If a player is unable to connect to a match, at least make the champion a AI. It would make things so much easier. Or better yet, don't start the game. If they disconnect, have the game go through a "pause" where time, turrets, and minions do nothing and wait for about up to 5 minutes for the player to return. If the player does not return, allow the game to run and have the surrender be lowered to 15 minutes. If your team (and I have to say this word) sucks, then you will probably lose by 20 minutes, if your team does well, one screw up and can cause it to favor a side and the odds are that your side will be the one to screw up (also, a screw up on the enemy team is easier to overcome due to its 5 v 4 period). And, then there are those times a team will win with a 4 v 5 but thats only when you are doing well. Not when Malzahar is gaining a lot of power mid when our jungle TwistedFate will not go and stop him waiting for our afk mid Cassiopeia to return as she did but then she lagged out again, so in the end, I did a bad thing and gave up easily but would you blame me? At the 15 minute mark, Malzahar got bored of winning and Jinx and Braum were now just roaming while our Ashe still seemed to have trouble firing a R (when need be) until after a perfect opportunity. This is just one of the 45 times I've had this happen (very similar to this one instance) and I just wish something could be looked into about it to try and fix it or make it better.

I definitely agree that some kind of pause to wait for someone who doesn't connect and/or just canceling the game after a few minutes if someone doesn't connect would be great.

No way on AI though. That would be worse than an afk. Even lower ranks would just be feeding on the bot. So it would still be 4v5 in the end except they will guarenteed be fed.
