I'm convinced that the bread bakers have a secret alliance with the butter makers

The bakers deliberately put as many holes in their bread as the FDA will allow so you need to use more butter to cover each slice evenly. Not only does this mean you get less bread for a higher price, but you also have to buy butter more frequently because you need more of it per slice.
