This whole "It's only a normal" mindset needs to stop

L Psy Kongroo··129 votes·5,709 views

Look, I can understand if you get outplayed once or twice in lane. It happens to me all the time, and I get it. I can understand trying something new before taking it into ranked. I play weird shit like Teemo support and tank Zilean top sometimes too. That is what normal are for. Chilling out, playing just for the sake of enjoying the game.

However...............one thing I cannot, and probably will NEVER understand, are people who play normals and think that just because it's a normal it gives them the right to intentionally troll, feed, or (and this is a contentious point) not put in any effort to accomplish the goal of the game.

I think the first two are self-explanatory, so I'll just focus on the third one here. When I say not put in any effort, I mean the types of people who go full retard and assume that everyone else on the team is playing the game with the same mindset as they are. "Oh, I don't need to group, that's too tryhard, I just wanna split push all game". "Oh, I don't want to bother with objectives like towers and dragon, I just want to see how many kills I can rack up proceeds to die 10 times in lane trying to get kills". "Yeah, I know that whole area of the map is dark and the enemy team could be there waiting for me, but so what, it's a normal! YOLO!".

Statements like these, and others of their kind, are what drive me nuts about the normals community. "It's only a normal" works for some things; the above statements are NOT those things. Statements like those can be used when you're playing in a 5-man with friends, and that is the ONLY times you can go as full retard as you want.

Here's the thing though: the majority of the time you won't be playing with friends. The majority of the time you will be playing with 4 randomly selected individuals who all have different conceptions about the seriousness of the match. Usually (i.e. in 90% of cases) people will be more laid back about it.

But while they may be laid back, they are also well aware of what is required of them when it comes to playing the game. They don't simply shut off their frontal lobes and derp around like a braindead monkey. Just because it's a normal doesn't mean all the knowledge you have about the game should be thrown out the window. There's a big difference between tryharding (trying your absolute best to win the game at any cost) and trying to win (performing with the goal of winning the game).

**Please understand this: tryharding is often frowned upon in normals, but trying to win is EXPECTED. No matter what mode you're playing. **

And I know you all think it's just a game, and it doesn't matter, and blah blah blah, but if it really doesn't matter, why are you all so serious when you play ranked? Because I've got news for you: unless you're planning to get into the LCS or become a full-time content creator, your League of Legends rank does NOT MATTER IN ANY WAY IN THE SLIGHTEST. Your boss at work doesn't give a rat's ass that you're a Challenger-level League player. He'll fire you for skipping work just like any other employee. Your teachers at school don't give a flying fuck about you getting to Masters this season. They expect you to hand your assignments in on time, and will be happy to give you a zero if you don't.

So when it comes to normals and you want to take a break from how shitty your real life is, please remember that tryharding and trying to win are two very distinct entities. Be the later, not the former, and we'll get along just fine.

Oddly enough, it's usually the hardcore tryhards that end up feeding a few kills, and then out of sheer embarrassment, try to play it off for the rest of the game by inting and saying "It's just normals"

In short, laugh a little on the inside that you have encountered someone with such a fragile ego that they need people to believe they weren't trying at all when they died, when they were actually trying their hardest.

IMO tryhard is for ranked. Normals is the practice for ranked. I've had more trolls in ranked than I've EVER had in normals. I don't intent feed in normals. But when people get overly mad at others in normals I remind them it's only a normal. They're not losing LP, being demoted, losing their promos. You'd have to play ranked enough to understand that sometimes you just need to chill in normals. I don't think a lot of people who feed are hardcore, they're probably just testing the champion and how they scale. I do that all the time when I'm learning a new champion. Everyone needs to stop acting like you have to play perfect on your second time playing Viktor. Be glad it was only a normal.

Just Blame Jenny3 votes

There's truth in the latter part of this statement here. I do stupid stuff in normals all the time. Why? It's not because I'm stupid, or because I'm trying to feed. It's because I'm testing the limits of the champion I'm learning.

Lux HD2 votes

I'm not saying all feeders are hardcore.

I'm just saying all feeders (or 99%) who rage after feeding and then proceed to ruin the game with toxicity are hardcore, and are only doing it to distract from the fact that they made a mistake to begin with.

Steenee1 votes

I agree, and I feel this is a huge problem with people in this community, my friends included. People need to realize that it's alright to make a mistake. Things happen, we can't all be perfect. There's absolutely no need to cover it up. If you don't make mistakes to begin with, you'll never learn. But to some, they can't understand that and always make an excuse instead of simply saying "sorry, that was a mistake."

Lux HD3 votes

2 friends of mine come to mind, with almost opposite responses to mistakes they make, and I'm not sure which one is more toxic.

The first friend will take Vi or Poppy and dive the enemy team, then rage after he dies because "nobody followed up", despite the fact that right after he dove, the enemy GP and Nami created a deadzone between him and the rest of us. These are good moments for me to mute Skype.

The other friend will take Kindred and feed a few kills early while overextending for passive stacks, which turns into a "I'm sorry I'm so freaking bad" party. She becomes tilted and her amount of mistakes made exponentially rises from here on out, all the while saying things like "I can't believe I'm playing so bad" and "I'm terrible and holding everyone back".

The first friend fails to take responsibility for mistakes made and resorts to flaming the rest of the team. This holds him back from getting better because he will never fix his errors until he sees those errors in the first place. The second friend places way too much emotional investment into her mistakes, and allows the guilt and embarrassment to negatively affect her performance afterwards. This holds her back from getting better because she can't seem to realize that everyone makes mistakes, and as long as she keeps a cool head and tries to find advantages elsewhere, everything can still turn out fine.

I guess it boils down to self-awareness.

IMO tryhard is for ranked. Normals is the practice for ranked. I've had more trolls in ranked than I've EVER had in normals.

How is this possible ? By saying Normal's would it mean Blind or Draft ? btw, Zilean Top shouldn't be considered weird, ranked play I this could never happen because no one will lock without a complete team (imo) not weird when Blind, don't know what your against, iv'e gone against all Assassins/Divers/Skirmishers in Blind and all they had to do was get early lead and it was done.

But in this would be ranked world I know its hard to break what is thought as laning during 1-3 lvls and go against the grain and triple team up and rotate kills until your 6-7 levels ahead of the opposing team and just think that cant happen. ... but it does, all the time.

just in case explain needed, an wondering how that's even possible, its 1 bot-1mid-2top-jng-top starts top works its way down.. but you wondering were is the opposing Jungler? He is dead from getting 2v1 STOP I know, i know your a super jungler and that would never happen to you unless ganked .... sigh exactly. Funny how some things work outside this thick box called LoL ranked mindset. By now you would think your team would catch on if they hadn't gotten to bottom already, but your bottom lane thinks they can 2v1 a player that's actually built for this moment and win... hey they did win they killed 1 bottom lane champion versus 5 going on 6 opposing team kills, now the fun starts all over, that is a glhf its Normals moment.

Oh that's another thing, its not the Normal's Mindset "train of thought that needs to end" its the flat out cheating that's seen daily in most matches, no one that good of a competitor Oh that's why they say ITS JUST NORMALS .... Hope some people who help write this post and/ or replied realize the fact scripting in MoBa's and LoL isn't new or fixed in anything considered normal's

JustMy2cents

Hope the new client fixes the real problem among others like people actually choosing available champs others feel DONT belong on the field of battle

I didn't learn the rules of early laneing or mid game or late game from LoL, hell its no were near the tutorial a player goes through and a player can have the 16 champs before week 5 of starting that's some more food for this rant post.

You lose nothing by losing a normal. It's a training ground. And by trolls I mean people who will intent feed/afk/pick something like Soraka mid.

Escheton21 votes

Normals are also a pvp practise ground. And banging your head repeatedly against your lane opponent can be a quicker way to see exactly what the champ's and your limits are. And how to play from behind with it. Regardless of intent to win.

Shuyin17815 votes

The opposite of your post can be said about the Rotating Game Modes. Those are meant to be for-fun non-competitive modes. And yet they always get ruined by tryhards that think it's ranked so they have to use the most meta champions for the mode.

One for All is a good example of this. In normal matches you see someone like say Zilean and don't see him as a threat, however in One for All he is one of the top meta champions because your bombs can set-off the stuns of your teammate's bombs. Talon's passive can be stacked by both you and your team at the same time. Vayne's W can be stacked by you and your teammates at the same time. Champions like that tend to ruin the mode when people want to have fun because people can't stand not abusing bad coding.

In URF it's champions like Zed, Sona, Fizz etc that make me not want to play that mode because those champions were all people would play before Riot went ARAM on the mode with AURF, even then if 1 of the top meta picks in that mode landed on the enemy team and none on your team it was gg PROBABLY 70-80% of the time, maybe a little less.

ARAM people do dumb builds on champions just because they find it funny (to an extent is fine, but when your team needs a different damage type so you don't have 5 ADs or 5 APs or are in need of a tank it wouldn't hurt to take the initiative) or do dumb things like jump in 1v5 as a Shaco and use the excuse "It's ARAM". I'm all for having fun in ARAM, that's what the mode is for. But people that use it as an excuse to make bad decisions ends up ruining your team's chances to win by either feeding the enemy team or straight dying late game trying to make a play you shouldn't attempt (like the Shaco example) in turn spoiling that match and taking away your fun.

Point is in this rant is that in Ranked you tryhard, in Normals you practice, in other modes you aim to have fun by not being a tryhard douche or a vegetable ruining other people's experience with dumb plays using the mode as an excuse to be bad.

RocketRelm2 votes

As a question, what champions do you see as 'the most fun'? Opinions differ, and I know that, personally, I strongly dislike playing Yasuo (as an example).

VorpalKitsune1 votes

A fun example to share. Had an individual who got really upset about a person not keeping a champ because they are "op" in aram. When the person went after them about it, they responded it is aram. They dont have fun with that champ so they rerolled for a fun one. The individual that was uphappy about that then proceeded to dive the enemy team every time he was up 1v5 for the next 5 deaths with the response "it aram so it is okay". really put us behind and ruined it for the others.

Shuyin1782 votes

It's annoying when we have 4 squishy champions and 1 tank when we get our champions, then the person with the tank re-rolls because "I didn't want to use it" is their excuse. Get over it and use it. Another thing off the same coin is when we have 4 squishy champions and 1 tank, but the tank decides to go full damage giving us 5 squishy champions causing us to lose because we have no front line.

VorpalKitsune1 votes

we had a balanced comp with or without the person RR'ing the "op" champ, so we would not suffer for the rr. I agree that it is annoying when we need the tank and they rr or build damage. if i am the only tank on our team and I'm not feeling like being a tank i still play a tank because it is needed. unfortunately not everyone is will to compromise.

It's a matter of perspective. If an AP Rengar went 13/2/4, you might think he's pretty alright. If he went 4/13/2, you might blame him for feeding/trolling.

Bottom Line: off-meta picks get reported if they lose and get glorified if they win (look at all the highlights of off-meta builds online). Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8VmpgGCgoM

I agree, to an extent. If you're having a bad day and not playing your best for whatever reason, I'm generally sympathetic to that cause. However, if you continue to make the same stupid mistakes multiple times in a row over the course of the game (e.g. trying to 1v1 your fed lane opponent thinking you can "outplay" them) then I don't see that as simply having a bad game. Even people who have bad games possess a certain degree of common sense, and can recognize when an action is ill-advised.

Riot needs to make an official statement about how normals are still part of a competitive game and that players need to keep that in mind.

You should try in Normals. you dont have to go full sweat shop, but its still a competitive game and you should try your best in every game, even normals.

Also report people who do that and say "its normals I dont care" because riot doesnt track if its a normal game or a ranked game when it comes to reports. they treat every report the same. so if enough people report some %%%% who goes "eh its normals" then they will get banned all the same [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

I agree with your argument, However some core issues I have with it is that you fail to mention that saying its just a normal goes both ways, If some one is screeching at me for "ruining the game" and "KYS" for not performing well, I am going to call them on it for having zero chill, and that this game has ZERO consequences to anyone around you(because we all know rank is only about showing how great/crap you are)

Edit: forgot to mention this is me trying my best in the example, But then again some people cant tell... Just the other day some Lee was screeching at me for losing top lane(really badly) as Ryze vs Wukong, and I, being a relatively new(10-15 games) Ryze who had little expierience with playing against a gap close lane Plus VI/TF cc roams...

One thing to remember. Sometimes someone picks something off to see if it works in normals. Sometimes this goes very very poorly. This doesn't mean they are feeding intentionally. This doesn't mean they aren't trying to win. It just means sometimes things don't go the way people envision them going.

Venomar3 votes

Whenever threads come up like this in any game I think of actual real life Sports.

Basketball is my best example. It's a game, it's meant to be fun, but it has rules and objectives and an over arching theme.

Going outside that theme for a windmill dunk instead of a textbook break away layup is fine, providing you can do one.

Going outside that theme to take behind the back half court one legged granny style shot instead of a textbook breakaway layup, is not, and would not be tolerated by anyone on the court on any court, in any pickup game, unless maybe it was JUST you and your friends.

You don't have to do things the way they're taught or the way everyone else does them, or even the way everyone else thinks is fun. BUT, there's a huge difference between doing something differently and in a way that is fun for you and still putting yourself and your team in a good position to succeed, and doing something differently with no regard for anyone else's fun or success.

It's still a game with a set of goals and a design and theme. AP Allistar is fine, AP Allistar who dives every time he can and just stampedes around with no regard for his team or the state of the rift and leaves his team 4v5 and constantly at a disadvantage is not.

But unfortunately it's the Internet and people can be clowns.

Feelsbadman.

Seriously though, I doubt you'll find many who agree with you here. It's pretty much universally accepted that trolls and intentional feeders should not be playing this game. Even Riot endorses this through bans and similar punishments. It's not just about me wanting others to play the game how I want. It's about me wanting others to at least show some basic common sense, and respect for the people on the team.

Personally i feel that its unfair of them to behave this way in a ranked setting. That being said, i can only ask them to help me win "this" game and have no expectations of their cooperation.

In the normal / low stress / "for fun" GAME mode - It makes little difference, if they want to goof off and be fartmasters, that doesnt change a thing...I went in there to either try something new, enjoy myself, or goof off just as much as they are. So, I just do my thing, unless they are being mean about it. If they want to call people names and treat them poorly then i defend the victim, ask the aggressor to stop and report them accordingly.

Ranked = Legit competitive mode with the competitive meta-game of ranking and all.

Normal Draft = A competitive setting to be played exactly the same as ranked, but without the meta-game, so when the match ends it doesn't matter if you see "Victory" or "Defeat". You shouldn't care about winning in Normal Draft because it's not a competitive mode, but it is a competitive setting so you should play like it's a competitive mode. Ranked gameplay and ruleset without the ranked mindset. Practice things here before taking them to ranked.

Normal Blinds = Not a competitive setting. The mode where "It's only a Blind, it doesn't matter" is how you're supposed to think. This is the mode the people OP is complaining about should be playing. That doesn't mean it's meant for breaking LoL's BC basic rules. Don't intentionally feed or rage or troll and whatnot. But it's a non-competitive setting. It doesn't matter what you do. Play this mode when you don't feel like playing seriously, or trying/testing something against human opponents for the first few times.

Bots = Bots, not human opponents, do whatever you want, who cares. Play this when you don't want to play against people. Personally I like to try new things for the first time or two here, but that's just me.

Gotta say OP, I find interesting you have this problem, because I find the issue usually goes in the other direction, with people treating Normal Draft and even Blinds like Ranked.

It's like when people go, "Wait you're going as Poppy Support? You're trolling" and think i'm going to feed because i;m playing an off-meta champion. Then suddenly i'm 1 / 2 / 18 and helping the team get objectives done with no competition because I just R the jungler + others away. After the game ends, no one apologies to me (not that they have to) and leaves. But if I do somewhat bad, or die at level 2 because of an early gank suddenly people want to tell me i'm trolling / picked a bad champion for support.

I too understand what you mean OP. I try to have fun, experiment, and see what works before using it in Ranked. I however, don't do things I know will sabotage the game (like going Soraka jungle with no intention on ganking but rather getting kills) along with going Support Singed with summoner 11 and leaving my ADC for the rest of the game to counter the enemy team despite my ADC has no one to support them ........ :^)

If you play a normals, it's always fair game to do whatever you want WITHIN REASON and it's a justified. Sure i'm playing with a bunch of strangers but I always try to imagine if I was in their shoes and we had a person pick Heimerdinger that went top despite we have another top laner and tried to CS without ever doing anything else. That would ruin my game, so why would I ever do anything to ruin people's games regardless of the game mode?

Point of this post is that you have to be considerate of others and make choices within reason without making pitiful excuses as to why you did them.

the only tryharding complaints from your team (i.e. those that actually matter) you can get if you try to insist on them picking strictly meta or if you criticize them, even then it's rare. normals are a competitive mode too and while people try the new stuff there (and sometimes odd stuff too) all the time, they usually want to win regardless and are frustrated about losses. some people also come there after having a series of ranked losses and those want to win even more to untilt themselves

from your team

I think this is where this discussion's at. I agree, your team generally does not accuse you of tryharding, it's usually your opponents.

And the reason for that is simple: downplaying someone else's achievements and questioning the circumstances of one's own failures makes some egotistical people feel good.

And then when that 10/0 Zed is on THEIR team, that situation doesn't arise. In fact, I bet those are the same people that would try to take some credit for 'carrying the game' when they're on that Zed's team.

EDIT: I have heard instances of some players' teams calling them tryhards for not surrendering, but in those cases, they're usually labelled trolls instead.

Because, of course, everyone that doesn't want to give up clearly is a sadist.
