Cassiopeia - Biography - Universe of League of Legends

Riot really said fuck Du Couteau family rights this time around, huh?

But what I mean seriously: is anyone else really confused by this total shift of the Du Couteau family?

Before, they seemed like a pretty tight-knit family? Like, they kind of had a "blood runs thicker than water" mentality to them. I thought one of the biggest parts about Katarina and Talon was their loyalty to the Du Couteau name, even if it went against Noxus, and it was their father's disappearance as to their primary reason why they distrusted Swain. Even if it wasn't exactly that case in the old lore, a lot of people assumed it was like that, and it extended into Cassiopeia's lore as well.

But this new lore? It first was challenged with Katarina's lore update, but now Cassiopeia's lore update breaks it even further. Not only does Katarina hate and actively rebel against her father, but now it turns out Cassiopeia and her mother - General Du Couteau's wife - was plotting against them this whole time. They're no longer a close family, they're completely scattered in motivations and resentful towards each other.

Now, I'm not saying this is automatically a bad thing. There are some aspects to this new update I like, from both Kata's and Cass's new lore. But I don't really know: I kind of feel that Riot took a complete 180 when writing the Du Couteaus and their relationships to each other, and it feels rather weird that they go with a path so vehemently against their previous interpretation.

Am I the only one who feels like this? I'm not saying the new lore is bad, it's just that this aspect is bothering me about it and I don't quite know what to think.

Also, some questions now that Cassie's lore raises them. Answers would be much appreciated:

  1. It says that when General Du Couteau was called back for the Ionian War, he took Katarina with him. Does this mean Katarina served in the Noxian invasion? I assumed this wasn't the case because her lore didn't mention it.

  2. Does General Du Couteau, Talon, or Katarina know of Cassiopeia's or her mother's involvement with the Black Rose? Do they regard the cult as an enemy?

  3. Based on the wording of the bio, I'm assuming that Cass was a pre-teen (10-12 years) when her mother was poisoned. Is this correct? Can you give us a rough estimate of how old she is in present time? How much older is Katarina than her?

  4. Why did Soreana join the Black Rose? Why did she seek Cass to do the same? Are we not supposed to know that yet?

  5. Is Soreana still and presently alive?

  6. Can you offer any new info on Marcus Du Couteau's disappearance/death?

  7. What "power" was Cass exactly gifted by? Is it similar to Ascension? Something lesser? Something darker?

  8. Why did House Du Couteau, besides Soreana and Cassiopeia, accept Swain's rule?

  9. What did Soreana and the Black Rose want with the power she sent Cass to get?

  10. So Cassiopeia and Sivir have had more than one journey into Shurima for Black Rose purposes? Is this correct?

  11. Does any of Cassiopeia's family know of her transformation? Do they think she's missing, or dead? If they know, what do they think of her now?

  12. So Cass and Soreana seem to have a good relationship with each other, but what of her relationship to Katarina? To her father? What about Soreana's relationship with those two? Do either of them know Talon?

  13. Is her current short story canon anymore?

  14. What is she planning on doing next, exactly? Is she going back to Noxus? Staying in Shurima? Trying to contact the Black Rose somehow? Doing something on her own?

  15. Will Talon ever get a lore update anytime soon? Please. Don't forget about him.

Thank you, and that's all my thoughts. Feel free to share your own.

to me they nerfed Kat in her lore and this new cassiopeia lore makes me think they dont ccare about the their family and only used cassio to deepen the black rose lore and I'm so mad about it. I though they would give them lore when they reworked both kat and talon now I wouldn't be surprised if talon was nerfed to just a random assassin that just likes to kill stuf for money period.

I hope they deepen their lore please riot dont be mean

I always built my future lore predictions upon Cass and Soreana being with Du Couteau and plotting but I was not expecting them to live in Shurima all the time. It disconnects them too much and I wonder how much did they two part of family saw each other to be honest. Now, to answer your questions.

1- Katarina would be extremely young at the time of the Ionia invasion. A bit too young. She is not that old than Cassiopeia and Cass was a child I think around age 5 when they left for war. So Katarina was at most... 8 15 I think.

2- Cassiopeia's bio ends too quickly but I believe they are not exposed yet. That means General Du Couteau didn't see Cassiopeia for at least 5 years... Because he'd sense something was wrong. Her child being a snake and all that. Or it can be connected with his disappearance.

3- As I said, I believe she was around 5 9-12. Katarina should be 8 12-15.

4- It is a cult, you don't really need to have reasons to join. Her ideals and goals fitted the rose in the past and she seeks to aid with raising her daughter to the cause.

5- Seems so.

6- That whole plot is connected to Talon and we'll probably learn those stuff when he gets his update.

7- Something ancient and dark yes. It's taking over her slowly. Turning her into something else.

8- Since General Du Couteau is the head of the house, it is up to him to do the decision. And Soreana takes it as a betrayal, so either General was with Rose, or she says that just because of he turned on Darkwill with Swain.

9- Black Rose tries to collect artifacts all around. Ionia invasion, the Shadow Isles stuff with Elise etc. It's the same thing with Cassiopeia.

10- They are living in Shurima, Urzeris since the time Soreana got poisoned.

11- That's tricky. Since Azir and Xerath broke out 5 years ago... General must have noticed. That's probably what leads to his disappearance.

12- They were seperated since their childhood so I don't think there is much love or connection between Cassiopeia and Katarina. And even then, Katarina's childhood was just non-stop assassin training. What I wonder is General's and Soreana's relationship.

13- It requires editing. The point of story is still there. She doesn't have to use other people to do what she wants to do because she has power and the fact she's losing herself. Only has to change the setting to Shurima.

14- No idea on what happened the 5 years in between.

15- I'm sure they didn't. He'll get something soon hopefully. Day 2837 today.

The Du Couteau family was a popular thing to theorize back in the old days, but recent lore changes have caused them to be altered heavily. Katarina was first for sure when her new lore painted her father as awful and even trying to kill her for failing her assassination assignment. Then he died and I HEAVILY believe that Katarina became "The Faceless" of the Trifarix.

So now Katarina perhaps is allied with Swain, not as close to her father anymore, we don't know anything about how she, Cassi, and Talon interacted with one another. So....yeah, I think the Du Couteau family has gone through a lot of revisions that don't make a lot of sense. Perhaps Talon's eventual lore update will shed some light on how the whole family dynamic worked.

Can you link me anything on Cass and Kat's relationship?

I also thought that Talon and Kat seemed to have formed a very strong bond to one another, but I don't remember reading anything about the Du Couteau sisters' relationship, except that after Cass became a lamia(?) she became very self conscious and sequestered herself from the outside world for a time.

###Number 8 seems INCREDIBLY weird to me. As the Journal of Justice was finishing off, weren't Talon and Kat together, observing a ceremony for Swain's ascension to power with great suspicion as they were about to go off and continue searching for any traces of their beloved father/mentor? I know that Riot wants to totally rewrite a lot of things, but I thought character relationships were a bit more stable.

Yeah I did have that feeling reading Cass's new lore. Originally I always interpreted the DuCouteau's being close, or at least caring somewhat, as you said. Even though Cass may not have the same methods as her sister, she still cared about her family. Now its like this huge divide. And I feel like the only reason Cass's lore was changed in this way was to expand upon the Black Rose. Which I don't think is inherently bad but it would have been more interesting and more true to the history of the character if Cassiopeia had some feelings about her mother's involvement; maybe she was close to her mother, but cares deeply about her father too and is hesitant about going behind his back about certain things. This could have created an interesting character conflict, both internal and external.

I don't see where you see Katarina rebelling against her father. Her bio has pretty much everything she's doing as a means to redeem her failures in her father's eyes and prove herself as a Noxian and as his daughter. I'm not getting hate or spite at all. She's shamed, and desperately wants to get back into her father's good graces.

And actually, I like Cassiopeia's new lore. It placed her in the Black Rose (which I believed was much needed), and gave her more purpose in the Noxian saga.

To answer some of your points:

  1. Just because she was brought to Noxus with her father doesn't mean she served in the war. There was likely very little need for stealth and assassins in a full frontal conquest of a peaceful island region.

  2. Obviously not, or else the General wouldn't have blindly backed Swain's conquest. The Black Rose is a secret cabal, so I wouldn't imagine that it's members go blindly broadcasting who they are to everyone, especially family members who are serving in the military.

  3. Pass

  4. Why does anyone join a secret society? I don't think we need explanations for why Soraena was a member of the Black Rose. As to why she asked her daughter to join, they were really close, and Cassiopeia was as gifted as her mother in politics and social endeavors. It's a pretty big no brainer as to why her mother would ask her beloved daughter to join her.

  5. As far as we know, yes.

  6. Pass.

  7. Cassipeia was cursed by the trap in the tomb. It's corrupting her body. It doesn't necessarily have to be related to ascension or anything like that. This really doesn't need explaining, it's just an ancient trap to stop trespassers.

  8. Because General Du Coteau was a general, and probably served with Swain, maybe he liked him, maybe he had a bro-crush on Swain. Honestly, we don't need an in-depth analysis of this. It's not that relevant to the affairs of the lore.

  9. The Black Rose collects artifacts of great power. We know this from Elise's lore. We don't know what the secret society wants to do with them, so we really don't need an explanation as to why Soraena was tasked with retrieving this relic.

  10. No? At no point does it mention that Cassiopeia used Sivir's services more than once. She even tried to kill Sivir on the spot once she found what she needed.

  11. Cassiopeia's mother probably knows, as they are close, and also because the Black Rose tends to accept and use the capabilities of those with magical powers, even if they're not suitable for social interaction in society. I wouldn't imagine that Katarina or the General knows, considering they reside in Noxus now. Soraena could really easily cover for Cassiopeia through correspondence.

  12. Soraena probably loves both of her daughters, but obviously prefers Cassiopeia since they're close. That happens with parents with multiple kids. And she felt clearly betrayed by her husband's backing of Swain, so things are probably a little tense there (though the General wouldn't know why, since he's unaware of his wife's involvement in the Black Rose). Cass probably has a cordial relationship with her father and sister. I doubt either of them know Talon per se, as he was likely picked up by the General in Noxus, though they're probably aware of his existence.

  13. It can be, if the setting is adjusted to place it in their Shuriman home, instead of Noxus.

  14. Cassiopeia doesn't need to contact the Black Rose. She already has contact through her mother. I would imagine she would intend to be an operative for the Rose, and take missives from them when they need her unique skills.

  15. One can hope.

Talon will be an obstacle for Soreana. She needs him controlled or removed.summoner 11

It gives me tears of happiness knowing people in this community remember Talon and his outdated af lore still exists.
