What if Ruby Sightstone increased the range on your ability to drop wards?

L Psy Kongroo··281 votes·5,536 views

In the mid-late game, it's extremely risky to constantly walk into dark parts of the map to drop wards. However this creates the paradoxical situation of "I need to ward, but our lack of wards makes it too dangerous for me to ward". Going to ward as a support should not be so risky, especially when 90% of throws happen because people get caught out.

Supports should be rewarded (tee hee, pun) for doing their job properly. So I was thinking, what if Ruby Sightstone, the Sightstone upgrade item, increased the range on your ability to ward by, say, 30%? The exact number is debatable, but the point is warding would no longer be so much of a gamble in an already snowbally game.

And for those thinking "well, this is what blue trinkets are for!" think again, because supports almost never buy that trinket. They almost always buy the red one in order to control vision for the team, taking out opposing wards around key places on the map.

I don't think that the Ruby should have extended ward range - I would just prefer if the damned wards recharged in the field. In late game, you don't have reasons to constantly back anymore, so you're often left in moments where you're out of wards. If they recharged, even as slowly as the yellow trinkets, this would be immensely helpful.

that moment when i recall just to refill my wards and then teamfight breaks out of nowhere 4vs5

So have the wards recharge one every 2m? or on Assist/Kill

50000000000000007 votes

I don't like the assist/kill because if you've already killed the enemy team, you really don't need to ward anymore. It could help after a small fight and trying not to get caught off, though. Just slow recharge time, or maybe even ward recharge from killing enemy wards?

(or just converting enemy wards, holy shit)

It would be very helpful after picks that translate into dragons/baron.

converting enemy wards

Wololo. Seriously though that's a cool idea.

What if it was cumulative? The time added onto the ward is equal to the respawn time for each enemy assist/kill. So let's say your wards have 15s left and you get a kill, and they're back up in 10s. Your wards are now at 25s. And then an assist on someone else, another 10s.

That way it's additive and scales with the time for when the enemy is waiting to respawn.

But... he'd be buying less damage and somewhat less tankyness.

wouldnt he still be limited by the range of his dash anyway?

ChaoticPinecone5 votes

His current dash is about 100ish units further than the yellow trinket/sightstone range.

All I'm going to say is that there's nothing more frustrating than trying your hardest as support in a losing game, moving to ward a brush and halfway through dropping it, you eat an empowered axe from the Draven who's been sitting there for the last minute and get one shot with no option of being able to do anything about it.

And to make it worse, your team spam pings you like you did something wrong?

This idea that a support needs their entire team behind them just to drop 4 wards is ridiculous and frustrating.

Then it would force people to upgrade into Ruby, and the benefits from the eye items would be outweighed.

The changes to Face of the Mountain already made Eye of Targon invalid when compared to the double shield of the Face. I almost never buy the Eye of Targon on any champ I buy Relic Shield on. Plus, the reduction of active cooldowns on Ruby pairs all too well with the Face, Redemption, Locket, and Zz'Rot.

LostFr0st4 votes

Yeah, but that's an imbalance between the tank versions. Tank supps already synergize better with the health from ruby but they aren't the ones getting blown up in the fog.

It's the squishy casters that blow up.

On the contrary, I think this change would give squishy caster supports an incentive to upgrade Ruby earlier because the extra HP would protect them from getting blown up as fast. Tanks might get more use out of the stats, but 500 HP is nothing to sneeze at if you're someone like Lulu or Janna running into who knows what just to get a ward down.

LostFr0st5 votes

Yeah gimme that 100hp for 800 extra gold. Sounds good. Way better than 800g worth of AP/cdr. /s

You'd also get item active CDR, more wards, and increased warding range. As a support, you shouldn't have to worry about buying lots of AP unless you're Brand or Vel'koz.

LostFr0st3 votes

At the cost of dropping an item. Which to drop: item 3107 item 3117 item 2301 item 3190 (item 3504 / item 3222 <--eventually both) item 2055 ?

50000000000000004 votes

Definitely eye of the watcher. You don't need extra AP for slightly larger shield when you have a shit ton of heals/shields already and all the heal/shield booster.

LostFr0st2 votes

But then you lose 10% cdr on your spells <--HUGE, the gold income passive, and the mana regen (so you'll need to back regardless).

50000000000000004 votes

item 3069 item 3107 item 2045 item 3009 item 3190 and item 3504/item 3222 I'd usually go like this, so dropping either Mikael's or Ardent Censer, I guess. Probably Ardent Censer.

LostFr0st3 votes

If that's your pref then more power to ya; you at least thought through your build, and you made up for the cdr elsewhere and know you're making a trade 'cause you won't be able to buy one of item 3504 / item 3222 'till super late due to the item 2055 spot.

I really came here to make sure the people with pitchforks don't try to nuke the eye items.

50000000000000002 votes

I think you actually have a pretty good point. The Eye isn't as bad as I previously thought. I'd still not get it because I really want the extra tankiness and MS boost from Talisman, and I can't really make use of Spellthief's.

LostFr0st1 votes

^^ I think they did a good job if we're able to argue like this about the supp items. I had forgotten the item 2053 passive on the item 3069 rework too. How busted is that on Janna hmm?

50000000000000002 votes

Uncatchable lmao And the active gives you some very small engage power that you lack. It's still not great on its own, but it can help your teammates use their engage by helping them gapclose.

Mecha MaIphite3 votes

Not really. The benefits aren't that significant, and are only really useful mid to late when getting caught out is a lot more punishing. Besides, it's better than leaving it as it is, where nobody builds it unless they're finished the rest of their build.

LostFr0st4 votes

Ruby is good when you have a lot of actives to apply the cdr to, but its hard to fit since it takes up an extra slot. and the tanks get it since item 2045 + item 3401 > item 2303

Mecha MaIphite3 votes

But nobody gets it early. If you look at all the most frequent builds on support, they have item 2049 instead of item 2045 , because the game usually doesn't go on for long enough for them to want it. Pretty much nobody buys these items item 2303 item 2302 item 2301 anyway.

If you took it out of the game and just left item 2049, it wouldn't make a difference. The only reason to ever get it right now is because there's nothing left to build.

LostFr0st5 votes

Nobody gets it early because who in their right mind would spend 800g on 100hp and 20% item cdr before they have other items. Plenty of people get the item later in the game though, even 3rd item apparently: http://www.leagueofgraphs.com/champions/items/support/all It's fine right now.

Ahristocats5 votes

item 3107

LostFr0st4 votes

? we're talking between item 2045 +item 3092 /item 3069 /item 3401 and item 2301 / item 2302 /item 2303

Nobody is going to argue about getting item 3107 ; it's basically core on every supp right now.

macromite1 votes

most of the eye items are trash anyway. fuck man one of them could well be deleted and no one would care.

LostFr0st1 votes

Yeah, I loved using up 3 slots instead of 2 by default with item 3098 + item 2049 + item 2055 .
Gimme it back. Rito plz.

macromite1 votes

I like supports that have additional vision capacity. OR have a really good shield OR have a really strong movement speed boost. In addition to ward power Over the ones that don't

LostFr0st3 votes

Yeah, but you give up a potential shield/ms boost item spot by taking up three slots with item 3401 / item 3092 / item 3069 + item 2045 +item 2055 instead of 2 with item 2301 + item 2055

can only place 3 sight wards regardless.

macromite4 votes

no you don't. are you stupid? Fotm gives a shield, it doesn't remove a shield slot. Talisman gives ms boost, it doesn't remove an ms boost slot. and frost queens claim is a slow and also a very strong vision item.

The only way you end up losing slot efficiency is when you buy the stupid eye items, because then you lose out on the really powerful effect of having a lower cooldown on item actives.

LostFr0st4 votes

well... that escalated quickly.

All I'm saying is that the eye items are physically more gold efficient faster than the tier three supp items (maybe with the exception of face), plus they free up a slot. To me, that's worth.

So we're just going to have to agree to disagree then. Good luck on the rift.

macromite3 votes

I'm saying that they eye items are all trash and there is one of them that could be deleted.

They have their purpose of course, you get them on characters that are "supporting" like a brand or an annie. those characters don't want any support items in their build, so minimizing the slots for support items is good for them. However actual supports that want to spend their gold on actual support items should pretty much always steer clear of them.

I mean think As an example if you are a support tank, what is better. item 3190 A shield OR item 3190 item 3401 Two shields.

By taking the eye you can no longer get the extra shield.

Also, getting the eyes don't give extra slots at all. you have the same number of slots. I mean lets compare if we go full support with frost queens or the eye.

item 3092 item 2045 item 3107 item 3158 item 3190 item 3222 item 2301 item 3504 item 3107 item 3158 item 3190 item 3222

going with the eye makes you lose out on spooky ghosts, which is a very powerful ability in and out of fights, it makes you lose out on the item active cdr, which makes all of your other items slightly less effective, and you can carry one less ward with you after you leave base, which means you need to back more often. but you got the ardent boost, which in terms of power is slightly weaker than spooky ghosts, due to its lower capacity to assist your team as a whole.

LostFr0st2 votes

That's not where the eye items shine though. Forget the item 3504 specifically. They shine because of item 2055 .

the real trade is actually: item 3092 item 2045 item 3107 item 3158 item 3190 item 2055 item 3222 item 2301 item 3107 item 3158 item 3190 item 2055

That's the thing that needs solving.

macromite1 votes

thing is, here's the trick control wards become less useful as the game progresses because you don't need it for vision or for clearing vision. item 3364 this is your vision clearing tool.

LostFr0st2 votes

item 2055 becomes more important later since your teamates no longer have space for them. You need lvl 9 for item 3364 and it has a cd and no cast range so you have to "micro-facecheck" to use it. Need both item 2055 and item 3364 .

macromite1 votes

but you don't. place the control in a place before you get full build and it will sit there, it's why it doesn't have a duration.

LostFr0st2 votes

and when they clear it or you need to move it to a new objective?

Asayake 5150glow1 votes

Oh hell no this will give Lee even more threat range.

And make him tankier too.

Milodic Mellodi5 votes

Tbh his threat range is only as far as he can dash to. Whether or not he can put trinkets out farther, he still has to be within range to dash to it. It'll increase his vision, but I think him chasing someone with Ruby Sightstone would actually put him more at risk because they are more likely to get vision of him.
