What was the inspiration behind Gangplanks E?

It is a really cool and fun mechanic which I find is very thematic for a pirate and has awesome synergy with his Q. I would just like to know what led the rioters to this innovation :)

I'd like to ask if the rioters behind the rework referenced aspects of this change from Pirates of the Cariwhich? GP kinda looks like the human Davie Jones.

I'm thinking because back in the day of pirates powder kegs could be used to sink entire ships. So it has synergy with his "ruthless pirate" theme.

Because its always someones turn in the barrell, plus they wanted the new GP to be Barrells of fun.

Because Riot had to throw a Pewdiepie reference in.

Gangplank "BARREL!"

Just kidding, they were trying to figure out a way to replace his old E with something that highlighted what made Gangplank Gangplank. Zoning and burst damage on a melee champion. That's Gangplank. What does his new E do? It zones and does burst damage.

They wanted to make people think he had a viable E
