Well thing is, assassins have to be strong to be viable. Consider a team with an assassin against a team with a typical mage mid in a teamfight. Who has the advantage? Team with the mage. Mage can sit back behind front line and pop off tons of damage, assassin has to go into the enemy team face first and hope they don't get deleted. One of those things you'll see happen quite a bit, assassin mid gets fed-ish mid game by roaming, but as soon as the enemy team smarts up and groups to force a teamfight, game turns completely around. The only way zed straight up carries a game is if your team has no tank and lacks in CC too.
he will melt tanks unlike ap assassins
but i honestly dont have that much of a problem with zed.. its a bit unfair that he can melt tanks and he has a ridiclouse ascape tool
but what people dont realize is that just like nidalee he is verry skilshot dependend
a flash once you get deathmarked could really save you and if you wanna go ful trol mode 
watch his ult do minimal dmg as you get out invisible and he will just waste his ult leaving him pretty useless
