company with no prior name, so how exactly did League reach critical playerbase mass in the first place?

The game's beta was anticipated to some extent. Some HoN players were looking forward to the game's beta. It was developed by Warcraft III and Dota developers, which were popular. It wasn't just released from nobodies into nothing.
