Does the player's gender matter to anyone?

I played a game recently in which an which an Annie was playing really well and I made the comment "She is kicking our asses" and I was immediately caught off guard by a teammate's response. "How do you know she is a girl?" This lead to a sort of debate that confused me and the player asking in /all if the player was a girl. I never once considered the gender of the other players. I never cared and still don't. Male or female never concerned me. I only see the gender or the Champion. If someone is playing Gragas he is playing well. Syndra? She is who I am facing.

After this I saw a similar incident happened. Janna kept Qing and ulting Pantheon every time he tried to stun someone and the adc said "She just won't let you touch me" and the Janna got super angry and made it very clear that he was not a girl.

Does this actually bother people? Do people actually get offended when they are referred to by their champions gender or was I an idiot and got trolled?

I always refer to the gender of the player as the gender of their champion, unless I know them in person.

There are so many immature 12 yr olds that play these days, and start a fight whenever they want. Maybe not a fight but at least an argument. I am a girl that plays league, and I have been playing for about 4 years now, and No, I do not get offended when I am referred to as a 'boy' when playing a male champion. On the other hand, i DO get offended in Champion Select when my team makes me play support ONLY BECAUSE my league name makes it obvious that I am a girl. I'm serious, more times then not, I am told I cannot play ADC (my strongest role) only because I'm a female and I need to support... I do not start a fight about it, but it DOES get under my skin.

It's strange to have someone get that upset over it, I try to use Champion names instead because of this but then every once in awhile you get the Summoner that gets upset you won't type their Summoner Name. There's literally nothing you can do in-game, online, or in real life that won't offend someone somewhere down the line. But, for now I refer to people as their champion's gender (unless corrected.) I am female, and if someone uses "he" too much when referring to me I will correct them but it's not something to get upset over.

I guess, in an online community like LoL there isn't much you do have control over when things start going sideways so some people might grasp at what they can control?

You're playing Jayce? I will refer to you as a man because I'm talking about Jayce and not YOU. You're playing Sona? I will refer to you as a woman because I'm talking about Sona and again, not YOU. Oh you're playing Ezreal? I will refer to you as THEY/IT/THAT because "I have no clue what Ezreal is" (jk) and maybe I am indeed talking about you at the same time.

Last time I played Ashe in an aram I was referred to as Male and when I played Varus I was referred to as Female by one of my teammates. Whatever bruh...I might as well be a potato!

But anyway, I have no problem being called the gender of the champ I am currently playing. Some people need to open up in order understand why they were called a girl while playing a female champ and a guy while playing a male one.

Referring to someone by their champion name is easier, faster, and also everyone can understand who you're speaking to without searching for Summoner Names in the leaderboard and also makes it so gender confusion doesn't happen as anyone can be male or female playing the game, but it would just be rude to ask their gender when you don't know the person at all.

In terms of looking at male or female players differently, there are a lot of women on Twitch who abuse themselves for viewers. But other than that, my sister and another female friend of mine all play League of Legends with me and my male friends; and I don't really see a difference between genders and video games.

Ahahaha I love how one example is a male correcting somebody for calling him "she" in game. Why? Because whenever you see a girl correct somebody in this manner people often say it's trying to get attention for being a girl. When I was first playing games online I'd correct people who called me a "he" because I didn't think it was a big deal to want to be referred to by the proper gender pronoun. But along the lines of "it's not a big deal" I never got offended by being referred to as a male. (Eventually I stopped correcting people unless I played with them repeatedly.)

Anyhow, in game, I almost always go by the champion's gender. Heck, I'll be on skype with somebody I know IRL and he'll be playing a female champion... And I'll refer to him as her in the skype call on occasion. (Or vice versa) This mindset is emphasized by the fact that rarely to people refer to each other in game by account name - it's always by champion. I refer to you as Janna, not as Supercoolguy53.

People just want to get upset over anything they can anymore. I would just ignore it, you didn't do anything wrong. I'm a guy, but if I'm playing Janna or something and you call me a she, I honestly don't care and wouldn't correct you. I know you mean the character, no reason to blow up something so silly.

I'm sure the people who get insulted at being called by the wrong pronouns are young boys who consider being female an insult. You know, because females are such pathetic, weak, incompetent creatures and heaven forbid anyone dare imply you might be one of those inferior creatures.

If you're female you're most likely used to getting called "he" since people automatically assume everything is male by default and female is just some weird deviation. It's also why certain people keep insisting that Rek'Sai is a he and claiming they don't care about her gender despite literally assigning the opposite gender to her instead of calling her an it. The internet is filled with lonely socially maladjusted guys, so if you're a girl, you learn pretty quickly that mentioning you're female is basically opening doors to creepy comments, sexist insults and/or a lot belittling. So most of the time it's better to avoid the topic or just downright lie. Heck, if I refer to my sister, I'll just use "he" so she can avoid all this crap.

But as for getting called by the wrong pronouns? Most people don't care. How in the world are you supposed to know someone's gender anyway? Hell, I don't care about your gender, I work with what I've got and what I've got is that you're Irelia so I'm going to be calling you "she". I've only once seen someone get insulted at being called the wrong gender, it was a raging Karma and my sister said "girl, calm down" and got the hilariously dumb "ur mom is a girl". I think even the guy realized how stupid that retort was, since he kept pretty quiet from then on.

I believe that gender is not really a factor in a video game since there is no reason to use gender. I don't know if I'm just a little behind the technology but I don't have a button attached to my penis that I can use to flash giving me an advantage for having a penis.

Conversely I do not know of any augmented breast controls that women can attached their summoner spells to that make having breast an advantage in game either.

It is pointless to care about gender over the internet and frankly peoples obsession with gender and sex only proves we are still not far from being primates. Especially in this context.

Unless I know the people, I always talk about the other people in the game as the gender of their characters. I personally don't see an issue with that, since the physical representation i'm seeing of that person is female. If they make an issue of it then of course i'll stop, but i've found most people don't care / do the same thing.

Recently in bronze q had an ADC that we did very well in a game, they added me and wanted to duo. Next game they said "We gonna smoke em Arliden"? To which I replied "It's prison beach rape time!" - They then replied "I'm a girl".... and then proceeded to flame me all game. I honestly was taken back by her attitude, we still won, because I'm a badass support... but the fact that she was severely insulted by a prison beach rape joke to the point of almost throwing the game was crazy.

Needless to say I blocked and deleted and wont' play with her again. I don't give a wank about your gender, play the game, almost every time I've seen gender come up is when females bring it up in the game... which is pointless. Just play.

Yeah, I just refer to people by the gender of the champion they are playing at that moment. If people do the same to me, I don't really care.
