Just a disclaimer first: I don't really remember the details so some of this could be terribly wrong (but I think it's mostly ok)

It's a Chinese company (not sure what they do) that owns a majority (90-100% if I recall correctly) of Riot's shares, and thus "owns" the company. It's not a direct control / takeover situation, so Riot isn't being told exactly what to do.

However, there probably is pressure for Riot to make a profit, because any profit goes to the shareholders.

Actually after the 50% threshold is reached the company is consolidated into tencents aggregate financial statements. Since tencents bought virtually every share of riots stock, riot no longer has any real say about financial decisions and tencent pressures the employees that carried over to push out more content to boost the bottom line. We now see quantity over quality in game updates to please the least common denominator and the game is starting to suffer.While management decisions may still belong to riot games, for all financial purposes riot games does not exist as a standalone entity anymore but as a subsidiary until the point tencent sells its shares in the company.
