@Riot: You've done enough. Don't redo voicework to remove "Summoner" references.
Riot's said that Summoners, and the League of Legends itself, are being deleted from the canon of the League of Legends. As I've written elsewhere, I find this very odd, as surely the first task of any game's backstory is to explain the game itself in a flavorful way. At any rate, Rioters have said that they don't really have an explanation for what might be going on when you actually play the game.
Though they've said that "I guess Summoners still exist in the game, just not the universe" (let's ponder that for a moment), they also have said "we'll probably need to 'fix' all that later."
Riot, come on. Just leave the voicework alone. You've already completely decoupled the game from the "story" you're creating, and you've already admitted that the game no longer has any lore backing. So just stop there, alright? Let Sona keep saying "Only you can hear me, Summoner." Let Veigar keep accusing me of making a short joke. Let Cho'gath talk about the stains on my soul. Let Lux cheerfully encourage me to stay positive.
In allusion to something once said under rather more serious circumstances: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1eA5bUzVjA#t=64
Riot TommyGnox, may we not drop this? We know Summoners aren't canon any more. You've done enough.
- Let us not assassinate the playerbase any further.* Have you no sense of decency? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?
Let us keep just a little shred of our pretendy funtimes immersion. Let us hold onto this one little bit of lore when Riot sends out emails that begin "Greetings, Summoners!" amidst all the xtreme eSports hype. Rub our faces in how the League and Summoners aren't canon any more, that we no longer are being given any place in what's increasingly your story universe, as often as you like. But draw the line somewhere short of chopping up and stripping down all these charming bits of Champion banter.
You've done enough.
