Why does Kayle need to level up to gain her wings but not Morgana?
Note: I wasn't sure where to put this discussion exactly, so I put it in General. Hopefully this is okay.
So I was thinking about Kayle and Morgana today and I realized something weird: In-game, Kayle starts with two wings and needs to level up to eventually gain six. But Morgana doesn't. She just starts off with six wings without gaining or losing any.
Now, if we were to look at Kayle and only her, then it does make a degree of sense. By leveling up, Kayle becomes more divine and powerful, and her gaining her wings is symbolic of Kayle reaching her goal of purging herself of humanity and becoming the absolute pure personification of the Aspect of Justice. I think it's a very cool idea and a great way to show it in-game her motive and her archetype as an angel of the law.
However, when you add in Morgana to the equation, things suddenly get confusing, and it doesn't make a lot of sense anymore. Why does Kayle need to level up to gain her six wings, and yet Morgana doesn't? Heck, if six wings are a sign of divinity as in Kayle's case, then why does Morgana have six wings, since she rejects such divinity?
In the lore, the ability to gain wings is never mentioned, and so therefore we don't know a reason within the lore why Kayle needs to gain her wings while Morgana doesn't. Neither does it really make sense given Morgana's theme of wanting to be more human, and therefore less angelic, than Kayle.
However, I have come up with a couple of solutions as to what the alternatives could have been to solve the lack of explanation for the multiple-wing situation. Obviously it's way too late for Riot themselves to actually make changes, but if I were given the chance, this is what I would have done with the design of multiple wings and the mechanic of gaining them in-game with both Kayle and Morgana:
• They both start with six wings, and it remains so for the rest of the game: The most obvious solution, and probably the easiest to implement. Kayle and Morgana start out with six wings, and that's it. If you want to keep Kayle's mechanic of becoming more powerful leveling up you could either (A) give her even MORE wings as she levels up (Probably not a good idea. I'm positive the game wouldn't be able to handle it), or (B) have Kayle's level be visually indicated by the color of her wings or the state of her sword (A better solution. Kayle's wings tend to change color and she eventually splits her sword into two as she levels up in the game right now, so while it is a lot less drastic than gaining new wings, it still shows her ascension to divinity).
• Morgana has only two wings the entire game: As much as I like her little wings that make her collar, if Morgana's themes of remaining human would be better executed if she had less wings, then I'm all in for it. Both Kayle and Morgana start with two wings at the beginning of the game. However, unlike Morgana, Kayle gains more wings because of her journey to lose her humanity. Morgana doesn't care for this motive, and therefore does not gain any wings.
• Morgana LOSES her wings as the game progresses and she levels up: This is my personal favorite, even if it doesn't make that much sense in other ways. In this solution, Morgana starts off the game with six wings. However, as she levels up, she loses her wings until she's only left with two at maximum level. I personally like this method as it's symbolic of Morgana reaching her goal of becoming less divine and more human, and it mirrors Kayle's goal to become less human and more divine. At the beginning, both of them are just starting their journeys of becoming who they want to be. By the end of the game, Morgana has lost her wings and Kayle has gained them, and by that time, they have achieved their goals. It again shows a clear divide and difference between the two sisters, and it tells their story even in the gameplay.
However, it also sounds kind of... Weird. Weird as in, as she levels up, Morgana gets more powerful... When she loses her divinity? It doesn't quite click in that way, either. It does make a lot more sense with Kayle, so I can see why they added this mechanic to Kayle while not doing anything with Morgana. But still, I'm fond of that particular idea, and I think it could better clear the fact of why Kayle needs to level up in order to gain her wings, but not Morgana.
Anyways, those were just my thoughts. What do you all think?
