Silver Ranked Noob question

I had a wild whim and decided to do my ranked provisionals. I have no idea how but I was placed into Silver IV. So here is my question. It says that I need 100 LP to be considered for promotion and then win 2 out of 3 games to be promoted to Silver II. So what happened to Silver III? How can you skip like that? I am just trying to understand how promotions work better and would have thought if I do advance it would be to Silver III and then II.

As an aside, I am not really too concerned about advancing at the moment. I consider myself lucky to get in Silver right away and the only reason I think I did was because of my support character Karma. I am not great with her but feel I am fairly solid with her. I need to continue to work on my other characters in normal games so I don't get a lot of flak during the ranked games.

If your MMR is good it will let you skip a division and climb faster. So if you place in Bronze 3 and you do well in your games up to your promotion series you can probably skip division 2 and get in to division 1.

They're exactly right. In some rare cases, you may notice that you're the extreme in either direction on your team. This just means that you were added as a balancing factor to sort of even out the overall mmr of your team in comparison to the opposing team's mmr.
